Overview

The BLACK+DECKER Personal Ceramic Heater, available under catalog numbers BHDC500W46 and BHDC500B46, is a compact and portable heating appliance designed for household use. This instruction manual provides comprehensive guidance on its safe operation, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to provide personal heating using ceramic heating elements. It features adjustable fan and heat settings, allowing users to select between fan-only operation, low heat, or high heat (1500 watts). An adjustable thermostat enables precise temperature control, ensuring the desired warmth is maintained. The heater is equipped with important safety features, including an overheat safety mechanism that automatically shuts off the unit if internal components reach a certain temperature, and a tip-over safety feature that deactivates the heater if it is accidentally knocked over. A power-on indicator light provides visual confirmation when the unit is operating.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 120V, 60Hz
  • Power Consumption: 1500W
  • Unit Size (WxDxH): 7.5" x 5.7" x 9.2"
  • Plug Type: Polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) for reduced risk of electric shock.
  • Safety Features: Overheat safety feature, Tip-over safety feature.

Usage Features:

To operate the heater, place it on a firm, level surface and plug it directly into a 120V AC electrical outlet. It is crucial to operate the heater only in an upright position.

  1. Heat Control: Turn the fan/heat control knob clockwise from the "OFF" position to select "LOW" or "HIGH" heat settings. For fan-only operation without heat, select the "FAN" setting.
  2. Thermostat Adjustment: To adjust the desired temperature, turn the thermostat knob clockwise from "MIN" to "MAX" to increase the temperature. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, lower the thermostat setting towards "MIN" until the heater stops operating. The power indicator light illuminates when "FAN," "LOW," or "HIGH" settings are selected.
  3. Shut-off: To turn off the unit, turn the fan/heat control knob to "OFF."

Safety Precautions for Usage:

  • Always read all instructions before use.
  • The heater's surfaces can become hot during operation; avoid direct skin contact. Use handles if moving the heater.
  • Maintain a minimum distance of 3 feet (0.9m) between the heater's front and combustible materials (furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, curtains). Keep materials away from the sides and rear as well.
  • Exercise extreme caution when the heater is used near children or invalids, or when left unattended.
  • Unplug the heater when not in use.
  • Do not operate the heater with a damaged cord or plug, or if it has malfunctioned, been dropped, or damaged. Discard or return the heater to an authorized service facility for repair.
  • Do not use outdoors.
  • This heater is not suitable for use in bathrooms, laundry areas, or similar indoor locations where it could fall into water.
  • Avoid running the power cord under carpeting, throw rugs, runners, or furniture/appliances. Route the cord away from traffic areas to prevent tripping.
  • To disconnect, turn controls to "OFF" first, then remove the plug from the outlet.
  • Do not insert foreign objects into ventilation or exhaust openings to prevent electric shock, fire, or damage.
  • Do not block air intakes or exhaust openings to prevent fire; avoid using on soft surfaces like a bed.
  • Do not use in areas where gasoline, paint, or flammable liquids are stored.
  • The heater draws 12.5 amps; avoid plugging it into a circuit already powering other appliances to prevent overloading.
  • The heater's output temperature can be intense; use is not recommended for individuals with reduced heat sensitivity.
  • Never leave the heater unattended.
  • Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet/receptacle. Do not use with an extension cord or relocatable power tap (outlet/power strip).
  • If the power cord feels warm, it's normal. However, a loose fit between the outlet and plug can cause overheating of the plug. If this occurs, try a different outlet and contact a qualified electrician to inspect the original outlet for damage.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of the heater.

  1. Power Off: Always turn off the power before cleaning.
  2. Unplug and Cool: Unplug the unit from the electrical outlet and allow it to cool completely.
  3. Cleaning the Outer Shell: The outer shell can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. A mild detergent may be used if necessary. After cleaning, dry the unit thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  4. Avoid Liquid Entry: CAUTION: Do not allow liquid to enter the heater.
  5. Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use alcohol, gasoline, abrasive powders, furniture polish, or rough brushes, as these can damage or deteriorate the heater's surface.
  6. No Immersion: Do not immerse the heater in water.
  7. Drying: Ensure the unit is completely dry before use.

Storage:

When not in use, store the heater in a cool, dry location. To prevent dust and dirt buildup, it is recommended to repack the unit in its original packaging.

Troubleshooting:

If the heater/fan fails to operate:

  • Check Plug: Ensure the heater/fan is securely plugged in. If not, unplug, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in securely.
  • Check Circuit: Verify for a blown circuit fuse or a tripped main circuit breaker. If they appear fine, test the outlet with another appliance.
  • Check Power Switch: Confirm that electricity is reaching the main power switch at the back of the unit.
  • Upright Position: Ensure the heater is in an upright position.
  • Thermostat Setting: For proper heating, the desired temperature on the heater must be set a few degrees higher than the room temperature. If the unit isn't heating properly, increase the desired temperature to fully engage the heating elements. If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact a qualified technician. Do not attempt to adjust or repair the heater/fan yourself.
