Overview

This document describes the BLACK+DECKER BEH850 Impact drill, a versatile power tool designed for drilling in wood, metal, plastics, and masonry, as well as for screwdriving purposes. It is intended for consumer use.

Function Description

The BEH850 Impact drill is a corded power tool that operates by rotating a drill bit, which can also incorporate an impact mechanism for drilling into harder materials like masonry. The tool features a variable speed switch (1) that allows the user to control the rotational speed by varying the pressure applied to the switch. For continuous operation, a lock-on button (2) is available, which keeps the tool running without constant pressure on the switch. However, this continuous operation feature does not work in reverse rotation.

The drill is equipped with a forward/reverse switch (3) to select the direction of rotation. Forward (clockwise) rotation is used for drilling and tightening screws, while reverse (counterclockwise) rotation is used for loosening screws or removing jammed drill bits. It is crucial not to change the direction of rotation while the motor is running to prevent damage to the tool.

A drilling mode selector (4) allows the user to switch between different operating modes. For impact drilling in masonry and concrete, the selector should be set to the "T" position. For drilling in steel, wood, and plastics, or for screwdriving, the selector should be set to the "a" position.

The tool uses a twin sleeve chuck (5) to hold drill bits and other accessories. The chuck is opened by turning the sleeve counterclockwise and tightened by turning it clockwise. An auxiliary side handle (6) is provided for better control and stability during operation. This handle can be adjusted and secured in various positions to suit the user's preference and the task at hand. A depth gauge hole (7) is integrated into the side handle assembly, allowing for the insertion of a depth gauge (not supplied) to set a precise drilling depth.

Usage Features

Before any assembly or adjustment, ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged.

To fit the side handle and depth stop:

  1. Turn the grip counterclockwise to slide the side handle (6) onto the front of the tool.
  2. Rotate the side handle to the desired position, ensuring that the notches (6a) engage with the corresponding notches on the tool (5a). To adjust or release, slide the handle forward and then re-engage.
  3. Insert the depth gauge (not supplied) into the mounting hole (7).
  4. Set the desired drilling depth: slacken the side handle, adjust the depth gauge so that the distance between the drill bit tip and the front end of the gauge matches the maximum desired drilling depth, then tighten the side handle.
  5. Tighten the side handle by turning the grip clockwise.

To fit an accessory (drill bit):

  1. Open the chuck by turning the sleeve (5) counterclockwise.
  2. Insert the bit shaft (8) into the chuck.
  3. Tighten the chuck by turning the sleeve clockwise.

When operating the tool, always allow it to work at its own pace and avoid overloading it. Before drilling into walls, floors, or ceilings, always check for the location of wiring and pipes to prevent hazards.

To switch the tool on, press the variable speed switch (1). The speed is proportional to how far the switch is pressed. For continuous operation, press the lock-on button (2) and then release the variable speed switch. To switch off, release the variable speed switch. If in continuous operation, press and release the variable speed switch once more.

For drilling and tightening screws, select forward rotation by pushing the forward/reverse slider (3) to the left. For loosening screws or removing a jammed drill bit, select reverse rotation by pushing the slider to the right. Remember not to change the direction of rotation while the motor is running.

For impact drilling in masonry and concrete, set the drilling mode selector (4) to the "T" position. For drilling in steel, wood, and plastics or for screwdriving, set the operating mode selector (4) to the "a" position.

The performance of the tool is significantly influenced by the quality of the accessories used. BLACK+DECKER accessories are designed to enhance tool performance and ensure optimal results.

Maintenance Features

The BLACK+DECKER BEH850 is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning and proper tool care are essential for continuous satisfactory operation.

Before performing any maintenance on the tool, always ensure it is switched off and unplugged from the power source.

Regularly clean the ventilation slots in the tool using a soft brush or dry cloth to prevent dust buildup. Clean the motor housing with a damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive or solvent-based cleaners, as these can damage the tool's finish. If fitted, regularly open the chuck and tap it to remove any dust from the interior.

If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or an authorized BLACK+DECKER Service Centre to avoid any hazards. For UK and Ireland users, if a new mains plug needs to be fitted, dispose of the old plug safely. Connect the brown lead to the live terminal and the blue lead to the neutral terminal in the new plug. Crucially, no connection should be made to the earth terminal. Follow the fitting instructions provided with good quality plugs, and use a recommended fuse of 5 A.

For environmental protection, products and batteries marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol should not be disposed of with normal household waste. These materials can be recovered and recycled, reducing the demand for raw materials. Electrical products and batteries should be recycled according to local provisions. Further information on recycling is available at www.2helpU.com.
