Overview

The Bosch PLR 25 is a digital laser rangefinder designed for precise measurement of distances, lengths, heights, clearances, and for calculating areas and volumes. This versatile measuring tool is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, offering a range of features to enhance accuracy and ease of use.

Function Description

The PLR 25 operates by emitting a laser beam to a target surface and measuring the time it takes for the reflected beam to return. This allows for quick and accurate distance measurements. The device is equipped with various measuring modes, including:

  • Length Measurement: This is the default mode upon switching on the device. Users simply aim the laser beam at the target surface and press the measuring button to obtain a length measurement.
  • Area Measurement: For calculating the area of a surface, the user measures two lengths (e.g., length and width) sequentially. The device automatically calculates and displays the area.
  • Volume Measurement: To determine the volume of a space, the user measures three lengths (e.g., length, width, and height) one after another. The device then automatically calculates and displays the volume.
  • Continuous Measurement (Tracking): In this mode, the measuring tool continuously updates the measurement value approximately every 0.5 seconds as it is moved relative to the target. This is useful for finding a specific distance or for marking out lengths.

The PLR 25 also includes memory functions, allowing users to store, add, and subtract measured values. This is particularly useful for complex calculations or for keeping a record of multiple measurements. The device retains stored values even after being switched off.

Usage Features

The PLR 25 is designed for user-friendly operation with several key features:

  • On/Off and Memory Delete Button: A single button controls power and allows for the deletion of the last individual measured value or the entire memory contents.
  • Reference Level Selection: The device offers two reference levels for measurement: the rear edge of the measuring tool (ideal for placing against a wall) and the front measuring-tool edge (for measuring from a table edge). This can be easily switched via a dedicated button.
  • Memory Add and Subtract Buttons: Dedicated buttons allow for quick addition ("M+") and subtraction ("M-") of current measurements to or from the stored memory value.
  • Clear Display: The display shows the current measurement, the selected measuring mode, the reference level, and indicators for battery status and laser activity. In continuous measurement, the last individual measured value is at the bottom, and the final result is at the top.
  • Alignment Aid: For easier sighting over larger distances, the device features an alignment aid on its top side, with the laser beam running parallel to this line of sight.
  • Automatic Switch-Off: To conserve battery life, the measuring tool automatically switches off after approximately 5 minutes of inactivity. The laser beam also switches off automatically after 20 seconds if no measurement is taken after sighting.
  • Warning Labels: The device comes with a warning label regarding laser radiation, emphasizing the importance of not staring into the beam or directing it at persons or animals. Users are instructed to attach a supplied sticker in their national language over the German text.
  • Accessories: For improved visibility of the laser beam in bright conditions or outdoors, optional laser viewing glasses and a laser target plate are available.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the PLR 25:

  • Protective Pouch: The measuring tool should always be stored and transported in its supplied protective pouch to prevent damage.
  • Cleaning: The device should be kept clean at all times. Debris can be wiped off with a moist and soft cloth. It is crucial not to immerse the measuring tool in water or other fluids and to avoid using cleaning agents or solvents.
  • Reception Lens Care: The reception lens, similar to eyeglasses or camera lenses, requires careful maintenance to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Battery Management: The device is powered by alkali-manganese or rechargeable batteries. Users are advised to replace all batteries/rechargeable batteries simultaneously, using the same brand and type. The battery symbol on the display indicates low battery status, prompting replacement when it flashes. For long-term storage, batteries should be removed to prevent corrosion and discharge.
  • Accuracy Check: After severe impacts or falls, an accuracy check is recommended. This involves measuring a precisely known section (3-10 meters indoors, smooth and reflective target surface) 10 times and comparing the individual measurements to the mean value. The deviation should not exceed ±3 mm.
  • Temperature Considerations: The measuring tool should be protected from moisture, direct sunlight, and extreme temperature variations. If exposed to large temperature changes, it should be allowed to adjust to the ambient temperature before use to maintain accuracy.
  • Professional Repair: In case of malfunction or if corrective measures do not resolve an error, the measuring tool should only be repaired by qualified specialists using original spare parts to ensure safety and functionality. The device should not be opened by the user.
