Overview

This document describes the Black Ridge 2HP Air Compressor, model number BR1000 (PLU: 590730), an electric direct drive air compressor designed for light-duty air tools.

Function Description:

The Black Ridge 2HP Air Compressor is a portable electric air compressor designed to provide compressed air for various light-duty air tools. It features a direct drive motor, a 21-litre tank, and includes a Nitto-style fitting for easy connection of air tools. The compressor is intended for intermittent operation, with a recommended 75% duty cycle (45 seconds ON, 15 seconds OFF) to ensure longevity and proper lubrication. It compresses normal air and is not suitable for compressing other types of gases, or for pharmaceutical, food, sanitary, scuba, or oxygen air bottle filling purposes. The unit is designed for domestic use and is not intended for industrial or commercial applications.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model No.: BR1000
  • PLU: 590730
  • Motor: Electric 2 HP
  • Wattage: 1500 W
  • No Load Speed: 2800 RPM
  • Voltage: 240V AC - 50 HZ
  • Tank Size: 21 Litres
  • Free Air Delivery (FAD): 70 L/MIN
  • Max. Tank Pressure: 115 PSI (8 BAR)
  • Outlet Pressure: 0 PSI - 115 PSI Adjustable
  • Motor/Pump Kicks In: 85 PSI
  • Pressure Cycle Stops: 115 PSI
  • Duty Cycle: 75%
  • Oil Type: SAE30
  • Noise Rating: 80dB@5m
  • Number of Outlets: 1
  • Warranty: 12 Months

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The compressor requires some assembly before use, including attaching the rubber stopper and wheels. The air filter also needs to be screwed into the pump head. It is crucial to replace the transport plug with the oil breather before first use.
  • Oil Breather: A transport plug must be removed and replaced with the supplied oil breather before operation to prevent damage from oil leakage.
  • Oil Level Check: The oil level should always be checked before each use, ensuring it is at the top of the red dot on the sight glass. The compressor should be on flat, level ground for accurate readings. If the oil level is low, SAE30 oil should be added.
  • Power Connection: The compressor must be plugged directly into a standard 240V AC 10Amp power point. The use of extension cords is strongly discouraged as it can cause power voltage loss and motor damage, which is not covered under warranty. A longer air hose should be used if more reach is needed.
  • Starting and Stopping: The compressor is turned ON by lifting the red ON/OFF button on the pressure switch and OFF by pushing it down.
  • Running-in Procedure: Before initial use, the compressor requires a running-in period. This involves plugging it in, opening the tank drain tap, starting the compressor, and running it for approximately 1 minute with no load. This ensures proper lubrication. After 1 minute, the compressor should be stopped, allowed to cool, and the oil level rechecked. The tank drain tap must be closed before subsequent operations.
  • Positioning: The compressor should always be positioned on level ground, away from the work area to prevent it from being covered in dust, water, or paint.
  • Pressure Adjustment: The compressor automatically pumps between 85 PSI (kick-in) and 115 PSI (stops). The outlet air pressure can be adjusted using the red regulator knob, with the outlet pressure gauge indicating the current setting. Turning the knob anti-clockwise lowers the pressure, while turning it clockwise increases it. Users should always match the air pressure to the tool's recommended working pressure.
  • Air Tool Connection: The compressor is fitted with a Nitto-style female socket. To connect an air tool, slide the outer collar backwards, push in the Nitto-style male plug (not included), and then release the collar. The plug should fully click into place.
  • Safety Valve: The safety valve should be checked periodically. With the tank full, gently pulling the ring outwards should release air under pressure. If it does not work, the compressor should be stopped immediately and serviced.
  • Shutting Down: After use, turn the compressor OFF, disconnect the power lead, and disconnect air tools and hoses.
  • Storage: Store the compressor in a secure, well-ventilated cabinet. The tank drain tap should be left open after use to allow excess air and moisture to vent, preventing corrosion inside the tank.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Maintenance (Before Use):
    • Check the oil level.
    • Ensure the tank drain tap is sealed.
    • Check safety valve operation.
  • Daily Maintenance (After Use):
    • Open the tank drain tap to release air and moisture.
    • Wipe down the air compressor.
    • Store safely and securely.
  • Oil Draining and Filling: To drain oil, loosen and remove the drain bolt, drain the oil into a suitable container, and dispose of it responsibly. Replace and tighten the drain bolt, then fill with fresh SAE30 oil to the top red dot on the sight glass.
  • After Every 50 Hours of Use:
    • Replace the air filter.
    • Drain oil completely and replace with fresh oil.
  • Cleaning: Always disconnect the compressor from the power supply and allow it to cool for about an hour before cleaning. Use only a damp, soft cloth; never use liquid or solvents. Keep ventilation slots and the air filter clean and free from dust to prevent overheating.
  • Power Cord Inspection: Regularly check the power cord and plug for damage. If damaged, it must be replaced by an authorised service facility.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides troubleshooting steps for common issues such as the compressor not starting, not building pressure, smelling like burnt oil, or not holding pressure. These steps include checking power connections, tank drain tap seal, air filter condition, oil level, and hose/tool leaks. If issues persist, an authorised service centre should be contacted.

Safety Instructions:

  • Work Area: Keep the work area tidy, well-lit, and free from combustible materials. Maintain at least 5 meters distance between the compressor and the work area, especially when spraying liquids.
  • Environment: Do not use the compressor in damp or wet conditions, or expose it to rain.
  • Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Ensure the compressor is disconnected from the mains supply before servicing or changing attachments.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety goggles, ear protection, and respiratory protection (e.g., dust/filter mask when spraying or working with dust-generating materials).
  • Clothing: Do not wear loose clothing, jewellery, or long hair that could get caught in moving machinery.
  • Footwear: Wear suitable non-slip safety footwear, especially if there is a risk of heavy objects or slippery floors.
  • Over-reaching: Maintain proper footing and balance; avoid abnormal stances.
  • Alertness: Operate the compressor only when alert and not under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets out of the work area and away from the compressor and tools. Store the unit securely when not in use.
  • Hot Components: Be aware that many components (pipes, pump, motor) become hot during use and can cause burns.
  • Air Jet: Never direct the jet of air or other liquids/gases towards your body, other persons, animals, or the compressor itself.
  • Unintentional Starting: Ensure the ON/OFF button is in the 'OFF' position before plugging the compressor into the mains supply.
  • Fire Precautions: Observe general fire precautions when using the compressor. Consult an expert on suitable fire extinguishers.
  • Modifications: Do not attempt to modify the air compressor, guards, or supplied accessories.
  • Stability: Always ensure the compressor is level and stable. Operating on unlevel ground can cause a lack of lubrication and pump seizure, voiding the warranty.
  • Damaged Parts: If any part of the unit is damaged, it must be serviced by an authorised service facility.
  • Unfamiliar Sounds/Vibrations: If the compressor makes unfamiliar sounds or vibrates excessively, switch it OFF immediately, disconnect from the mains, and investigate the cause or consult an authorised service facility.
