Overview

The Biamp Cambridge Qt® X Controller Accessories Installation Guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing various accessories designed to enhance the functionality and deployment options of the Qt® X 300, 600, 800, and 805 models. These accessories facilitate different mounting configurations and power solutions, ensuring the controllers can be integrated into diverse environments, from standard equipment racks to plenum spaces.

Qt® X Controller Accessories Overview:

The manual details several key accessories, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Rack Mount Kit (Qt X RMT-KT): This kit is designed to mount Qt X 300, 600, or 800 controllers into a standard equipment rack. It includes the necessary rack mount brackets and hardware. The installation process involves converting from a wall mount (for Qt X 300/600) or directly installing into a rack (for Qt X 800).
  • Wall Mount Kit (Qt X WMT-KT): This kit allows Qt X 800 or 805 controllers to be mounted securely to a wall. It comprises the wall bracket and associated hardware. The instructions cover converting a rack-mounted Qt X 805 to a wall-mounted configuration.
  • Plenum Mount Kit (Qt X PLMT-KT): This kit enables Qt X 300/600 or 805 controllers to be installed in a plenum space, typically on ceiling tile rails. It includes specialized mounting brackets and provides guidance for converting from rack or wall mount configurations.
  • 48V Power Supply Kit (Qt X PWR-KT-48V): This kit provides a dedicated 48V power supply, power cord, bracket, and hardware specifically for Qt X 800/805 models. It ensures reliable power delivery for these controllers.
  • PoE+ Class 4 Power Injector (POE29U-1AT(PL)D-R [91x.0004]): This plenum-rated power injector supplies power to Qt X 800/800D models. It is essential for installations where Power over Ethernet (PoE+) is the preferred power method.

Installation Procedures and Usage Features:

The manual provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for each accessory, often accompanied by clear diagrams (Figures 1-14) to illustrate the process.

Rack Mount Bracket Installation:

For Qt X 300/600 controllers, the process begins with removing any existing wall bracket and reserving M4 screws. For Qt X 800 controllers being converted from wall mount with a 48V power supply, both the wall mount kit and power supply kit are required, and the process starts at Step 3.

  1. Remove existing wall bracket: If present, the wall bracket is removed, and M4 screws are reserved for attaching rack mount brackets (Figure 1).
  2. Disconnect power supply bracket: The power supply supporting bracket is disconnected from the wall mount bracket (Figure 2).
  3. Attach power supply bracket to rack ear: The power supply bracket is attached to the longer (R) rack ear using hex nuts. The power supply, with its cord outlet facing the back, is then inserted (Figure 3).
  4. Attach rack ears to controller: The rack ears are attached to the Qt X controller using the M4 screws previously removed. The longer bracket with the power supply is mounted to the right side, ensuring the R/L markings on the brackets match the controller sides (Figure 4).
  5. Secure controller to rack: The assembled Qt X controller is then secured to the equipment rack via the rack ears (Figure 5). Rack mounting hardware is not included. A crucial tip is to make all back panel connections before securing the controller to the rack, as it will not rotate forward for access once mounted. Cable ties are recommended for neat cable management.

Wall Mount Bracket Installation:

For Qt X 805 controllers, the process starts with removing existing rack mount brackets. For Qt X 800 controllers being converted to wall mount with a 48V power supply, both the wall mount kit and power supply kit are needed, starting at Step 3.

  1. Remove existing rack mount brackets: If present, rack mount brackets are removed, and M4 screws are reserved for attaching the wall mount bracket (Figure 6).
  2. Disconnect power supply bracket: The power supply supporting bracket is disconnected from the longer (R) rack mount bracket, and hex nuts are reserved (Figure 7).
  3. Attach power supply bracket to wall mount bracket: The power supply bracket is loosely attached to the wall mount bracket using hex nuts on threaded studs. The power supply is inserted with the power cord outlet aligned with the side hole, and hardware is tightened (Figures 8a & 8b).
  4. Mark and drill mounting holes: The wall bracket is placed on the wall to mark hole locations. For drywall/sheet rock, 1/4" drill bits are used, and plastic mounting anchors are inserted.
    • Important: The manual stresses not to connect the wall mount bracket to the control unit until after drilling, to prevent dust and debris from entering the Qt X connectors.
  5. Attach controller to wall bracket: The controller is attached to the wall bracket by aligning lower holes with angled slots. Lower screws are installed loosely, and upper screws are loosely installed without capturing the upper slots, allowing the control module to rotate forward for cable installation (Figure 9).
  6. Install screws into anchors: Screws are installed into plastic anchors, leaving enough room for the bracket to hang on the screw heads (Figure 10). The bracket is placed so screw heads fit into keyholes, then moved down to capture screws. Screws are tightened to secure the bracket.
    • Note: Keeping the controller rotated down simplifies tightening mounting screws.
  7. Connect wiring and secure: All wiring is connected as per the Qt X Installation & Operation Guide. The Qt X is then rotated up and moved down into the operating position to lock in place. Side screws are tightened to secure it (Figure 11). Cable ties are again recommended for cable management.

Plenum Bracket Installation:

This kit includes a pair of mounting brackets and M4 screws. The brackets can be configured in three orientations to fit over a ceiling rail (Figures 12-14).

  1. Remove existing brackets: Any other brackets are removed from the controller, and M4 screws are reserved for plenum bracket attachment.
  2. Secure brackets: Each bracket is secured with a screw threaded into the appropriate hole, as noted in the bracket drawing. Both brackets must be installed in the same configuration and tightened to prevent controller movement.
  3. Safety cable: A safety cable can be threaded through any open holes for additional security.
    • Important Notes:
      • If the panel is installed face down, an additional M4 screw must be installed in the lower holes on each side to prevent panel movement.
      • All wiring must be plenum rated if installed in a plenum space.
      • The installer is responsible for sourcing and installing the proper safety cable to meet local building codes.

48V Power Supply Kit:

This kit provides power to Qt X 800/805 models. The power supply bracket is installed on either the wall mount bracket or the longer (R) rack mount bracket as previously described. The unit's cord plugs into the circled port on the rear of the controller, and the power cord plugs into the power supply. The controller should not be powered until suggested in the installation instructions.

PoE+ Class 4 Power Injector:

This plenum-rated injector powers Qt X 800/800D models. It can be mounted using tabs on either end, with mounting hardware supplied by the installer. A rated cable connects the injector's OUT port to the PoE+ port on the rear of the controller (circled). As with the 48V power supply, the controller should not be powered until suggested in the installation instructions.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual primarily focuses on installation, several tips contribute to long-term maintenance and reliability:

  • Cable Management: The recurring "TIP: Use cable ties to constrain extra cable lengths for a neat appearance and to reduce tangles" emphasizes the importance of organized wiring, which can prevent accidental disconnections, improve airflow, and simplify future troubleshooting or maintenance.
  • Preventing Debris: The warning during wall mount installation to avoid connecting the bracket to the control unit until after drilling prevents dust and debris from entering sensitive connectors and ports, safeguarding the device's internal components.
  • Proper Power-Up Sequence: The instruction not to power the controller until suggested in the installation guide ensures that all connections are correctly made and secured before applying power, preventing potential damage from incorrect wiring.

Technical Specifications (Implicit):

  • Screw Sizes: M4 screws and hex nuts are consistently used for attaching brackets and components.
  • Power Requirements: 48V for the power supply kit, PoE+ Class 4 for the power injector.
  • Plenum Rating: The PoE+ injector and plenum mount kit are plenum-rated, indicating compliance with fire safety standards for air-handling spaces.
  • Drill Bit Size: 1/4" drill bit for drywall/sheet rock mounting anchors.

The manual concludes with contact information for Biamp support, web resources, warranty details, and safety/compliance information, reinforcing the company's commitment to user support and product standards. It also includes a note about the manual's accuracy and the availability of the latest version online, highlighting Biamp's continuous improvement process.
