Overview

This document is an installation and operating instruction manual for a Light Duty Commercial Electric Water Heater. It provides comprehensive guidance on the installation, operation, and maintenance of the appliance, emphasizing safety precautions and compliance with local codes.

Function Description:

The device is a light-duty commercial electric water heater designed for heating potable water. It operates automatically once the electrical switch is closed, with thermostats preset to provide water at approximately 140°F (60°C) or below to minimize the risk of scalding. The water heater is intended for indoor installation and should not be used for purposes other than heating potable water, as this could lead to damage, hazardous conditions, and nullify the warranty.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Certification: The water heater's design is certified by INTERTEK (ETL) and listed in accordance with UL 174. It is also CETL listed in accordance with Canadian National Standard C22.2, No. 110-M90.
  • Installation Codes: Must be installed in accordance with local codes or, in their absence, the N.E.C. Reference Book (latest edition).
  • NSF Requirements: To comply with NSF, the water heater must either be sealed to the floor with sealant in a smooth, easily cleanable way, or installed with an optional leg kit providing a minimum 6" clearance beneath it.
  • Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve: A new, listed 3/4" x 3/4" temperature-pressure relief valve is mandatory. It must have a maximum set pressure not exceeding the water heater's maximum working pressure and an hourly rated temperature steam BTU discharge capacity not less than the water heater's hourly input rating. The discharge line must exit within six (6) inches (15.3 cm) above or any distance below the structural floor and not contact any live electrical part. It must allow for complete drainage and not be threaded, plugged, or capped.
  • Water Connections: Features dielectric waterway fittings with 3/4" NPT tapered male threads for cold water inlet and hot water outlet. For bottom inlet models, the cold water inlet is located on the side of the drain valve. Utility models have inlet and outlet nipples located on the side.
  • Electrical Connections: Designed for "unbalanced" three-phase delta branch circuit operation for upright and lowboy models, but can be converted to single-phase and/or simultaneous operation. Grounding is essential, with a green ground wire attached to a terminal block (or a green ground screw for 10 and 15-gallon utility models). Power leads should be connected from a fused disconnect switch according to the provided wiring diagrams (Figures 3A, 3B, 4, 4A). Wire size may need to be increased for longer runs or to comply with local codes.
  • Temperature Limiting Device: Equipped with a manual reset, trip-free type temperature limiting device that interrupts all ungrounded power supply conductors in case of thermostat failure.
  • Thermostat Preset: Factory preset to approximately 140°F (60°C) or below.
  • Anode Rod: A sacrificial anode rod (or combination anode rod/hot water outlet nipple) is installed to extend tank life.
  • Clearances: Minimum clearance to combustible material is 0 inches for the Top, Sides, Front, and Rear. However, 18 inches (45.7 cm) from the Top and 24 inches (61 cm) from the Front are recommended for servicing.

Usage Features:

  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes the flammability of hydrogen gas that can accumulate in hot water systems unused for long periods (two weeks or more), recommending opening hot water faucets for several minutes before use. Warns against storing flammable, combustible, or corrosive vapors and liquids near the appliance.
  • Thermal Expansion Control: If installed in a closed water supply system (e.g., with a back-flow preventer), provisions must be made to control thermal expansion.
  • Scald Prevention: Highlights the risk of severe burns from hot water, especially at temperatures above 125°F (52°C). Recommends installing an ASSE approved mixing valve in the water system to reduce point-of-discharge temperatures.
  • Filling the Water Heater: Detailed steps for filling the tank, including closing the drain valve, opening the cold water supply, and opening hot water faucets to release air.
  • Draining the Water Heater: Instructions for completely draining the tank, including disconnecting power, closing the cold water supply, opening the drain valve, and opening a hot water faucet to allow air entry.
  • Thermostat Adjustment: Provides instructions for adjusting the thermostat(s) to change water temperature, emphasizing the need to disconnect power before making adjustments.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: The water heater and its components should be inspected annually by a qualified service technician for damage.
  • Regular Draining: To ensure efficient operation and long tank life, the water heater should be drained at least once a month until the water runs clear, preventing lime and sediment buildup.
  • T&P Valve Check: The temperature-pressure relief valve should be checked at least once a year to ensure it has not become encrusted with lime. The lever should be lifted several times until the valve seats properly without leaking.
  • Anode Rod Inspection: The magnesium anode rod should be inspected periodically (every 2 years) and replaced when necessary to prolong tank life. Water conditions and the use of water softeners may necessitate more frequent inspections.
  • Leak Check: Bi-annually, check the seal around the heating elements for leaks.
  • Overheating Prevention: The water heater is equipped with an energy cut-out device to prevent overheating. If activated, the electrical supply should be turned off, and a qualified service technician contacted.
  • Professional Service: Strongly recommends that installation and servicing be performed by a plumbing professional. Warns against attempting to repair thermostats, heating elements, or electrical wiring without qualification.
  • Warranty: The warranty is only in effect when the water heater is installed, adjusted, and operated according to the instructions and local codes. Unauthorized modifications or failure to comply with instructions will nullify the warranty. Damage from corrosive vapors is not covered by the warranty.
