What to do if a Buffalo Storage hard drive has overheated?
    • J
      Julian ThomasAug 12, 2025
If a hard drive has overheated, first check if the fan on the back is running. If it's not, turn off the Buffalo DriveStation and see if dust has accumulated on it. If cleaning the dust doesn't start the fan, it might be broken, and the hard drive may have failed. Check the access LED to confirm the hard drive status. Even if no access LED for either hard drive is lit red, the hard drive still may have overheated. Turn off the power and wait at least one hour before using it again.

What to do if a rebuild is in progress on Buffalo Storage?
    • C
      Colleen BellAug 19, 2025
If a rebuild is in progress, do not turn off the power until rebuilding is complete. When rebuilding is complete, the unit will beep three times and the access LED will glow a steady green (not blinking). During the rebuild, turning off the power can damage the unit or corrupt data.

Do not turn off the power until rebuilding is complete. The unit will beep three times, and the access LED will glow a steady green when rebuilding is complete. Turning off the power during the rebuild can damage the unit or corrupt data. Connection to a computer is still possible during rebuilding, but the data transfer speed will be slower.

      Lauren FosterAug 31, 2025
An overheated hard drive can occur if the fan on the back is not running or if the hard drive has failed. If the fan isn't running, turn off the DriveStation and check if dust has accumulated on the fan. If the fan still does not run after removing dust, it may be broken. If the hard drive may have failed, check the access LED to confirm the hard drive status. A hard drive still may have overheated even if no access LED for either hard drive is lit red. Turn off the power, and wait at least one hour before using again.
