Overview

The BT Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 600 Kit is a system designed to extend your home's Wi-Fi coverage and provide additional wired network connections. It consists of two main components: a Broadband Extender and a Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot. This kit allows you to create a more robust and widespread network within your home, catering to both wireless and wired devices.

Function Description

The primary function of the BT Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 600 Kit is to leverage your home's existing electrical wiring to transmit network data. This technology, known as Powerline, allows you to extend your internet connection to areas of your home where Wi-Fi signals might be weak or non-existent, without the need for long Ethernet cables running through your house.

The Broadband Extender acts as the initial point of connection to your router. It plugs into a wall socket and connects to your router via an Ethernet cable. Its role is to inject the network signal into your home's electrical wiring. It also provides an Ethernet port for a wired connection if needed.

The Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot is the device that receives the network signal from your electrical wiring and then broadcasts it as a new Wi-Fi network. It also includes Ethernet ports, allowing you to connect wired devices such as smart TVs, gaming consoles, or desktop computers directly to the network in a different room. This dual functionality (Wi-Fi and Ethernet) makes it a versatile solution for various connectivity needs.

The kit supports the creation of two separate Wi-Fi networks: one from your existing broadband router and another from the new hotspot. This can be beneficial as one network might offer better speed or reliability depending on your location within the house.

Usage Features

The BT Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 600 Kit is designed for ease of use, with straightforward setup and connection processes.

Initial Setup (Extender near Router):

  1. Connect the Extender: Plug one end of the provided Ethernet cable into a spare Ethernet socket on your router/hub.
  2. Connect to Extender: Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Broadband Extender.
  3. Power On Extender: Plug the Broadband Extender directly into a wall power socket and ensure it's switched on. It's crucial to plug it directly into a wall socket, not an extension lead, for optimal performance.

Setting up the Home Hotspot:

  1. Power On Hotspot: Plug the Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot directly into a wall power socket near the device you wish to connect. Again, direct wall socket connection is important.
  2. Wait for Connection: Allow a couple of minutes for the hotspot to establish a connection. Once connected, the Wireless, WPS/Link, and Power lights on the hotspot should illuminate, indicating readiness.

Connecting Your Devices (Wi-Fi):

  1. Display Networks: Use your device's wireless connection software or settings to view available wireless networks.
  2. Select Hotspot: Find and select the network named "BTHomeSpot-XXX" (where XXX is a unique identifier for your hotspot).
  3. Enter Key: Input the wireless key, which is printed on the pull-out card provided with the kit.
  4. Complete Connection: Finalize the connection on your device.

Wi-Fi Cloning (Optional Feature):

The hotspot offers a Wi-Fi cloning feature that allows it to adopt your router's existing Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and wireless key. This means devices already configured to connect to your router will automatically connect to the new hotspot when in range, providing a seamless roaming experience. This feature requires your router to support WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).

  1. Hotspot Placement: Plug the hotspot into a power socket near your broadband wireless router (ideally in the same room). Wait for the Wireless light to turn steady green.
  2. Router WPS: Press the WPS button on your router.
  3. Hotspot WPS/Link: Within 2 minutes, press and hold the WPS/Link button on the hotspot for at least 15 seconds. The Wireless light will flash orange and green during this process.
  4. Wait for Steady Green: Once the Wireless light returns to steady green, the cloning is complete. You can then move the hotspot to your desired location to extend coverage.
  5. Automatic Connection: Your Wi-Fi devices should now automatically connect to the hotspot when in range.

Connecting Your Devices (Ethernet Cable):

For devices that require a wired connection or for maximum stability, you can connect them directly to the Ethernet ports on the Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot using an Ethernet cable. The hotspot can support multiple devices connected via both Ethernet and Wi-Fi simultaneously.

Adding More Powerline Extenders:

The system is expandable. You can add more Broadband Extenders to your existing network to further extend coverage.

  1. Plug in New Extender: Plug the additional Broadband Extender directly into a wall power socket.
  2. Initiate Pairing: Press the Link button on the new extender for 5 to 8 seconds. Wait for the Power light to turn steady green.
  3. Confirm Pairing: Press the Link button on the new extender again, this time for 1 second.
  4. Connect to Existing Network: Within 2 minutes, press the Link button on one of your existing broadband extenders (already part of the network) for 1 second.
  5. Wait for Connection: Allow time for the connection to complete. The Power and Data indicators on the new extender should light up.

Troubleshooting and Connection Help:

The manual provides detailed guidance for common issues:

  • All lights off: Ensure the hotspot is switched on by pressing the Power button.
  • Can't connect via Wi-Fi: Verify the correct wireless network name (SSID) and key are being used. Consult your device's help for viewing wireless networks.
  • Poor Wi-Fi performance: Consider trying both the hotspot's network and your router's network as one might be faster. Compare signal strengths. Avoid placing the hotspot near microwaves or other electrical equipment that might cause interference. Moving the device closer to the hotspot can improve signal quality. Be aware that thick walls or ceilings can affect Wi-Fi signals.
  • WPS/Link light off or flashing: If adding the hotspot to an existing network, press the WPS/Link button on the hotspot for 1 second, then the Link button on an existing broadband extender for 1 second within 2 minutes. The WPS/Link light should turn steady green. If issues persist, try plugging units in the same room to check for electrical wiring interference. House appliances drawing large power can also cause interference. Using BT broadband extenders is recommended for best performance. If router ports are full, consider unplugging a device, using Wi-Fi, or purchasing a network switch.

Maintenance Features

The BT Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot 600 Kit includes features for resetting the devices to their factory default settings, which can be useful for troubleshooting or reconfiguring the network.

Reset to Factory Settings:

If an extender or hotspot stops working or becomes unpaired, you can reset it.

  1. Power On: Ensure the extender or hotspot is plugged in and the power socket is switched on.
  2. Perform Reset:
    • For the extender, press the Link button for more than 15 seconds.
    • For the hotspot, press the Reset button for 1 second.
  3. Wait for Restart: Allow a couple of minutes for the device to reset. The Power indicator on both devices should light up, signifying a successful reset.

Light Status Indicators:

The devices feature LED indicators that provide visual feedback on their operational status, aiding in troubleshooting and monitoring:

Mini Wi-Fi Home Hotspot Light Status:

  • Power (Green On): Hotspot running normally.
  • Power (Flashing): Hotspot pairing.
  • Power (Slow Flashing Green): Hotspot in power saving mode.
