NOTE: Benthos offers several levels of standard refurbishment at reasonable prices. Contact the factory
for further details.
The end cap to housing seals comprise two large O-rings, No. 240 and No. 243. Every time the housing
is opened, the following procedure should be adopted before reassembly.
a. Wipe each O-ring and O-ring groove with a soft cloth to remove the dirt, old grease, etc.
b. Carefully inspect each O-ring for signs of physical damage, holes, nicks, extrusions, etc.
If the rings show no damage, then apply a thin film of silicone grease and reassemble.
If the rings show damage, then follow the replacement procedure below.
c. Avoid opening the housing on an open deck where salt, water, etc. can be blown onto the release
motor mechanism. If this happens, use a soft brush and air line to clean the mechanism. A solvent
is not recommended as it may wash the lubricant from the thrust bearings.
d. A fine coating of oil applied to the exposed metal surfaces will assist in corrosion prevention, but be
careful not to get grease on the transducer or anode.
8.4 Replacing the Sealing Rings
8.4.1 End Cap to Housing Seals
a. Remove the old O-ring by levering it gently out of its groove. Clean the groove with a soft cloth or
cotton swab dampened with alcohol.
CAUTION: Be very careful not to damage the O-ring grooves. Use a pliable
material with dulled edges and corners to act as a lever.
b. Inspect the new O-ring for damage. Coat it with a thin film of high quality silicone grease.
c. Press the new O-ring into the groove and ensure that it seats evenly.
