Overview

The BOSTITCH CAP60PB-OF Air Compressor is a high-performance portable air compressor designed to provide compressed air for various pneumatic tools, including fastening tools. This manual outlines its operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines.

Function Description:

The primary function of the BOSTITCH CAP60PB-OF Air Compressor is to compress ambient air and store it in a tank for use with pneumatic tools. It is an oil-free compressor, meaning it does not require oil for lubrication of its pump, simplifying maintenance. The compressor automatically cycles on and off to maintain the desired tank pressure, ensuring a continuous supply of compressed air for the connected tools. A pressure switch controls the motor and pump, activating them when tank pressure falls below a set "cut-in" pressure and deactivating them when the upper operating pressure limit is reached. A regulator knob allows users to adjust the air pressure delivered to the discharge line, tailoring it to the specific requirements of the pneumatic tool being used. The unit is equipped with a safety valve to prevent over-pressurization of the air tanks, factory pre-set at 150 PSI.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 2HP (Peak) / 1.5HP (Running), 115V - 60HZ.
  • Fuse Requirements: 15 Amps minimum.
  • Operating Pressure: 0 - 135 PSI.
  • Safety Valve Setting: 150 PSI.
  • Air Delivery: 3.4 CFM @ 40 PSI, 2.1 CFM @ 90 PSI.
  • Maximum Amps at Working Pressure: 11.3 Amps.
  • Tank Size: 6 Gallons.
  • Air Outlet: 1/4" NPT.
  • Pressure Switch Settings: On @ 105 PSI, Off @ 135 PSI.
  • Weight: 37 lbs.
  • Duty Cycle: To ensure long life, the compressor should not operate on more than a 50% duty cycle (i.e., pump air for more than 50% of one hour).

Usage Features:

  • Pressure Switch (A): This is the activation mechanism for starting and stopping the compressor. Pulling it out to the "On" position starts the motor and pump, compressing air until the tank reaches the upper operating pressure. When tank pressure drops below the "cut-in" pressure, the compressor automatically restarts. Pushing it in to the "Off" position shuts down the unit.
  • Tank Pressure Gauge (B): Displays the current air pressure inside the tank in PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • Regulated Pressure Gauge (C): Shows the amount of pressure being delivered to the discharge line (E), as set by the regulator.
  • Regulator Knob (D): Used to adjust the discharge air pressure. Turning the knob clockwise increases pressure, while turning it counter-clockwise decreases pressure.
  • Discharge Line (E): The outlet where the air hose is attached.
  • Portability: The compressor is designed to be moved using its handle. Users are advised not to drag or pull it by the power cord or air hose.
  • Electrical Grounding: The product is equipped with a 3-prong grounding plug for use with a nominal 120-volt circuit. Proper grounding is crucial to prevent electrical shock. Temporary adapters may be used if a properly grounded outlet is unavailable, but a permanent grounded outlet (sketch A) should be installed by a qualified electrician as soon as possible.
  • Thermal Overload Protector: The motor includes a thermal overload protector that automatically shuts off the motor if it overheats and restarts it once the temperature returns to normal.
  • Start-Up Procedure:
    1. Verify the On/Off switch is in the Off position.
    2. Ensure tank air pressure is at 0 PSI.
    3. Attach the air hose to the discharge line.
    4. Plug the unit into a properly grounded outlet.
    5. Pull out the On/Off switch to On.
    6. Adjust the pressure regulator to the required setting for the air tool.
  • Shut-Off Procedure:
    1. Push in the On/Off switch to the Off position. Note: Do not stop the compressor by pulling out the plug, as this can cause excessive heat buildup and damage the motor.

Maintenance Features:

  • Oil-Free Pump: This compressor is equipped with an oil-free pump, eliminating the need to replace or check oil.
  • Draining Tank (E - Drain Cock): Moisture will build up inside the air tank due to condensation. The tank must be drained daily to prevent rust and thinning of the steel tank, which could lead to tank explosion.
    • Procedure for Twist-Style Drain Cocks:
      1. Verify the compressor is turned Off.
      2. Holding the handle, tilt the compressor toward the drain cock so it is at the bottom of the tank.
      3. Turn the drain cock to open the valve.
      4. Keep the compressor tilted until all moisture has been removed.
  • General Maintenance Safety: Always disconnect all accessories, attachments, and the compressor from the electrical source before performing any service or maintenance.
  • Replacement Parts: Only use Genuine BOSTITCH replacement parts for repairs.
  • Authorized Service: Any service beyond basic maintenance (like draining the tank) should only be performed by an Authorized BOSTITCH Service Center.
  • Tank Integrity: It is crucial NOT to perform welding or repair operations on the air tank, as this can severely impair tank strength and create a hazardous condition, voiding the warranty. Damaged or modified tanks can rupture and must be replaced immediately.

Safety Warnings and Instructions:

  • Read Manual: All users must read and fully understand the owner's manual before assembling, operating, or maintaining the compressor.
  • Moving Parts: Never touch moving parts. Keep all body parts, hair, clothing, and jewelry away from moving parts. Do not operate without guards and shrouds in place.
  • Attachments/Accessories: Never exceed the maximum allowable pressure recommended by the manufacturer for any attachment or accessory.
  • Personal Protection: Always wear proper eye protection (conforming to ANSI Z87.1-1989), hearing protection, and head protection (conforming to ANSI Z89.1-1986) when required.
  • Compressed Air: Never aim compressed air blast at anyone. Compressed air can propel loose particles at high speed.
  • Children: Keep children away from the area of operation.
  • Transporting: Use the handle to move the compressor. Disconnect the air compressor before transporting.
  • Ventilation: Do not spray flammable liquid in a confined area. Ensure the spray area is well ventilated. Do not smoke or spray where sparks or flames are present. Keep compressors as far from spraying areas as possible.
  • Risk of Burns: Avoid touching cylinder head parts or tubing during or immediately after operation, as they generate heat and can cause serious burns.
