Overview

This document describes the BLACK+DECKER BEHS03 SDS Impact drill, a power tool designed for drilling in wood, metal, plastics, and masonry, intended for consumer use.

Function Description

The BEHS03 SDS Impact drill is a versatile tool capable of performing various drilling and chiseling operations. It features an On/Off switch (1) for activation and deactivation, a speed selector dial (2) to adjust the rotational speed, and an operating mode selector (3) to switch between different functions. The tool holder (4) is designed for quick accessory changes, and a side handle (5) with a depth stop (6) provides enhanced control and precision during use.

The operating mode selector (3) allows users to choose between:

  • Impact drilling (position 3a): For drilling in masonry and concrete.
  • Rotary drilling (position 3a): For drilling in steel, wood, and plastics.
  • Chiseling (position 3a): For chiseling tasks.

The tool is equipped with a quick-release chuck for easy exchange of bits. For impact drilling, the accessory must be able to move axially several centimeters when locked in the tool holder. A keyed chuck (9) can also be fitted for use with standard drill bits, but it is explicitly warned against using keyed chucks in hammer drilling mode.

Important Technical Specifications

The BEHS03 SDS Impact drill operates on an input voltage of 230 VAC and has a power input of 1250 W. Its no-load speed ranges from 0 to 900 RPM.

Maximum drilling capacity:

  • Concrete: 32 mm
  • Steel: 13 mm
  • Wood: 40 mm

The tool weighs 5 kg.

Noise emission values (in accordance with ISO 4871):

  • Measured A-weighted sound power level (LWA): 101.5 dB(A) with an uncertainty (KWA) of 3 dB(A).
  • Measured A-weighted emission sound pressure level at the work station (LPA): 90.5 dB(A) with an uncertainty (Kp) of 3 dB(A).

Vibration total values (triax vector sum) determined according to EN 60745:

  • Hammer drilling into concrete: Vibration emission value (ah) of 14.5 m/s² with an uncertainty (K) of 1.5 m/s².
  • Chiseling: Vibration emission value (ah) of 15.7 m/s² with an uncertainty (K) of 1.5 m/s².

The tool is double insulated, meaning no earth wire is required.

Usage Features

Assembly and Adjustment:

  • Side handle (5): The side handle can be slid onto the front of the tool and rotated to the desired position before being tightened by turning the grip clockwise. This allows for personalized positioning.
  • Depth stop (6): The depth stop is inserted into the mounting hole (5a) after slackening the knob (5b). It can be set to control the maximum drilling depth, which is the distance between the drill bit tip and the front end of the depth stop. The knob (5b) is then tightened to secure it.
  • Accessory fitting (quick release chuck): To fit an accessory (8), pull back the sleeve (4a), insert the accessory into the tool holder (4), push it down, and turn it slightly until it fits into the slots. A pull test confirms proper locking. To remove, pull back the sleeve (4a) and pull out the accessory.
  • Keyed chuck fitting (9): The shank of the supplied keyed chuck is fitted into the tool holder as described for other accessories.
  • Accessories in keyed chuck (11): Open the chuck by turning the sleeve (10), insert the accessory (11), and then use the chuck key (12) in each hole of the chuck (13) to tighten it.

Operation:

  • Switching on/off: Press the On/Off switch (1) to turn the tool on. Release it to turn the tool off.
  • Speed control: The variable speed control knob (2) allows selection of the required speed range. Lower speeds are recommended for large diameter drill bits, while higher speeds are suitable for smaller diameter bits.
  • Drilling technique: Users are advised to let the tool work at its own pace and avoid overloading. Before drilling into walls, floors, or ceilings, it is crucial to check for the location of wiring and pipes.
  • Long drill bits: When using long drill bits, never operate at higher speed than the bit's maximum speed rating. Always start drilling at low speed with the bit tip in contact with the workpiece. Apply pressure only in direct line with the bit and avoid excessive pressure to prevent bending and injury.
  • Chisel accessories: Never use a chisel accessory in rotary mode, as it can bind and rotate the drill.
  • Workpiece security: Always use clamps or other practical methods to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform.
  • Safety precautions: Wear ear protectors when impact drilling. Use auxiliary handles supplied with the tool. Brace the tool properly before use due to high output torque. Hold the tool by insulated gripping surfaces when cutting accessories may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.

Maintenance Features

The BLACK+DECKER BEHS03 is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance, relying on proper tool care and regular cleaning.

General Maintenance:

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the ventilation slots using a soft brush or dry cloth. The motor housing should be cleaned with a damp cloth; abrasive or solvent-based cleaners should not be used.
  • Chuck cleaning: Regularly open the chuck and tap it to remove any dust from the interior (when fitted).
  • Pre-maintenance steps: Before performing any maintenance, ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged. If it has a separate battery pack, switch it off and remove the battery. If the battery is integral, run it down completely and then switch off.

Mains Plug Replacement (U.K. & Ireland only):

  • If a new mains plug is needed, safely dispose of the old plug.
  • Connect the brown lead to the live terminal and the blue lead to the neutral terminal in the new plug.
  • No connection should be made to the earth terminal as the tool is double insulated.
  • A 5 A fuse is recommended.

Service:

  • Any repairs should be performed by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts to ensure the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Warranty:

  • Black & Decker offers a 24-month guarantee from the date of purchase, valid within the Member States of the European Union and the European Free Trade Area. To claim, proof of purchase is required, and the claim must be in accordance with Black & Decker Terms and Conditions.
