Model 865-A Deep Sea Acoustic Release/Transponder M-855-009
Benthos, Inc.
34
This shaft is sealed with two No. 010 O-rings. It is advisable to replace these seals after every two
years of operation.
a. Use a 1/16-inch punch to drive the 1/16 x 1/4-inch roll pin out of the switch cam.
b. Remove the cam from the shaft. The shaft will now easily push outward from the end cap.
c. Replace both O-rings, as described in Section 7.7.1, except use a moving parts grease such as
"Versilube".
d. Clean the shaft hole using alcohol and a cotton swab.
e. Refit the switch shaft into the hole and mount the cam, making sure that it points in the same
direction as the arrow. Refit the roll pin.
8.4.3 Release Pin Seals
This shaft is sealed with two No. 012 O-rings. It is advisable to replace these seals after every two
years of operation.
a. Set the end cap rotary switch to the TEST-RETRACT position.
b. Open the housing and unplug the battery pack connector.
c. Remove the battery/electronics chassis from the end cap assembly.
d. Remove the 1.5 amp Slo-blo motor fuse.
e. Remove the microswitches from the end cap complete with the wires, by removing the six switch-
mounting screws. After noting the location of each switch and the hardware associated with it,
store carefully.
f. To remove the end cap from the release pin, cut the safety wire attached to the four end cap
mounting bolts, and remove the bolts using an 1/2-inch wrench while supporting the end cap.
g. Carefully remove the end cap from the release pin leaving the spacers on the bolts in order to
prevent the release pin ball nut assembly from turning. Note the ball nut orientation.
Once the end cap is off, tape the ball nut assembly in place so that it will not accidentally spin off.
CAUTION: It is VERY IMPORTANT that the ball nut assembly does not come off the
threaded shaft as it has an assembly of loose internal ball bearings.
