This selection only establishes the POWER UP STATE of the tilt sense function. If ENABLED the unit
will power up with the tilt indicator functioning. Regardless of this menu selection, the tilt function can be
enabled or disabled via an acoustic command (if selected), see section 7.1.

8.0 MAINTENANCE
8.1 Step-by-Step Turnaround Procedure for the 865-A
One big advantage of the Benthos 865-A Acoustic Release is its simple, low maintenance design which
allows for very quick shipboard turnarounds. The following turnaround procedure and checklist are
provided for ease of maintenance at sea.

Bristle brush Battery Pack: 865-SB-13
Screwdriver
3/8" ignition wrench or small
adjustable wrench
Voltmeter, ohmmeter Anode Kit: 865-SA-K
3/4" open end wrench Silicone grease
3/4" socket wrench Benthos Deck Unit: DS-7000
Scotch brite or wire brush Benthos Expendable Link: 865-SL
STEP 1: RECOVERY
Promptly scrub the unit down with fresh water and bristle brushes. Clean all scum off of the transducer.
Remove and discard all old anodes, but save the mounting hardware.
STEP 2: REPLACE BATTERY PACK.
a. Move unit to a clean, dry workbench. Turn the release off by turning switch to HOLD-EXTEND.
Open housing and slowly slide chassis assembly out, being careful not to scratch the O-ring
surfaces. Unplug the battery pack connector. Remove the battery/electronics package by
removing two nuts on opposite side of release mechanism mounting plate and pulling straight out
(see Figure 8-1).
