Do you have a question about the Boss DM-2 Delay and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The BOSS DM-2 is a compact delay pedal designed for musical instruments, offering a range of delay effects from 20ms to 300ms. It incorporates a Noise Reduction Circuit to ensure high-quality sound output. The unit is equipped with an LED indicator that displays whether the effect is On or Off, and also serves as a battery check.

Function Description:

The DM-2 allows musicians to control various aspects of the delay effect through its intuitive knob controls:

  • REPEAT RATE: This knob adjusts the repetition rate of the echoes.
  • INTENSITY: This control manages the intensity of the returning echo. Turning it clockwise increases the repetition rate, while fully turning it counter-clockwise results in a Single Delay. The manual notes that turning this knob too far clockwise can cause feedback, which may be desirable for certain special effects.
  • ECHO VOLUME: This knob controls the output level of the echo. Turning it clockwise increases the level of the delayed sound, while fully turning it counter-clockwise produces only the normal, unaffected sound.

Technical Specifications:

  • Power: The unit can be powered by a 9V battery or an AC Adapter (BOSS ACA-100, ACA-120, ACA-220, or ACA-240, depending on voltage).
  • Current Draw: 11mA at 9V.
  • Controls: REPEAT RATE, INTENSITY, ECHO VOLUME, Normal/Effect Changeover Switch, Indicator.
  • Jacks: Input, Output, AC Adapter.
  • Delay Time: Continuously variable from 20ms to 300ms.
  • Residual Noise: Less than -100dBm (IHF-A).
  • Input Impedance: 470kΩ.
  • Output Load Impedance: Over 10kΩ.
  • Dimensions: 70(W) x 55(H) x 125(D)mm.
  • Weight: 450g.
  • Switching System: Features a unique FET switching system that is entirely electronic, ensuring no audible clicks or pops when engaging or disengaging the effect.

Usage Features:

  • Powering On/Off: The unit is powered on by plugging into the input jack. To conserve battery life, it's recommended to unplug from the input jack when not in use.
  • Indicator LED: The LED indicator not only shows the effect status (On/Off) but also helps check battery life. If the LED fails to light or becomes dim, it's time to replace the battery.
  • Connecting Instruments: The DM-2 can be connected between various instruments (Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar, Keyboard) and an amplifier.
  • AC Adapter Use: When operating from an AC line, use a BOSS AC Adaptor specifically designed for the DM-2. The manual warns against using different adaptors, as this may cause improper operation or no sound.
  • Environmental Considerations: Avoid using the DM-2 in very dusty locations or under high temperature or humidity conditions.
  • Setup Procedure:
    1. Connect all necessary cords and set all knobs to the illustrated default positions.
    2. Depress the pedal switch. The LED will light to indicate "EFFECT ON" and extinguish for "EFFECT OFF."
    3. Turn the REPEAT RATE control to the desired position.
    4. Adjust the repetition rate by setting the INTENSITY knob to the proper position.
    5. Turn the ECHO knob to the proper position.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The DM-2 uses one 9-volt battery. To replace it, loosen the thumb screw on the pedal to open the cover. The battery sits in a special compartment under the footswitch plate, making replacement tool-free.
    • Procedure: Loosen the screw, open the pedal, remove the old battery, replace with a fresh one, set the coil spring onto the projection at the rear of the pedal, shut the cover, and insert/tighten the screw. Be careful not to catch the battery strap or coil spring.
  • Battery Care:
    • Remove the battery if the unit will not be used for a long period to prevent current leakage.
    • Replace the battery when its voltage drops, as this can lead to inferior effect quality or no sound.
    • Ensure the battery is snapped into its connector even when using an AC adaptor. If the AC adaptor cord comes out during performance, the unit will seamlessly switch to battery power.
  • AC Adaptor Use: Power is switched on when a plug is inserted into the input jack. When not in use, keep the plug out of the jack.
