Overview

This document describes the Bryant Plus 95S - Model 355CAV, a direct vent, 4-way multipoise, modulating condensing gas furnace with Perfect Sense® Perfect Humidity™. This owner's manual provides comprehensive information on the furnace's function, usage, and maintenance to ensure safe, efficient, and dependable operation.

Function Description:

The Bryant Plus 95S is a high-efficiency gas-fired furnace designed for home heating. It utilizes a revolutionary design with two heat exchangers to maximize heat extraction from consumed fuel. This results in up to 95% heating efficiency, a significant increase over conventional furnaces. The furnace employs an automatic, hot surface ignition system to light the burners each time the thermostat signals for heat, eliminating the need for a continuously burning pilot flame and saving energy. The modulating condensing technology allows the furnace to adjust its heat output based on demand, providing consistent comfort and optimal energy use. The "Perfect Sense® Perfect Humidity™" feature suggests advanced humidity control capabilities, contributing to a more comfortable indoor environment.

Key components contributing to its function include:

  • Combustion-air intake connection: Ensures contaminant-free air for combustion.
  • Burner assembly: Features energy-saving inshot burners and a hot surface igniter for safe and dependable heating.
  • Redundant gas valve: Provides safe and efficient gas control with internal shutoff and throttling valves.
  • Vent outlet: Uses PVC pipe to carry flue gas safely from the combustion system.
  • Inducer motor: Pulls hot flue gases through the heat exchangers, maintaining negative pressure for added safety.
  • Heavy-duty blower: Circulates air across the heat exchangers to transfer heat into the home.
  • Everlastic™ Secondary condensing heat exchanger: Wrings out additional heat through condensation, constructed with polypropylene-laminated steel for durability.
  • Primary serpentine heat exchanger: Features an S-shaped heat-flow design and corrosion-resistant aluminized steel for reliability.
  • Pressure switches: Ensure adequate flue gas flow through the furnace and vent system.
  • Rollout switch (manual reset): Prevents overtemperature conditions.
  • Condensate drain connection: Collects moisture condensed from burned gases for disposal into the home drain system.
  • Furnace control board: Manages furnace operation, includes a 3-amp fuse for electrical protection, and a Light Emitting Diode (LED) for status codes, aiding in diagnosis and service.
  • Transformer (24v): Provides low-voltage power to the furnace control board and thermostat.

Usage Features:

The furnace is designed for user convenience and safety.

  • Thermostat Control: Users can set their desired room temperature using a room thermostat. The furnace will automatically switch on when the room temperature drops below the set point and switch off when the desired temperature is reached.
  • Continuous Fan Operation: Some thermostats offer a "FAN" mode with "AUTO" and "ON" selections. In "AUTO" mode, the blower cycles on and off with heating cycles. In "ON" mode, the blower runs continuously, helping to maintain a more evenly balanced temperature and continuously filter indoor air.
  • Fan On Plus™: This unique feature allows users to increase or decrease blower speed as desired, accommodating seasonal changes or large gatherings. This adjustment can be made by cycling the FAN setting from ON to OFF for 1 to 3 seconds (or AUTO, depending on the thermostat), and then returning to ON. The blower will then switch to the next higher speed, with at least three speeds available.
  • Evolution Control: If equipped with an Evolution Control, fan speed can be changed by simply pushing the "fan" button.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes critical safety warnings regarding fire, explosion, carbon monoxide poisoning, and electrical shock. Users are instructed on what to do if they smell gas, the importance of not storing combustible materials near the furnace, and the need for proper airflow for combustion and ventilation.
  • Diagnostic LED: The furnace control board includes an LED that displays status codes, which can assist homeowners, installers, or service technicians in diagnosing operational issues. This LED is visible through a view port in the blower access panel after removing the main furnace door.

Maintenance Features:

Routine maintenance is crucial for the furnace's economic and dependable operation. While basic maintenance can be performed by the homeowner, other operations require trained and qualified service personnel.

  • Air Filter Maintenance: The air filter should be checked every 3 or 4 weeks and cleaned or replaced if necessary. Operating the furnace without a filter or with a dirty filter can lead to reduced airflow, damage to the blower motor, loss of efficiency, and potential lockout due to safety controls. The manual provides detailed instructions for locating, removing, cleaning (for washable filters), and reinstalling the air filter, including specific steps for filters located in the blower compartment or a dedicated filter cabinet. It also specifies that factory-supplied disposable media filters should be replaced annually or before each heating and cooling season, not cleaned.
  • Combustion Area and Vent System Inspection: Before each heating season, users should visually inspect the combustion area and vent system for cracks, sags, obstructions, dirt, rust, or soot. Blockages or accumulations can lead to loss of efficiency, improper performance, and loud "firing out of normal sequence" sounds. If dirt, rust, soot, or scale is found, or if burner flames are not clear blue, a dealer should be called. The manual provides steps to access the burner enclosure for inspection.
  • Winterization Procedures: For furnaces installed in unconditioned spaces where temperatures may drop to 32°F (0°C) or lower, winterization is necessary to prevent freeze damage, as the condensing heat exchanger accumulates water. The process involves turning off electrical and gas supplies, removing the upper inducer housing drain connection cap, connecting a field-supplied tube and funnel, and pouring propylene glycol (RV/swimming pool antifreeze or equivalent) into the system. It explicitly warns against using ethylene glycol.
  • Annual Professional Check-up: Bryant recommends an annual professional check-up by a trained service specialist to maintain performance and prevent future problems. A detailed checklist is provided for this service, covering inspections of flue gas passages, burners, heat exchangers, inducer assembly, piping, gas pipes, blower motor and wheel, air filters, ducts, electrical wiring, condensate drain system, furnace support, and overall condition.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a "BEFORE YOU REQUEST A SERVICE CALL" section, offering a checklist for common issues like insufficient airflow or furnace failure to operate. This allows homeowners to perform basic troubleshooting steps before contacting a service agency, potentially saving a service call. These steps include checking the thermostat settings, circuit breakers, gas valve position, and the manual reset flame rollout switch.

The manual emphasizes the importance of following all safety rules and instructions to minimize the possibility of serious personal injury, fire, furnace damage, or improper operation. It also advises retaining all manuals for future reference and recording installation information for easy access when service is needed.
