Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the assembly, installation, and maintenance of BredaBeds Murphy Beds, designed for urban and metropolitan living spaces. The manual covers various aspects from unpacking and initial setup to final adjustments and disassembly, emphasizing safety throughout the process.

Function Description:

BredaBeds Murphy Beds are space-saving furniture solutions that allow a bed to be stored vertically against a wall when not in use, freeing up floor space. The bed utilizes a spring mechanism to counterbalance the weight of the bed face panel, enabling easy opening and closing. The system is designed for residential use, offering a practical solution for small apartments, guest rooms, or multi-functional spaces. The bed cabinet is securely attached to the wall, ensuring stability and safety during operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Mattress Thickness: Designed for U.S. mattress sizes up to 11 inches thick. An adjustable headboard area (AB/BA) accommodates mattress thicknesses greater than 11 inches, up to 13 inches, by using a different cam screw hole. However, using a mattress 11 inches or under is highly recommended to minimize the gap between the wall and the mattress.
  • Assembly Time: The normal assembly time for this product ranges from 3.5 to 7 hours, varying based on individual skill levels, the bed's configuration, and external factors like floor levelness. Two people are recommended for assembly due to the weight of some parts.
  • Wall Attachment: The bed cabinet must be firmly attached to wood wall studs using 3-inch long screws from Hardware Package #10. Drywall anchors or toggle bolts into drywall only are explicitly stated as inadequate and can lead to catastrophic collapse. Wall studs are typically 1 1/2 inches wide and measure 16 inches on center (center-to-center), or in some cases, 24 inches on center.
  • Spring Mechanism: The bed uses a spring mechanism to counterbalance the bed's weight. The number of springs required varies by bed size:
    • Twin: 4 or 5 springs per side (Holes 3-6 or 3-7)
    • Twin X-Long: 5 or 6 springs per side (Holes 3-7 or 2-7)
    • Full: 6 or 7 springs per side (Holes 2-7 or 2-8)
    • Queen: 7 or 8 springs per side (Holes 2-8 or 1-8)
    • King: 9 springs per side (Holes 1-9) These are recommendations, and the actual quantity may need adjustment based on the mattress's weight and bedding.
  • Hardware: The assembly utilizes various hardware components, color-coded for easy identification:
    • White box: Hardware Package #1 (Cam Screws)
    • Brown box: Hardware Package #2 (Mechanism Hardware), Hardware Package #6 (Cams Fitting)
    • Blue outline: Hardware found inside the box "SBLM"
    • Hardware Card #4 (Leg Hardware, Frame Screws)
    • Hardware Card #5 (Mattress Strap - Optional)
    • Hardware Card #7 (Frame Screws)
    • Hardware Card #9 (Pulls & 1" Screws)
    • Hardware Package #10 (Miscellaneous, including 3" screws for wall attachment)
  • Tools Required: Cordless drill with #2 Phillips bit, 1/2" socket, Allen wrench (Hardware Pkg #2), rubber mallet, stud finder, level, 3/16" drill bit, countersink (or 3/8" drill bit), 1/2" wrench, 5/16" socket, tape measure. A power impact driver is recommended for inserting long screws into wall studs.
  • Bed Dimensions (Approximate):
    • Twin: Width 45", Height 83", Depth 16", Projection From Wall 85"
    • Twin X-Long: Width 45", Height 88", Depth 16", Projection From Wall 90"
    • Full: Width 60", Height 83", Depth 16", Projection From Wall 85"
    • Queen: Width 66", Height 88", Depth 16", Projection From Wall 90"
    • King: Width 82", Height 88", Depth 16", Projection From Wall 90"
  • Screw-Free Zone (Metropolitan Murphy Beds): A 2-inch wide area, 4 to 6 inches from each edge of the door, is designated as a screw-free zone to prevent screws from penetrating the front of the door.

Usage Features:

  • Space-Saving Design: The primary feature is the ability to fold the bed vertically, maximizing floor space when the bed is not in use.
  • Two-Person Assembly: The manual strongly recommends two people for assembly, especially when moving heavy parts, to ensure safety and ease of installation.
  • Video Instructions: QR codes and direct links (e.g., breda.us/video, breda.us/springs, breda.us/frame, breda.us/face, breda.us/remove) are provided for video tutorials to supplement the written instructions.
  • Adjustable Spring Tension: The spring mechanism's tension can be adjusted by adding or removing springs to achieve proper balance, ensuring the bed raises and lowers with approximately 10 pounds of pressure and the legs rest on the floor without lifting when open.
  • Baseboard Notch: The bed cabinet includes a baseboard notch. If the existing baseboard is larger, the notch can be customized, or the wood panels can be notched with a saw.
  • Optional Light Kit: If a wired or wireless light kit is purchased, installation instructions for the kit should be followed at the time of wall attachment.
  • Mattress Strap (Optional): A mattress strap (Hardware Card #5) can be attached to secure the mattress and bedding, though the legs and leg connector rod typically hold most mattresses in place.
  • Leg Stop Cylinder: Ensures the bed legs are properly positioned at the leg end.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Guide: A dedicated section addresses common issues such as the bed hitting the toe kick, not sitting flat against the wall, legs pulling out, the bed face panel hitting the side, and metropolitan beds poking through thin areas. Solutions range from adjusting cam screws and spring tension to contacting BredaBeds for specific remedies.
  • Spring Mechanism Lubrication: If the bed squeaks during rotation, the pivot points can be lubricated with WD-40 or silicone spray. Opening and closing the bed several times after spraying helps work in the lubricant.
  • Damage Reporting: In case of damaged parts, customers are instructed to email service@bredabeds.com with pictures, part names, order number, and additional information. Remake parts are prioritized. A touch-up crayon (Hardware Package #10) is provided for minor chips.
  • Extra Hardware: It is normal to have extra hardware leftover after assembly, which can be discarded.
  • Label Removal: EZ peel-off labels can be removed from all parts after assembly, except for the warning label on the "Bed Cabinet Top Nailer," which contains important safety information for disassembly.
  • Cleaning: Parts can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
  • Disassembly Instructions: Chapter 8 provides detailed steps for disassembling the bed for moving, emphasizing the critical step of removing the bed face panel before unscrewing the bed cabinet from the wall.
  • Warranty Policy: BredaBeds offers a warranty on mechanical hardware for ten years, wood parts for one year, and electronics (lights) for ninety days from the date of purchase. The warranty covers material or workmanship defects under proper installation and does not cover damage from improper use, abuse, neglect, misunderstanding of operation, or improper assembly, nor issues with springs or pistons. It is non-transferable and applies to the original purchaser.
  • Return Policy: Returns are accepted within 30 days of receipt, subject to a 20% restocking fee. Return shipping and repackaging costs are the customer's responsibility. Credit is issued within 3 business days after inspection. A return authorization is required before returning any product.
  • Customer Support: Contact information (phone: 1-855-466-4781, email: service@bredabeds.com, live chat: https://bredabeds.com) is provided for any questions or issues.
