SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service, maintenance,
or use can cause explosion, fire, electrical shock, or other
conditions which may cause death, personal injury, or property
damage. Consult a qualified installer, service agency, or your
distributor or branch for information or assistance. The qualified
installer or agency must use factory--authorized kits or accessories
when modifying this product. Refer to the individual instructions
packaged with the kits or accessories when installing.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses, protective clothing,
and work gloves. Use quenching cloth for brazing operations.
Have fire extinguisher available. Read these instructions
thoroughly and follow all warnings or cautions included in
literature and attached to the unit. Consult local building codes and
current editions of the National Electrical Code ( NEC ) NFPA 70.
In Canada, refer to current editions of the Canadian electrical code
CSA 22.1.
Recognize safety information. This is the safety--alert symbol

When you see this symbol on the unit and in instructions or
manuals, be alert to the potential for personal injury. Understand
these signal words; DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION. These
words are used with the safety--alert symbol. DANGER identifies
the most serious hazards which will result in severe personal injury
or death. WARNING signifies hazards which could result in
personal injury or death. CAUTION is used to identify unsafe
practices which would result in minor personal injury or product
and property damage. NOTE is used to highlight suggestions
which will result in enhanced installation, reliability, or operation.

Before installing, modifying, or servicing system, main
electrical disconnect switch must be in the OFF position and
install a lockout tag. There may be more than 1 disconnect
switch. Lock out and tag switch with a suitable warning label.
CUT HAZARD
Failure to follow this caution may result in personal injury.
Sheet metal parts may have sharp edges or burrs. Use care and
wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves when
handling parts.

INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS
NOTE: In some cases noise in the living area has been traced to
gas pulsations from improper installation of equipment.
1. Locate unit away from windows, patios, decks, etc. where
unit operation sound may disturb customer.
2. Ensure that vapor and liquid tube diameters are appropriate
for unit capacity.
3. Run refrigerant tubes as directly as possible by avoiding un-
necessary turns and bends.
4. Leave some slack between structure and unit to absorb vi-
bration.
5. When passing refrigerant tubes through the wall, seal open-
ing with RTV or other pliable silicon--based caulk. (See Fig.
1.)
6. Avoid direct tubing contact with water pipes, duct work,
floor joists, wall studs, floors, and walls.
7. Do not suspend refrigerant tubing from joists and studs with
a rigid wire or strap which comes in direct contact with
tubing.(See Fig. 1.)
8. Ensure that tubing insulation is pliable and completely sur-
rounds vapor tube.
9. When necessary, use hanger straps which are 1 in. wide and
conform to shape of tubing insulation. (See Fig. 1.)
10. Isolate hanger straps from insulation by using metal sleeves
bent to conform to shape of insulation.
When outdoor unit is connected to factory--approved indoor unit,
outdoor unit contains system refrigerant charge for operation with
AHRI rated indoor unit when connected by 15 ft. (4.57 m) of
field--supplied or factory accessory tubing. For proper unit
operation, check refrigerant charge using charging information
located on control box cover and/or in the Check Charge section of
this instruction.
IMPORTANT: Maximum liquid--line size is 3/8--in. OD for all
residential applications including long line applications.
IMPORTANT: Always install the factory--supplied liquid--line
filter drier. Obtain replacement filter driers from your distributor or
branch.

Overview

This document describes the Bryant Evolution Series 2-Stage Heat Pump with Puron Refrigerant, specifically models 286B (2-5 tons) and 289B (3-ton Trophy). It provides detailed instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety and optimal performance.

Function Description:

The Evolution Series heat pump is a two-stage system designed for both heating and cooling applications, utilizing Puron (R-410A) refrigerant. It offers modulated capacity, operating at full capacity or approximately 67% capacity, to meet varying heating and cooling demands. The system can be controlled by either a Bryant Evolution User Interface (communicating) or a standard 2-stage thermostat (non-communicating). Key functions include compressor operation, outdoor fan motor control, reversing valve operation, defrost cycles, low ambient cooling, crankcase heater operation, compressor external protection, pressure switch monitoring, and various time delays.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: 286B (2-5 tons), 289B (3-ton Trophy)
  • Refrigerant: Puron (R-410A). Operates at 50-70% higher pressures than R-22.
  • Refrigerant Charge: Factory charged for 15 ft (4.57 m) of lineset. Adjustment required for different line lengths (0.6 oz/ft or 17.74 g/m for 3/8 liquid line).
  • Liquid-Line Size: Maximum 3/8-in. OD for all residential applications.
  • Operating Ambient (Cooling): Minimum 55°F (12.78°C) without low ambient cooling enabled; maximum 125°F (51.67°C). With Evolution control, low ambient cooling is possible down to 0°F (-17.78°C).
  • Operating Ambient (Heating): Maximum 66°F (18.89°C) on all models.
  • Compressor: Two-stage scroll compressor with an internal unloading mechanism. Modulates between full and approximately 67% capacity. Starts unloaded and stays unloaded for 5 seconds.
  • Outdoor Fan Motor: PSC type on 286B models; ECM type on 289B models. ECM motor RPM adjusts to outdoor conditions based on PWM output (e.g., 9.06 DC volts for low-stage at OAT ≤ 104°F/40°C, 11.90 DC volts for OAT > 104°F/40°C).
  • Electrical: Requires 24v/40va minimum control power. Line voltage must be within limits shown on unit rating plate. Minimum 187v for compressor and fan operation.
  • Defrost Intervals: Selectable (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, or AUTO) via dip switches or Evolution Control. AUTO defrost adjusts based on previous defrost time.
  • Thermistors: Outdoor Air Temperature (OAT) and Outdoor Coil Temperature (OCT) sensors.
  • Safety Features: Internal Pressure Relief (IPR) for compressor, high and low-pressure switches, brown-out protection (line voltage < 187v), compressor voltage sensing, contactor shorted detection, 230V line (power disconnect) detection.

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Compatibility: Works with Evolution User Interface (communicating) or standard 2-stage thermostats (non-communicating).
  • Airflow Control:
    • Evolution Control: Airflow is automatically selected based on equipment size.
    • ECM Furnaces (non-communicating): Blower operation matches compressor capacities. Airflows for high and low stage cooling are selected via taps on the furnace control board.
    • FV4C Fan Coils (non-communicating): Utilizes an Easy Select control board for airflow selection, with adjustable blower off delay.
  • Low Ambient Cooling: Possible down to 0°F (-17.78°C) with Evolution control, without an additional kit. Fan cycling is based on coil and outdoor air temperature.
  • Quiet Shift: Field-selectable defrost mode that minimizes noise during defrost and heating cycle restarts. When activated, the compressor turns off for 30 seconds, then restarts, and the fan turns off for 40 seconds after defrost.
  • Long-Line Applications: Requires a liquid-line solenoid valve (LSV) kit (KHALS0401LLS) for refrigerant piping arrangements with equivalent lengths greater than 80 ft (24.38 m) or elevation differences greater than ±20 ft (±6.10 m).
  • Forced Defrost: Can be initiated manually (non-communicating) or via the User Interface (communicating).
  • Brown-Out Protection Defeat: Can be disabled for severe noisy power conditions via the User Interface or forced defrost pins.
  • Time Delays: Includes 5-minute delays for cooling/heating start-up and compressor re-cycle, 2-minute delay for standby, 1-minute outdoor fan delay after cooling, 15-second delay for auxiliary heat after defrost, and 20-second delay for outdoor fan after defrost.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Drier: A factory-supplied liquid-line filter drier is required on every unit and must be installed indoors. Replacement filter driers should be obtained from a distributor.
  • Refrigerant Charging: System charge should be checked and adjusted using the subcooling method under favorable outdoor and indoor temperature conditions (70-100°F outdoor, 70-80°F indoor). For heating, refer to the Heat Pump Charging Instructions label on the outdoor unit.
  • Evacuation: Refrigerant tubing and indoor coil must be evacuated using the deep vacuum method (500 microns) or the alternate triple evacuation method. Always break a vacuum with dry nitrogen.
  • Leak Testing: After brazing connections, the refrigerant tubing and indoor coil are ready for leak testing.
  • Wiring Checks: Ensure all wiring is routed away from tubing and sheet metal, secured properly, and complies with local and national codes.
  • Crankcase Heater: Furnish power to the crankcase heater a minimum of 24 hours before starting the unit.
  • Status Codes: An amber STATUS light on the outdoor board flashes codes (short and long flashes) to indicate operational modes and fault conditions, aiding in troubleshooting.
  • Model Plug: Each control board has a model plug that identifies the unit type and size. It must be correctly installed for proper operation.
