Installation Instructions
NOTE: Read the entire instruction manual before starting the
installation.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, maintenance,
or use can cause explosion, fire, electrical shock, or other
conditions which may cause death, personal injury, or property
damage. Consult a qualified installer, service agency, or your
distributor or branch for information o r assistance. The qualified
installer or agency must use factory–authorized kits or accessories
when modifying this product. Refer to the individual instructions
packaged with the kits or accessories when installing.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses, protective clothing,
and work gloves. Use quenching cloth for brazing operations.
Have fire extinguisher available. Read these instructions
thoroughly and follow all warnings or cautions included in
literature and attached to the unit. Consult local building codes and
current editions of the National Electrical Code (NEC) NFPA 70.
In Canada, refer to current editions of the Canadian electrical code
CSA 22.1.

When you see this symbol on the unit and in instructions or
manuals, be alert to the potential for personal injury.
Understand these signal words; DANGER, WARNING, and
CAUTION. These words are used with the safety–alert symbol.
DANGER identifies the mo st serious hazards which will result in

Before installing, modifying, or servicing system, main
electrical disconnect switch must be in the OFF position.

WARNING
INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS
NOTE: In some cases noise in the living area has been traced to
gas pulsations from improper installation of equipment.
1. Locate unit away from windows, patios, decks, etc. where
unit operation sound may disturb customer.
2. Ensure that vapor and liquid tube diameters are appropriate
for unit capacity.
3. Run refrigerant tubes as directly as possible b y avoiding un-
necessary turns and bends.
4. Leave some slack between structure and unit to absorb vi-
bration.
5. When passing refrigerant tubes through the wall, seal open-
ing with RTV or other pliable silicon–based caulk (see Fig.
1).
6. Avoid direct tubing contact with water pipes, duct work,
floor joists, wall studs, floors, and walls.
7. Do not suspend refrigerant tubing from joists and studs with
a rigid wire or strap which comes in direct contact with
tubing (see Fig. 1).
8. Ensure that tubing insulation is pliable and completely sur-
rounds vapor tube.
9. When necessary, use hanger straps which are 1 in. wide and
conform to shape of tubing insulation (see Fig. 1).
10. Isolate hanger straps from insulation by using metal sleeves
bent to conform to shape of insulation.

When outdoor unit is connected to factory–approved indoor unit,
outdoor unit contains system refrigerant charge for operation with
AHRI rated indoor unit when connected by 15 ft. (4.57 m) of
field–supplied or factory accessory tubing. For proper unit
operation, check refrigerant charge using charging information
located on control box cover and/or in the Check Charge section of
this instruction.
IMPORTANT: Maximum liquid–line size is 3/8–in. OD for all
residential applications including long line.
IMPORTANT: Always install the factory–supplied liquid–line
filter drier . Obtain replacement filter driers from your distributor or
branch.

Overview

This document describes the installation and maintenance of Bryant BH14NB and BH16NA Single-Stage Split System Heat Pumps with Puron® Refrigerant, ranging from 1-1/2 to 5 nominal tons.

Function Description:

The Bryant BH14NB and BH16NA are single-stage split system heat pumps designed for residential heating and cooling applications. They utilize Puron® refrigerant (R-410A) and are intended for connection to factory-approved indoor units. The system includes an outdoor unit, an indoor unit (such as a fan coil or furnace), and refrigerant tubing to connect them. The heat pump operates in both cooling and heating modes, with a defrost control system to manage frost accumulation on the outdoor coil during heating.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Nominal Tonnage: 1-1/2 to 5 nominal tons.
  • Refrigerant: Puron® (R-410A). Puron refrigerant operates at 50-70 percent higher pressures than R-22.
  • Refrigerant Cylinders: Rose colored, with a service pressure rating of 400 psig (DOT 4BA400 or DOT BW400).
  • Manifold Sets: Required to be 700 psig high side and 180 psig low side with 550 psig low-side retard.
  • Hoses: Must have a 700 psig service pressure rating.
  • Filter Driers: Factory-supplied liquid-line filter drier is required on every unit. Do not use liquid-line filter driers with rated working pressures less than 600 psig. Suction-line filter driers should not be installed in the liquid line or left in line longer than 72 hours.
  • Piston Metering Device: Units with indoor pistons require a specific piston size, which must match the unit rating plate. If equipped with an R-22 TXV or piston metering device sized for R-22, it must be changed to a hard shutoff Puron TXV.
  • Outdoor Operating Ambient: Minimum 55°F (12.78°C) in cooling mode (without accessory), maximum 125°F (51.67°C) in cooling mode. Maximum 66°F (18.89°C) in heating mode.
  • Tubing Lengths: Factory charged for 15 ft (4.57 m) of lineset. For lengths between 80 and 200 ft (24.38 and 60.96 m) horizontally or 20 ft (6.09 m) vertically, refer to the Residential Piping and Longline Guideline.
  • Liquid-Line Size: Maximum 3/8-in. OD for all residential applications, including long line.
  • Electrical Wiring: No. 18 AWG color-coded, insulated (35°C minimum) wire for control wiring. For runs over 100 ft (30.5 m), use No. 16 AWG. All wiring must be NEC Class 2 and separated from incoming power leads.
  • Transformer: Furnace, fan coil, or accessory transformer for control power, 24v/40va minimum.
  • Clearances: 24 in. (609.6 mm) to service end, 48 in. (1219.2 mm) above unit. 6 in. (152.4 mm) on one side, 12 in. (304.8 mm) on all remaining sides. 18 in. (457.2 mm) for units with wire grille coil guard; 24 in. (609.6 mm) for units with louver panels. Unit must be at least 6 in. above roof surface for rooftop applications.
  • Defrost Control: Time/temperature control with field-selectable time periods (30, 60, or 90 minutes), factory set to 60 or 90 minutes.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Location: Locate unit away from windows, patios, and decks to minimize noise disturbance.
  • Mounting: Install on a solid, level mounting pad, ensuring it is level to within ±2° (±3/8 in/ft, ±9.5 mm/m). For rooftop applications, mount on a level platform or frame, above a load-bearing wall, and at least 6 inches above the roof surface.
  • Refrigerant Tubing: Run as directly as possible, avoiding unnecessary turns and bends. Leave slack for vibration absorption. Seal wall openings with RTV or pliable silicon-based caulk. Avoid direct contact with water pipes, duct work, floor joists, wall studs, floors, and walls. Use 1-inch wide hanger straps conforming to insulation shape, isolated from insulation by metal sleeves.
  • Brazing: Use Sil-Fos or Phos-copper alloy. Wrap service valves with a wet cloth or heat-sinking material to prevent overheating and damage. Remove valve cores from Schrader ports on service valves before brazing.
  • Evacuation: Evacuate refrigerant tubes and indoor coil to 500 microns using the deep vacuum method. Never use the system compressor as a vacuum pump.
  • Charging: Units are factory charged for 15 ft of lineset. Adjust charge by adding or removing 0.6 oz/ft (0.018 kg/m) of 3/8 liquid line above or below 15 ft. For TXV systems, use the subcooling method. For piston systems, use the superheat method. Favorable conditions for charging exist when outdoor temperature is 70-100°F (21.11-37.78°C) and indoor temperature is 70-80°F (21.11-26.67°C).
  • Electrical Connections: Ensure field wiring complies with local and national codes. Connect ground wire to the control box. Route 24v control wires through the grommet and connect leads to control wiring.
  • Crankcase Heater: If equipped, furnish power to the heater a minimum of 24 hours before starting the unit, especially if tubing is longer than 80 ft (24.38 m) or the outdoor unit is 20 ft (6.10 m) below the indoor unit.
  • Start-Up: After evacuation, fully open liquid and vapor service valves. Replace stem caps after opening to refrigerant flow. Close electrical disconnects to energize the system. Set the thermostat to desired temperature and mode (HEAT or COOL, ON or AUTO fan) and operate for 15 minutes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Periodic Maintenance: Regular maintenance is required for continuing high performance and minimizing equipment failure. Frequency may vary based on geographic areas (e.g., coastal applications). Refer to the User's Manual for detailed information.
  • Final Checks (Post-Installation):
    • Ensure all wiring is routed away from tubing and sheet metal edges to prevent rub-through or pinching.
    • Verify all wiring and tubing are secure in the unit before adding panels and covers.
    • Tighten service valve stem caps to 1/12-turn past finger tight.
    • Leave the Owner's Manual with the owner and explain system operation and periodic maintenance requirements.
    • Fill out the Dealer Installation Checklist and place it in the customer file.
  • Refrigerant Recovery: Federal regulations require refrigerant recovery during system repair or final unit disposal. Never vent refrigerant to the atmosphere.
  • System Opening: When the system must be opened for service, recover refrigerant, evacuate, then break the vacuum with dry nitrogen, and replace filter driers. Evacuate to 500 microns prior to recharging.
  • POE Oils: POE oils absorb moisture rapidly and can damage certain plastics and roofing materials. Do not expose oil to the atmosphere.
  • Defrost Thermostat Check: Ensure the defrost thermostat is properly located and securely attached to the stub tube on the liquid header.
  • Filter Drier Replacement: Obtain replacement filter driers from your distributor or branch.
