Overview

The Breville Grind Control™ BDC650 is a sophisticated drip coffee maker that integrates an adjustable burr grinder, offering a comprehensive solution for brewing fresh coffee from whole beans. Designed for both single-cup and carafe brewing, it prioritizes flavor and aroma by grinding beans just before brewing.

Function Description:

The core function of the Breville Grind Control™ is to brew coffee, either a single cup or a full carafe, from freshly ground or pre-ground coffee. It features an integrated adjustable burr grinder with machined stainless steel burrs, allowing users to select from six grind settings to optimize flavor balance. The grinder can be turned off when using pre-ground coffee. A unique calibration mode enables users to adjust the amount of coffee delivered for any strength or cup size setting, accommodating different bean origins, age, and roast levels to achieve desired flavor profiles. The machine includes a 12-Cup (60oz) Water Tank with a flip-top lid for easy front-access filling, and a 'MAX' level float to indicate when the tank is full. An intuitive control panel with a backlit LCD screen simplifies operation, displaying current settings and brewing status. The coffee grinds chute delivers ground coffee to the coffee basket, and a removable grinds catcher collects loose grinds. For brewing, it uses either a removable gold tone filter or paper filters, held within a removable coffee basket. A soft-opening, swing-out door with a safety interlock system prevents operation if the coffee basket is not correctly assembled or the door is not properly closed. The machine also incorporates a Steam Baffle to divert water overflow if the coffee basket becomes blocked, and a Brew Pause Drip Stop to temporarily cease coffee flow when the carafe is removed for mid-brew pouring.

Usage Features:

The Breville Grind Control™ offers flexible brewing options. Users can choose between "cup" mode for single servings or travel mugs, and "carafe" mode for 2 to 12 cups. The carafe is a 12-Cup double-wall, stainless steel thermal carafe designed to keep coffee hot. The machine encourages the use of freshly roasted whole bean coffee, recommending grinding right before brewing for maximum flavor. Grind adjustment is made via a knob accessible through the bean hopper lid, with settings from 1 (weakest) to 8 (strongest). For pre-ground coffee, a specific setting disables the grinder. The LCD screen displays various statuses, including "PRE-HEATING," "INFUSING," and "BREWING," along with a countdown timer. The "OPEN" button allows access to the swing-out door for basket management. The "MENU | EXIT" button provides access to settings like clock adjustment, alert volumes, machine reset, and calibration mode, and can be held for 2 seconds to enter standby mode. The "CUP | CARAFE" button toggles between brewing modes and adjusts cup/carafe volume. The "STRENGTH" button (a dial) selects strength settings or the pre-ground option. An "Auto Start" feature allows users to program a specific time for the machine to automatically begin grinding and brewing. The "START | CANCEL" button initiates or stops the brew cycle. For taller cups and travel mugs, the drip tray can be removed. The machine provides visual and auditory cues, such as beeps when the water tank is full or when the brewing cycle is complete. It also displays reminders like "EMPTY COFFEE FILTER" to prompt users to discard used grinds. The volume of the "Ready" signal can be adjusted to "HI," "LO," or "OFF."

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and taste. All parts that come into contact with coffee and water are BPA Free. The exterior stainless steel housing can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth. The bean hopper and lid, coffee basket, gold tone filter, and carafe should be washed in warm, soapy water and dried thoroughly. A cleaning brush is provided for cleaning the grinding burrs and coffee grinds chute. The bean hopper is easily removable by turning a locking knob counter-clockwise, facilitating cleaning and storage of beans. The coffee grinds chute rotates to an open position for cleaning, and users are advised to regularly check and wipe clean the stainless steel disc in the chute to prevent grind build-up. The LCD screen will display "CLEAN COFFEE CHUTE" when cleaning is recommended, typically every 2-3 weeks depending on usage. The grinds catcher and the two-part drip tray are also removable for washing. Calcium build-up (scale) from water minerals can affect performance and coffee quality, so the machine includes a "DESC" function for descaling. Breville recommends descaling once a month in soft water environments and more frequently in hard water areas, using white vinegar or a household descaling agent. The descaling process involves specific steps for emptying and refilling the water tank with the descaling solution, and cannot be stopped mid-cycle without unplugging the cord. After descaling, the machine requires a rinse cycle. The manual also provides troubleshooting tips for common issues like "LOCK BEAN HOPPER" or "EMPTY COFFEE FILTER" messages, coffee grinds in coffee, coffee basket overflows, and loud grinder operation, often directing users to cleaning procedures.
