The Boston Scientific BodyGuardian™ MINI PLUS is a heart monitor designed to detect irregular heart rhythms, prescribed by a physician and supported by Boston Scientific Cardiac Diagnostic Services. This device is intended for patient use over a prescribed period, with continuous monitoring and data transmission to healthcare providers.
Function Description
The BodyGuardian™ MINI PLUS system comprises a compact monitor, a smartphone, and either adhesive Strips or an ECG lead set with electrodes. The monitor continuously records cardiac data, which is then transmitted wirelessly to the accompanying smartphone. The smartphone acts as a hub, sending the collected data to Boston Scientific Cardiac Diagnostic Services for analysis. The system is designed to be user-friendly, allowing patients to wear the monitor discreetly while performing daily activities, including showering, bathing, and even submerging in water up to 3 feet deep, thanks to its waterproof design (excluding the smartphone).
Patients can manually record symptoms experienced during the monitoring period directly on the monitor, which are then transmitted to the smartphone and included in the data sent to the diagnostic services. The system also provides visual and audible indicators on the monitor and detailed status updates on the smartphone application to keep the patient informed about the device's operation, battery status, and skin contact quality.
Important Technical Specifications
- Water Resistance: The monitor and its accessories (Strips and ECG lead set) are fully waterproof and can be submerged in water up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) deep. The micro-USB port on the monitor should not be exposed to water when unattached from an accessory. The smartphone is not waterproof and should be kept away from water.
- Battery Life and Charging: The monitor has a rechargeable battery with a charging time of approximately 1.5-2.5 hours. The smartphone should be charged nightly. The system is designed to continue collecting data even if the phone battery depletes or if the phone is out of range, storing data on the monitor until a connection is re-established.
- Connectivity: The monitor communicates with the smartphone via Bluetooth. The smartphone uses cellular network or Wi-Fi to transmit data to Boston Scientific Cardiac Diagnostic Services.
- Monitor Placement: The monitor can be worn with either adhesive Strips (vertical or horizontal placement options) or an ECG lead set with electrodes (1-wire, 2-wire, or 4-wire configurations). Specific placement instructions are provided to ensure optimal signal quality.
- Smartphone Functionality: The BodyGuardian™ phone is dedicated solely to monitoring functions and cannot be used for making phone calls (including 911) or other smartphone activities. It supports multiple languages and offers instructional videos.
Usage Features
- Ease of Attachment: The monitor easily slides into the black molding of the Strip or connects to the center connector of the ECG lead wires. Electrodes snap into place on the leads.
- Skin Preparation: Proper skin preparation (removing hair, cleaning with saline wipes or soap and water, drying thoroughly, avoiding lotions/oils/perfumes/alcohol wipes, and not abrading the skin) is crucial for good skin contact and signal quality.
- Symptom Recording: Patients can press a button on the monitor to record symptoms, which are then selected and saved on the smartphone interface. Up to three symptoms can be selected per event.
- Monitor Switching (for 2 monitors): If two monitors are provided, patients are instructed to always wear one while the other is connected to the charger. Switching involves detaching the worn monitor, plugging it into the charger, and attaching the fully-charged monitor to the Strip or lead set. The phone automatically detects the new monitor.
- Monitor Removal (for 1 monitor): For a single monitor, it is removed from the Strip/lead set, charged, and then reattached to the chest.
- Travel: The BodyGuardian™ MINI PLUS is safe for air travel. Patients are advised to contact Boston Scientific Cardiac Diagnostic Services before departure, power off the phone during flight, and power it on after landing. The monitor itself does not need to be removed during air travel.
- MRI Compatibility: The BodyGuardian™ MINI PLUS cannot be worn during an MRI. Both the monitor and the Strip/ECG lead set must be removed, and monitoring can be resumed after the MRI.
Maintenance Features
- Strip Replacement: Strips are disposable and should be replaced when they no longer adhere to the skin. Removal is recommended during showering to ease the process and minimize skin irritation.
- ECG Electrode Replacement: ECG electrodes are disposable and should be changed every 3 days or when they lose adhesiveness.
- Troubleshooting: The manual provides detailed troubleshooting steps for common issues such as "Poor Skin Contact" messages and the phone displaying "PREPARING MONITOR" for an extended time. These steps include checking monitor attachment, skin adhesion, chest placement, skin preparation, and replacing Strips or electrodes.
- Contact Information: Comprehensive contact information is provided for patient services, returning monitors, billing assistance, and patient benefit quotes, available via phone and email. Instructional videos are also accessible on the BodyGuardian™ smartphone.
- Equipment Return: At the end of the monitoring period, all equipment (powered-off monitor(s), phone, charging cord, unopened Strips/ECG lead set, and patient survey) must be packed in the provided postage-paid box and returned. Failure to return equipment may result in an invoice for its value.
