How to troubleshoot a BRADEN CH400B Power Tool hoist that won't lower smoothly?
    • L
      Lisa HoweAug 8, 2025
If the Braden Power Tool hoist isn't lowering the load smoothly, it could be due to a defective brake cylinder seal. To check this, disconnect the swivel tee from the brake release port and connect a hand pump with a gauge and shut-off valve to the –4 JIC fitting in the brake release port. Apply 1,000 PSI (6,900 kPa) to the brake, close the shut-off valve, and let it stand for five minutes. If there's any pressure loss, the brake cylinder should be disassembled to inspect the sealing surfaces and replace the seals. Also, the friction brake might not release because of damaged brake discs, which requires the same inspection procedure.

What to do if the Braden Power Tool brake will not hold a load?
    • A
      Angela GuzmanAug 12, 2025
If the Braden Power Tool hoist brake won't hold a load in neutral, it could be due to excessive system back pressure acting on the brake release port, requiring the same remedies as for Trouble B2. Alternatively, the friction brake might not hold because of worn or damaged brake discs, which calls for the same solution as Trouble A2. Another possibility is a slipping brake clutch. To address this, drain the old gear oil, flush the hoist with solvent, thoroughly drain the solvent, and refill the hoist with the recommended planetary gear oil. The brake clutch itself may be damaged or worn, necessitating disassembly and inspection.

Why is my BRADEN CH400B Power Tool leaking oil from the vent plug?
    • D
      david39Aug 16, 2025
If oil is leaking from the vent plug of your Braden Power Tool, it might be due to high system back pressure or contaminated oil, which can damage the motor seal. System back pressure must not exceed 150 PSI (1,030 kPa) for a gear motor or 30 PSI (207 kPa) for a piston motor. Inspect the hydraulic system for any restrictions in the return line from the control valve to the reservoir and ensure the control valve and plumbing are properly sized for the hoist motor. An oil analysis may reveal contamination that has worn the motor shaft and seal. If so, thoroughly flush the entire hydraulic system, install new filters and oil, and replace the motor seal.

Why does my Braden Power Tool chatter when lifting heavy loads?
    • R
      randall76Aug 29, 2025
If the Braden Power Tool hoist chatters while raising the rated load, it could be due to the same reasons as Trouble D2. Another potential cause is that the hydraulic oil flow to the motor may be too low, which has the same remedies as Trouble E2. Finally, the controls may be operated too quickly, which requires operator training.

How to fix a BRADEN CH400B Power Tool when the wire rope does not spool smoothly?
    • T
      Traci DavisSep 3, 2025
If the wire rope on your Braden Power Tool does not spool smoothly on the drum, verify the mounting distance and fleet angle. The hoist may be mounted too close to the main sheave, causing the fleet angle to exceed 1-1/2 degrees. The hoist may not be mounted perpendicular to an imaginary line between the center of the cable drum and the first sheave, refer to 'Hoist Installation.' Ensure that you are using the correct lay rope by consulting a wire rope manufacturer for their recommendation. Overloading the hoist could cause permanent set in the wire rope, which would require replacing the wire rope and conducting operator/rigger training.

Why does my BRADEN CH400B hoist run hot?
    • D
      donaldsonbrentNov 20, 2025
If your Braden Power Tool hoist runs hot, it could be due to several reasons. The causes are the same as for Trouble D1. Excessive hydraulic oil temperatures may stem from a plugged heat exchanger, which requires thorough cleaning of the exterior and flushing of the interior, or from having too low or too high an oil level in the hydraulic reservoir, which requires filling or draining to the proper level. It could also be the same as D2, or the hydraulic pump may not be operating efficiently. Another cause may be that the prime mover is low on horsepower or RPM. In this case, tune or adjust the prime mover, check the suction line for damage, and if the pump is belt-driven, check for slipping belts, replacing or tightening them as needed. If the pump is worn, consider replacing it. Disassem...

What to do if BRADEN CH400B Power Tool hoist will not hoist the rated load?
    • J
      Joanna MillerNov 24, 2025
If the Braden Power Tool hoist isn't hoisting the rated load, ensure the mounting surface is reinforced and level, using shims if necessary. Refer to 'Hoist Installation.' Loosen and then evenly retighten all hoist mounting bolts to the recommended torque. Also, the system relief valve may be set too low. To check this, install a gauge into the inlet port of the brake valve, apply a stall pull load, and monitor the pressure, comparing it to hoist specifications. Adjust the relief valve as needed. Note that if the pressure doesn't increase proportionally to the adjustment, the relief valve may be contaminated or worn out, possibly requiring disassembly or replacement. Also, be certain hydraulic system temperature is not more than 180°F (82°C). The hoist line pull rating is based on 1st laye...
