Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the Bosch KGE.. fridge-freezer, covering its functions, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Bosch KGE.. fridge-freezer is designed for refrigerating and freezing food, as well as for making ice. It is suitable for use in home environments and complies with EU Directive 2004/108/EC and EN 60335-2-24 safety regulations for electrical appliances. The appliance contains a small quantity of environmentally friendly but flammable refrigerant R600a, with the amount specified on the rating plate. The refrigeration circuit has been checked for leaks.

The appliance features separate compartments for refrigeration and freezing, each with independent temperature controls. The refrigerator compartment allows temperature settings from +2 °C to +8 °C, while the freezer compartment can be set from –16 °C to -24 °C. The appliance includes "Super cooling" and "Super freezing" functions to rapidly cool or freeze food, respectively.

Alarm functions are integrated to alert users to potential issues. A door alarm activates if the refrigerator compartment door is left open for more than one minute. A temperature alarm signals if the freezer compartment becomes too warm, indicating a risk of thawing. The appliance also offers a "Holiday mode" that automatically switches the refrigerator compartment temperature to +14 °C to save energy during prolonged absences.

An automatic self-test program is available to identify potential faults that may require customer service intervention.

Usage Features

Installation and Initial Setup: After installation, the appliance should remain off for at least one hour to allow compressor oil to settle. Before first use, the interior should be cleaned. The appliance requires connection to a 220–240 V/50 Hz alternating current socket with a protective conductor, fused with a 10 to 16 A fuse. It is designed for specific climate classes (SN, N, ST, T), indicating the permitted ambient temperature ranges for optimal operation. Proper ventilation is crucial; the rear panel's air circulation must not be obstructed to prevent increased power consumption.

Temperature Setting: Temperatures for both the refrigerator and freezer compartments are set using dedicated selection buttons. The chosen temperatures are displayed and saved. The factory recommended settings are +4 °C for the refrigerator and -18 °C for the freezer.

Special Modes:

  • Super Cooling: Activates for approximately 15 hours, setting the refrigerator to its coldest temperature. Useful for fast cooling of large quantities of food or drinks.
  • Super Freezing: Should be switched on several hours (typically 4-6 hours, or 24 hours for maximum capacity) before placing fresh food in the freezer to prevent temperature rise and ensure rapid, gentle freezing. It automatically switches off after approximately 2.5 days.
  • Holiday Mode: Engaged via a dedicated button, it sets the refrigerator to +14 °C. No food should be stored in the refrigerator during this mode.

Storage Guidelines:

  • Refrigerator Compartment: Ideal for ready meals, cakes, pastries, preserved food, condensed milk, hard cheese, and cold-sensitive fruits and vegetables. The coldest zone is on the rear panel and in the chiller container, suitable for perishable items like fish, sausage, and meat. The warmest zone is at the top of the door, suitable for hard cheese and butter. Food should be wrapped or covered to retain aroma, color, and freshness, and to prevent flavor transfer and discoloration of plastic parts.
  • Freezer Compartment: Used for storing deep-frozen food, making ice cubes, and freezing fresh food. Food should be placed in airtight containers to prevent flavor loss and drying out. Suitable packaging includes plastic film, polyethylene tubular film, aluminum foil, and freezer containers. Certain foods like raw vegetables (lettuce, radishes), eggs in shells, whole fruits (apples, pears, peaches), hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, soured milk, sour cream, crème fraîche, and mayonnaise are not suitable for freezing.
  • Chiller Container: Maintains temperatures lower than the main refrigerator compartment (potentially below 0 °C), making it ideal for fish, meat, and sausage. Not suitable for cold-sensitive produce.
  • Vegetable Container with Humidity Controller: Allows adjustment of air humidity based on the quantity of fruits and vegetables stored, optimizing storage conditions. Cold-sensitive fruits (pineapple, banana, papaya, citrus) and vegetables (aubergines, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes) should be stored outside the refrigerator at +8 °C to +12 °C.

Interior Fittings: The appliance features various adjustable and removable fittings:

  • Butter and cheese compartment: Opens by pressing the flap, removable for cleaning.
  • Adjustable "EasyLift" door shelf: Height can be adjusted without removal by pressing side buttons.
  • Bottle holder: Prevents bottles from falling over.
  • Glass shelves: Removable to vary shelf arrangement.
  • Variable shelf: Can be folded down for flexible storage of food and bottles.
  • Pull-out container: Removable for easy loading and unloading, with a variable holder.
  • Bottle shelf: Securely stores bottles, with an adjustable holder.
  • Frozen food containers (small and large): Removable for full utilization of freezer volume, allowing food to be stacked directly on shelves.
  • Ice cube tray: For making ice cubes.
  • Ice block: Can be used to slow thawing during power failures or to temporarily cool food.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning the Appliance:

  • Preparation: Switch off the appliance, unplug it, remove frozen food (store in a cool place with ice packs), and wait for frost to thaw.
  • Interior Cleaning: Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a pH-neutral washing-up liquid. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaning agents, scouring sponges, and steam cleaners. Ensure rinsing water does not enter the light.
  • Door Seal: Wipe with clear water and dry thoroughly.
  • Condensation Outlet: Regularly clean the condensation channel and drainage hole with a cotton bud to ensure proper drainage. The condensation outlet fascia can be removed for cleaning.
  • Interior Fittings: All variable parts (shelves, containers, door shelves) can be removed for cleaning. Do not clean shelves and containers in a dishwasher as they may deform.
  • Post-Cleaning: Reconnect and switch on the appliance, then return frozen food.

Defrosting:

  • Refrigerator Compartment: Defrosts automatically. Condensation flows into the evaporation area via channels and a drainage hole.
  • Freezer Compartment: Requires manual defrosting. A layer of frost impairs refrigeration and increases power consumption.
    1. Switch on super freezing approximately 4 hours before defrosting to lower food temperature.
    2. Switch off the appliance and unplug it or switch off the fuse.
    3. Place frozen food in a cool location with ice packs.
    4. Open the condensation outlet (Fig. 15).
    5. Use the shelf for large bottles (removed from the door) to collect condensation.
    6. To accelerate defrosting, place two pans of hot water on a trivet inside.
    7. Once defrosted, pour out water, wipe the compartment dry, and close the condensation outlet.
    8. Re-insert the bottle shelf and reconnect the appliance.
    • Caution: Do not use sharp objects to remove frost, as this can damage refrigerant tubes and cause eye injuries or ignition.

Addressing Odours: If unpleasant odours occur:

  1. Switch off the appliance.
  2. Remove all food.
  3. Clean the interior and all food packages.
  4. Seal strong-smelling food.
  5. Switch the appliance back on and store food.
  6. Check for odour persistence after 24 hours.

Light (LED): The appliance features a maintenance-free LED light. Repairs should only be performed by customer service or authorized technicians.

Energy Saving Tips:

  • Install in a dry, well-ventilated room away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Allow warm food and drinks to cool before placing them in the appliance.
  • Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator compartment to utilize its low temperature for cooling.
  • Regularly defrost the freezer compartment to prevent frost buildup, which increases power consumption.
  • Minimize door opening time.
  • Occasionally clean the back of the appliance to maintain efficiency.
  • If available, fit wall spacers as per installation instructions to achieve the indicated energy rating.
