The Scan-n-Search Software is a custom OEM version of the eFTIR program with the collect driver for the M500
integrated into it. It connects from the computer’s 9-pin serial port to the M500’s 25-pin serial port. You still have to use
your original Buck supplied custom null modem cable. The pin out is in the original Buck M500 manual.
The Scan-n-Search software is installed from the supplied CD-ROM and includes a PDF copy of the manual but most of
the information is in the help files. The manual is 195 pages long and can be printed if necessary.
You have 30 days to try the software before it must be purchased and registered. Please contact sales@bucksci.com or call
us at 1-800-562-5566 to order. Once we have processed your order you will be able to register the full version of the Scan-
n-Search Software. If you all ready purchased it you must still register it to make your copy permanent.
The software is keyed to the computer you register it on so makes sure to send the request from the computer hooked up to
the instrument.
To register your software, navigate to the help menu and select “Activate License” then depending on if your computer has
internet access select “Internet” otherwise choose “Manual Activation”. Enter the User Name and Key to finish the
activation and run the software.
Navigate to Tools, Instrument, Buck M500/M530 from the top or side menus then choose instrument and COM port. From
the down arrow pick the port that you are connected to.
Scan-n-Search Typical Operation
The M500 expects the computer to be on when it is first started so if the instrument was already running before the
computer was turned on cycle the instrument off then on.
With the instrument warmed up and running start the Scan-n-Search software and open the Collect section that will appear
on the bottom of the screen from the top pull down menu (Tools – Instrument – Buck M500/M530) or Instrument from the
Side Menu.
By default it will start on Background, which is what you will need for each scan. Click on the Green “Start” button and
you can watch the software plot the live data on the top half of the screen. When the background run has finished and the
instrument has reset change the collect from background to sample by clicking the Radio Button to the left of sample. Load
your sample in the instrument and then click the green start button again. You will now see a real time auto-scaling
spectrum drawn in transmission (or absorbance if you picked that from the collect menu). At the end of the scan the file
has a temporary name. Select “Save” to keep the temporary file name or “Save as” to choose the file name. If you exit the
program without saving the files the scans in active memory are lost.
After files are saved you can do post collection manipulations like zap, baseline correction or smoothing. Under
conversions you can change to Absorbance or change to Microns or nanometers if needed. Under Analysis function like
peak picking (manual peak picking is best for polystyrene films) and integration are available. The Quant and Analysis
section has the library search in it. You can build your own libraries or purchase one based on your needs. Contact sales
for more information on the libraries.
The File section has printing and print previewing that lets you see the spectrum before you print it if needed.
The files are saved in the Galactic SPC format and can open any of the M500 scan files that were done on all the versions
of the Grams software packages including the Grams libraries.
FDM Libraries
If you purchase any of the optional FDM libraries they install with the FDM_Library_Search_Setup.exe. It finds your
eFTIR install location and installs the libraries there. It gives you a two week temp license and then you follow the
instructions to get you libraries permanent key
