Overview

The Brinly 38" Box Scraper (Model BS-381) is a versatile garden tractor attachment designed for various landscaping and ground-leveling tasks. It is specifically engineered for use with garden tractors equipped with a sleeve hitch, and for optimal performance, the use of tire chains and wheel weights on the tractor is recommended. This implement is built to offer dependability and performance in managing loose materials, grading, and preparing surfaces.

Function Description

The primary function of the Brinly Box Scraper is to manipulate and move loose materials such as dirt, gravel, and snow. It excels at leveling uneven terrain, spreading piles of material, filling small holes, and general cleanup. The core of its operation lies in its 38-inch blade, which can be configured for different tasks.

When used as a Box Scraper and Scarifier, the unit is ideal for breaking up hard-packed surfaces and then leveling them. The scarifier bar, with its downward-pointing teeth, is designed to penetrate and loosen compacted soil or gravel, making it easier for the blade to then grade and smooth the surface. This configuration is particularly useful for preparing seedbeds, driveways, or other areas requiring a finely graded finish. The box-like structure helps to contain and carry material, allowing for efficient distribution across the working area. The implement is not recommended for use in reverse gear when operating in this mode.

The unit can also be converted into a Rear Blade by removing the scarifier and side plates. In this configuration, the blade becomes a simpler tool for pushing and spreading material. The angling lever allows the operator to adjust the blade to various angles (left and right), providing flexibility for different tasks such such as back-filling trenches, light snow removal, or simply pushing debris. For tasks requiring the blade to operate in reverse, the angling lever can be used to rotate the blade 180 degrees and lock it into the desired position. This adaptability makes the box scraper a multi-purpose tool for year-round property maintenance.

Usage Features

The Brinly Box Scraper is designed with several features to enhance its usability and effectiveness:

  • Sleeve Hitch Compatibility: The attachment connects to a garden tractor via a sleeve hitch, ensuring broad compatibility with many existing garden tractor models. The hitch assembly includes stabilizer bolts that need to be tightened against the yoke of the box scraper to prevent side sway during operation, ensuring stable and precise control.
  • Adjustable Angling Lever: A key feature is the angling lever, which allows the operator to easily change the angle of the blade. This adjustability is crucial for directing material flow, whether for creating windrows, spreading evenly, or pushing material to one side. The lever can be locked into various positions, providing flexibility for different tasks and terrains.
  • Scarifier Bar: The removable scarifier bar is a significant asset for breaking up compacted surfaces. Its teeth point downwards and forward, allowing it to effectively loosen hard soil or gravel before the blade smooths it out. This feature enhances the scraper's ability to tackle challenging ground conditions.
  • Side Plates: The side plates, when attached, create a box-like structure that helps to contain and carry material, making the box scraper efficient for leveling and spreading. These plates are removable, allowing for conversion to a rear blade configuration.
  • Weight Mount Brackets: The unit includes weight mount brackets and a weight support bracket, providing the option to add extra weight (e.g., concrete or patio blocks) to the implement. This additional weight increases the blade's downward pressure, improving its ability to penetrate and move heavier or more compacted materials. Tie-downs can be used through holes in the tray flanges to secure any added weight.
  • Operating Depth Adjustment: The operating depth of the box scraper can be set to allow the blade to go below ground level while maintaining a 5-inch transport height when the hitch is raised. This adjustment is critical for achieving the desired grading depth and for safe transport.
  • Blade Reversibility: The blade itself can be rotated 180 degrees for use in reverse gear when operating as a rear blade, offering flexibility in how material is pushed or spread.
  • Loose Material Handling: The design allows for efficient handling of loose material, with the box scraper configuration helping to deposit material into low areas as it moves across the surface.
  • Speed Control: The manual emphasizes that the tractor speed should be governed by the task at hand, especially when leveling or grading, to avoid cutting excessive amounts of hard-packed material at once.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and continued performance of the Brinly Box Scraper. The manual outlines several key maintenance practices:

  • Blade Edge Rotation: The blade edge is designed to wear over time. Once it has worn considerably, it can be rotated (from bottom to top) to provide a fresh cutting edge. This extends the life of the blade and maintains its effectiveness. The process involves removing four 3/8" carriage bolts, rotating the blade, and reassembling it.
  • Lubrication: All pivoting points and the hitch pin should be lubricated with a drop or two of 30-weight oil before each operation. This helps to ensure smooth movement and prevents wear on critical components.
  • Hardware Tightness Check: It is crucial to frequently check (at least every 8 hours of use) that all bolts and nuts are tight. Vibrations during operation can loosen hardware, and ensuring everything is secure prevents parts from falling off or becoming damaged.
  • Cleaning and Painting: When the unit is not in use, it should be cleaned of all dirt, scale, and rust. Any areas where paint has chipped or worn should be touched up with paint to prevent corrosion.
  • Rust Prevention: A coat of grease, oil, or rust preventative should be applied to the blade edge, scarifier, and any other areas that show signs of "scouring" from operation. This protects these critical surfaces from rust and extends their lifespan.
  • Storage: The box scraper should always be stored in a dry place to protect it from the elements and prevent rust or other damage.

The Brinly Box Scraper is a robust and adaptable tool, designed to simplify various ground-engaging tasks for property owners. Its thoughtful design, combined with straightforward maintenance guidelines, ensures it remains a valuable asset for landscaping and property management.
