System Design Summary

Overview

The device is a Bryant Preferred™ Series 2-Stage Heat Pump, Model 226A, designed for use with Puron® refrigerant. It is an outdoor-mounted, air-cooled, split-system heat pump unit suitable for ground or rooftop installation, available in 2 to 5 nominal tons.

Function Description

This heat pump unit is designed to provide both heating and cooling for residential and commercial applications. It operates as a 2-stage system, allowing for more precise temperature control and enhanced energy efficiency compared to single-stage systems. The use of Puron® refrigerant, an environmentally sound option, ensures that the unit does not deplete the ozone layer, aligning with responsible environmental practices. The system is engineered to meet Energy Star® criteria for energy efficiency when matched with appropriate coil components, contributing to lower operating costs.

The unit consists of a hermetic 2-stage scroll compressor, an air-cooled coil, a forward-swept blade propeller-type condenser fan, and a control box. It discharges supply air upward. The refrigeration circuit includes essential components such as liquid-line and vapor-line back-seating shutoff valves with sweat connections, POE compressor oil, an accumulator, and a reversing valve. A filter drier, high-pressure switch, and loss-of-charge switch are also integrated for system protection and reliability. The 2-stage scroll compressor, combined with internal pressure relief and thermal overload protection, ensures robust and consistent performance.

Usage Features

The 226A heat pump offers a range of features aimed at enhancing comfort, reliability, and durability. For comfort, the system supports both Thermidistat™ and standard 2-stage thermostat controls, allowing for flexible and precise management of indoor temperature and humidity. Indoor air quality accessories are also available, providing options for improved air quality within the conditioned space.

In terms of reliability, the Puron® refrigerant not only offers environmental benefits but also contributes to lower lifetime service costs. Front-seating service valves simplify maintenance and service procedures. The balanced refrigeration system is designed for maximum reliability, ensuring consistent operation over time.

Durability is a key aspect of this unit, featuring a DuraGuard Plus™ protection package. This includes solid, durable sheet metal construction, a steel louver coil guard to protect the coil from external damage, and a baked-on, complete outer coverage powder paint finish that provides enhanced corrosion resistance. These features ensure the unit can withstand various environmental conditions and maintain its aesthetic appeal.

The unit is capable of long-line applications, supporting total equivalent lengths up to 250 feet (76.2 m). It can accommodate condenser above evaporator installations up to 200 feet (60.96 m) and evaporator above condenser installations up to 80 feet (24.38 m), offering flexibility in installation configurations. However, specific guidelines in the Longline Guide should be consulted for detailed information on these applications.

The condenser fan motors are totally enclosed, 1-phase type with class B insulation and permanently lubricated, ensuring long-term, quiet operation. The fan shafts are corrosion resistant, and the fan blades are statically and dynamically balanced for smooth performance. Condenser fan openings are equipped with coated steel wire safety guards for protection.

Maintenance Features

The design of the 226A heat pump incorporates several features that contribute to ease of maintenance and longevity. The front-seating service valves are a significant advantage, simplifying the process of servicing the refrigeration circuit. The inclusion of a filter drier is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and efficiency of the refrigerant system by removing moisture and contaminants.

The compressor is hermetically sealed and mounted on rubber vibration isolators to minimize noise and wear. It is also covered with a sound-absorbing blanket, which further reduces operational noise and provides a degree of protection.

The condenser coil is constructed with aluminum fins mechanically bonded to copper tubes, which are cleaned, dehydrated, and sealed at the factory. This construction helps maintain coil integrity and performance over time.

For long-line applications, accessories may be required to maintain acceptable refrigerant management and system reliability. These accessories, such as a liquid-line solenoid valve and crankcase heater, help prevent refrigerant migration and ensure proper lubrication of the compressor, especially in systems with significant line lengths or vertical separation.

The unit is constructed in an ISO9001 approved facility, ensuring high manufacturing standards. All factory wiring, piping, controls, and the refrigerant charge are contained within the unit enclosure, simplifying field start-up. The unit cabinet is made of galvanized steel, bonderized, and coated with a powder coat paint, which provides a durable and corrosion-resistant exterior, reducing the need for frequent cosmetic maintenance.

The control circuit operates on 24V, a standard voltage for HVAC controls, making it compatible with a wide range of thermostats and control accessories. The electrical power connection is single-point, simplifying electrical installation.

Overall, the Bryant Preferred™ Series 2-Stage Heat Pump, Model 226A, is designed for reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible heating and cooling, with features that support flexible installation and straightforward maintenance.
