The Bella Pro Series Steam Espresso Maker is a compact appliance that uses steam pressure to brew espresso and froth milk for cappuccinos. It features a water tank with a safety lid, a brew head, a filter basket, and a steam wand with a "Perfect Froth" tip. The function knob allows users to select between brewing espresso and generating steam for frothing. A blue POWER light indicates when the unit is operating. The device is designed for ease of use, allowing for the preparation of multiple cups of espresso or cappuccino.
To begin, users must ensure the function knob is in the OFF position and the unit is plugged into a 120V AC electrical outlet. The water tank safety lid is removed by turning it counter-clockwise, and cold water is poured into the water tank, using the glass carafe markings for reference (2 to 4 cups for espresso, or 4 cups of water plus 1 steam level for cappuccino). The safety lid is then securely fastened by turning it clockwise.
For brewing espresso, the filter basket holder is removed from the brew head by grasping the handle and turning it clockwise to the unlocked position. Ground espresso coffee (medium to fine grind is recommended for best results) is measured with the provided spoon and placed into the filter basket up to the "4" level mark, then gently tamped. The filter basket is then placed into the filter basket holder, and the holder is aligned with the slots in the brew head. The handle is turned counter-clockwise (to the right) until the filter basket holder is securely locked. The glass carafe, with its lid on and the hole in the lid aligned under the nozzle, is placed on the drip tray cover.
The function knob is then turned to the espresso position (SSS), and the blue POWER light illuminates. Espresso will begin to flow into the carafe after approximately 2 minutes for 4 cups of espresso, or 3 minutes for 4 cups of cappuccino. Once the desired amount of coffee has brewed, the function knob is turned to OFF, and the POWER light will turn off. It is crucial to allow the unit to cool and ensure the water tank is empty before refilling for additional servings.
For preparing cappuccino, the process begins with brewing espresso as described above. While the espresso is brewing, a deep, metal or ceramic pitcher is filled halfway with fresh, cold skim milk and placed near the Espresso Maker. After the espresso has brewed to the 4-cup mark, the function knob is turned to OFF. The pitcher is then held under the steam jet, and the "Perfect Froth" tip is inserted just under the surface of the milk. The function knob is gradually turned to the steam position (SSS), and the pitcher is moved in a slight circular motion to froth the milk. It is important to keep the tip just under the surface to avoid splattering. Once frothing is complete, the function knob is returned to OFF, and the pitcher is removed. To clean the steam wand and release any residual steam, the function knob should be turned to the steam position until no further steam is emitted, then turned back to OFF. Finally, a cappuccino cup is filled 1/3 with espresso, an equal amount of warm milk is added, and frothed milk is spooned on top. Optional cocoa powder, nutmeg, or cinnamon can be added for flavor.
The Bella Pro Series Steam Espresso Maker requires regular cleaning and occasional descaling to maintain its performance. Before any cleaning or maintenance, the unit must be unplugged and allowed to cool completely. The filter basket holder and filter basket should be emptied and rinsed thoroughly with warm water after every use. To remove the filter basket holder, grasp the handle firmly and turn it clockwise to the unlocked position, allowing it to drop out. The used coffee grounds are then removed, and the filter basket can be cleaned with a kitchen brush. Clogged holes in the filter basket or steam wand can be cleared with a pin.
The drip plate should be removed, the water from the drip tray emptied, and both parts wiped dry and replaced. The exterior of the Espresso Maker and the steam wand can be wiped with a damp cloth; solvents or abrasive detergents should not be used as they can damage the surface. The glass carafe and its lid should be cleaned with warm, soapy water, handling with care when wet.
Descaling is recommended approximately every 6 months, depending on water hardness and frequency of use, to remove mineral and calcium buildup. To descale, ensure the unit is unplugged and cool. A solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts cold water is prepared in the carafe and poured into the water reservoir. The water tank safety lid is securely fastened, and an empty coffee filter basket and holder are attached. The carafe is placed on the drip plate. The unit is then plugged in, and the function knob is turned to the espresso position (SSS). The hot vinegar solution will flow through the coffee basket into the carafe. During this process, the steam jet should be placed into a tall glass or mug, and the function knob briefly moved to the steam position (SSS) to clean any residue in the steam tube. The knob is then returned to the espresso position to continue the descaling process. Once the flow stops, the function knob is turned to OFF, and the unit is allowed to cool. The filter basket holder and carafe are removed and rinsed with hot water. This rinsing process should be repeated twice with cold water to remove any residual vinegar. Finally, the Espresso Maker is unplugged from the wall outlet.
For storage, the unit must be unplugged and fully cooled. It should not be stored while hot or plugged in. Care should be taken not to stress the power cord where it enters the unit to prevent fraying or breakage. The Espresso Maker should be stored in its box in a clean, dry area.
