Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the BMW Motorrad System Helmet 6 EVO, a motorcycle helmet designed for safe and confident use in various traffic situations.

Function Description

The BMW System Helmet 6 EVO is a high-strength motorcycle helmet designed to provide protection during motorcycling. It features a multi-layer, glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFK) outer shell with reinforcement layers in specific loading zones, such as the sun visor area. The inner shell is made of EPS (expanded polystyrene) and EPP (expanded polypropylene) with different densities to optimize damping properties.

The helmet includes a chin part with a central opening button and a four-joint mechanism, supported by spiral springs for easy opening. The chin strap features a snap lock and neck tapes for secure fastening, and an adjustable chin spoiler extension.

For visibility, the helmet is equipped with a clear outer visor that has a scratch-proof coating. An inner visor pane, made of hydrophilic material, provides anti-fog properties. The helmet also integrates a sun visor with a scratch-proof surface, offering 100% UVA and UVB protection, operated by a slider on the helmet edge.

Ventilation is managed through a centrally arranged rocker switch for the visor, and a slide switch for forehead and head ventilation, with an additional opening in the neck area. The helmet's interior is fully removable and made of moisture-transporting material.

The System Helmet 6 EVO can be equipped with a wireless communication system, which integrates completely into the helmet. This system allows for multiple wireless connections simultaneously, offers an operating time of 10 to 12 hours, and supports the A2DP standard for stereo music sources.

Usage Features

To use the helmet, first determine the correct size by measuring the head circumference (approx. 2 cm above the eyebrows around the thickest point of the head). The helmet should fit tightly and not be turnable sideways, with helmet motions directly noticeable on the scalp when turning forward and backward. The chin strap's adjustment range must be sufficient.

To don the helmet, pull the opening button forward and swivel the chin part upward. After placing the helmet on, position the chinstrap snap lock and insert the latching tab as far as possible until the chinstrap fits against the throat, at least into the first indentation. Close the chin part, ensuring it engages on both sides with an audible click. The chin strap must be buckled correctly before riding and kept buckled at all times for safety. The chin strap length can be adjusted using the B-ring at the helmet side.

The chin spoiler extension can be adjusted or replaced. The "Low Noise" variant is factory-installed, but an "Air" extension is enclosed for different environmental conditions or individual demands. To change it, open the chin part, align the desired extension, and press it onto the Velcro elements, then close the chin part.

Ventilation is controlled by sliding the hood backward to open head ventilation and forward to close it. Visor ventilation is opened by pressing the bottom and closed by pressing the top.

The sun visor is operated via a slider on the helmet edge and is continuously adjustable. It should only be used under optimum light conditions due to its transparency of approx. 20%.

The inner visor pane can be removed if its reflection effect is perceived as disturbing, in which case the excenter pins in the visor should be replaced with dummy plugs.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the helmet's longevity and protective capabilities. BMW Motorrad recommends replacing the helmet after five years due to aging and wear. If the helmet is involved in a crash or impact, it must be replaced immediately, as its protective ability may be compromised, even if damage is not visible.

For cleaning the outer helmet shell, use a mild solution of soap in water or BMW helmet cleaner. Avoid petrol or solvents to prevent damage to the paint finish. Cleaning agents containing alcohol are permissible.

The interior head pad can be hand-washed at a maximum of 30 °C using a mild soap solution in water, then allowed to air dry slowly.

The visor should be cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild solution of soap in water or BMW visor cleaner. Do not use petrol, solvents, window or glass cleaners, or other alcohol-containing cleaning agents, as these can damage the anti-scratch finish. Stubborn foreign matter can be softened by laying a wet cloth on the surface before wiping off. Use a lint-free cloth for drying.

The inner visor pane and sun visor should only be cleaned with water or a mild soap solution. Do not apply anti-fog gel, spray, or similar agents, as this can cause irreparable damage.

To maintain the visor seal, apply talc yearly at the beginning and end of the season.

For storage, especially after intensive cleaning, riding in the rain, or long trips in cold weather, the inner visor pane needs time to reactivate its anti-fog properties. During this period, it may absorb less humidity. Dry, airy storage accelerates this reactivation. If the helmet is stored for extended periods, the visor should be opened to allow humidity to escape. A milky layer that may appear after long storage can be removed with a dampened fine microfibre cloth.

The cheek/neck pads and head pad are removable for cleaning or replacement. To remove the cheek/neck pads, pull the strap down between the outer and inner helmet shell, loosen snap fasteners, and remove the chinstrap. The neck straps also need to be pulled out of the cheek/neck pad. Installation is the reverse process, ensuring neck straps are not twisted and snap fasteners are closed. To remove the head pad, loosen the locking tab and snap fastener, then loosen Velcro elements from the center bar. Installation involves positioning the head pad, securing the center bar to the Velcro, and then securing the snap fastener and locking tabs.
