Overview

The Blancco 24 Bay Drive Eraser is an appliance designed for secure data erasure of SAS/SATA/SSD drives, supporting up to 24 drives simultaneously. This device is an integrated solution that includes a 3U server, two towers each with 12 drive bays, and pre-installed Blancco Drive Eraser and Blancco Management Console software. It comes with 100 per drive licenses of Blancco Drive Eraser Server Edition on a USB HASP key, along with power and data cables, and four 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch hard drive adapters. Users need to supply a USB keyboard, USB mouse, and VGA monitor.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Blancco 24 Bay Drive Eraser is to securely erase data from hard drives, ensuring that sensitive information cannot be recovered. It supports various drive types including SAS, SATA, and SSD. The erasure process is managed through the pre-installed Blancco Drive Eraser software, which can be operated in a standalone "Drive Eraser Only" mode or integrated with an external Management Console for enhanced reporting and licensing control. The appliance is capable of simultaneously erasing data from up to 24 drives.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Drive Bays: 24 (two towers with 12 bays each).
  • Supported Drive Types: SAS, SATA, SSD.
  • Adapters: Includes four 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch hard drive adapters. Additional adapters may be required for 1.8-inch, M.2, and mSATA drives.
  • Software: Pre-installed Blancco Drive Eraser and Blancco Management Console.
  • Licensing: 100 per drive licenses of Blancco Drive Eraser Server Edition on a USB HASP key.
  • Connectivity: USB ports for peripherals, PS2 ports (on some models), and 6x data cables for connecting towers to the server.
  • LED Indicators: Drive activity LED for SAS and SATA drives (Purple LED for SAS, Green LED for SATA).

Usage Features:

  • Drive Insertion: Drives are inserted into the caddy-less trays of the towers. For 2.5-inch drives, a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch adapter is used. For 1.8-inch, M.2, and mSATA drives, specific adapters are required.
  • Power On Sequence: The process involves inserting drives, turning on the two towers (waiting for drive LEDs to stop blinking), and then turning on the server.
  • Software Booting: The appliance boots into the Blancco Drive Eraser + Management Console mode by default. An alternative "Drive Eraser Only" mode is available.
  • Drive Detection: The software automatically detects connected drives. Users can verify detected drives on the "Erasure" tab. A "Refresh" button is available for re-scanning if drives are not detected.
  • Erasure Process: Once drives are detected, users can select an erasure standard (e.g., HMG Infosec Standard 5, Lower Standard) and verification percentage. The erasure process is initiated by pressing the "Erase" button or using the Ctrl + E shortcut.
  • Custom Fields: If configured, custom fields can be filled in the "Input & Edit" tab. These fields are crucial for report finalization, especially if marked as mandatory.
  • Reporting: After erasure, a report can be generated and viewed on the "Report" tab. Reports can be exported to a USB-stick or transferred to the Management Console. The Management Console allows for viewing, displaying, and exporting erasure reports to an external USB stick, and also provides access to available licenses.
  • Management Console Integration: The appliance can be connected to a LAN cable for remote access to the Blancco Management Console, which enables centralized control, licensing, and reporting.
  • Hot Swap Function: The appliance supports hot swapping of drives without affecting the erasure process of other drives in the appliance.
  • Settings-window: Provides access to general, network, wireless network, and Management Console settings.
  • User Interface (UI/GUI): The appliance features a User Interface (UI) or Graphical User Interface (GUI) for easy navigation and operation.
  • WLAN: Supports Wireless LAN for data transmission over short distances.

Maintenance Features:

  • Software Updates: The Drive Eraser software and Management Console are regularly updated. Users can check for updates and download them from the Blancco website.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as undetected drives, recommending checking connectors. For more complex issues, Blancco Technical Support can be contacted.
  • ESD Precautions: Users are advised to follow proper ESD procedures to prevent damage to drives and avoid ESD shock, emphasizing the importance of training for handling sensitive ESD devices.
  • Drive Removal: After erasure, drives can be safely removed. This involves ensuring the process is complete, unlocking and opening the tower's flip door, pulling the lever outwards, and removing the drive from the cage.
  • Licensing Management: Licenses can be activated and managed through the "Licensing" tab. New licenses can be added by browsing for the license file and clicking "Submit."
  • Report Handling and License Control: The appliance can be switched to the Management Console side (MC Side) for report handling and license control, accessible via the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Tab or by using tabs on the top of the screen.
