8. Digital radio: DAB/DAB+
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB or DAB+) is the digital successor to
analogue VHF broadcasting. Digital broadcasting has some differences
from the well-known analogue VHF radio:
One than more radio stations broadcast on a single channel – this is
called ‘multiplexing’ (MUX) (or program packages).
The radio stations on a specific MUX are called ‘services’ (this means radio
stations and/or data services).
In Germany, for example, MUX are available regionally from public
broadcasters; moreover, there are currently two MUX that can be
received throughout Germany:
DR DEUTSCHLAND and ANTENNE DE.
A MUX can often be received on the same channel throughout the
broadcasting area through transmitters in different locations (which is a
common RF network) and you do not need to change a channel to enjoy
continued service. This gives more room for additional program
providers.
DAB stations do not output a noise known from VHF radio; a DAB station
audio broadcast is either received with a consistent quality – or not
received at all when error correction is no longer able to reconstruct the
broadcast signal, accompanied by a short “garble”.
Playing DAB/DAB+ radio
Use the SRC or DAB button to select one of the memory levels DAB1
dAB2 or DAB3.
Some memory levels are inactive depending on the setting; for
example, only the DAB1 memory level is active. For information on
customisation, see section SETTINGS | MENU.
DAB services can be called up in two ways, described below:
In LIST mode, all services known to the device can be viewed in
alphabetical order.
In SERVICE mode, the search for the next or previous multiplex
currently being received always takes place after the last or first service of
the current multiplex has been passed.
Selection of service in LIST mode
To use this function, select from the menu (see section SETTINGS | MENU)
for DAB MODE in LIST mode (this is the factory default setting).
You can scroll through the alphabetically sorted services by briefly
pressing one of the buttons on the multifunction switch.
After approximately one second without pressing the button again, the
service selected on the display will be played.
You can move to the next or previous starting letter in the alphabetical
list by pressing and holding down one of the buttons on the
multifunction switch until you reach the desired starting letter.
List mode displays all services in alphabetical order that are known to
the car radio; currently unavailable services may also be displayed or
there may be gaps in the list. The display will show NO SIGNAL.
The station list can be updated by pressing and holding the DAB button
or by selecting the DAB SERVICE SCAN menu option . The car radio will
display SCAN and update the list of services, unavailable or incorrect
services will be removed from the list and newly found services will be
added.
