Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions and information for Bulova timepieces, covering various aspects from setting the watch to warranty details and service procedures. It is presented in multiple languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.

Function Description

Bulova timepieces are designed to provide accurate timekeeping and, depending on the model, may include calendar functions (date, day/date) and chronograph features. The core function is to display time, with additional functionalities enhancing its utility.

Important Technical Specifications

Crown Positions:

  • Watches without a calendar typically have two crown positions: #1 (in) and #2 (out).
  • Watches with a calendar (date or day/date) have three crown positions: #1 (in), #2 (intermediate), and #3 (out).

Water Resistance:

  • Watches with a high water resistance of 100 meters or greater often feature a screw-down crown. This crown must be unscrewed before setting and re-screwed afterward to maintain water resistance.
  • Models marked "Water Resistant" on the case back without additional depth markings are not suitable for swimming.
  • For swimming, models marked "50m," "100m," or "200m" are recommended.
  • Deep sea watches are warranted not to leak when submerged to the depth shown on the dial, provided the crystal and crown remain intact and the case has not been opened.

Power Source:

  • Quartz Watches: Utilize a fresh power cell designed for approximately one year of normal use. The watch will stop when the cell is exhausted, but the mechanism will not be harmed. Exhausted cells should be removed promptly to prevent leakage.
  • Automatic Self-Winding Mechanical Watches: Require manual winding (six to seven turns) before initial wear. Daily activity should be sufficient to keep the watch running, even when not worn at night. Occasional supplementary manual winding may be necessary if daily activity is insufficient. These watches do not use power cells.

Usage Features

Setting Time (2 or 3 Hands Only - Two-Position Crown):

  1. Pull the crown out to position #2.
  2. Turn the crown to set the hands to the correct time.
  3. Push the crown back in to position #1.

Setting Time with Printed Calendar (3-Position Crown):

  1. Pull the crown out to position #3.
  2. Move the hands forward by turning the crown. Observe the date change past 12 o'clock (midnight).
  3. Set the hands to the correct A.M. or P.M. time.
  4. Push the crown back in to position #1.
  5. For quick calendar setting: Pull the crown out to position #2. The second hand will continue to move. Turn the crown in one direction to adjust the date. If the watch has a day-of-the-week display, turn the crown in the opposite direction.
  6. Push the crown back in to position #1 after setting.
    • Note: Do NOT adjust the day/date between 9 P.M. and 4 A.M., as this may cause incorrect calendar engagement, requiring readjustment.

Setting and Using Chronograph Watches:

  1. Set the timekeeping hands and calendar (if present) as per the above instructions.
  2. Check that chronograph counter hands are at the zero or 12 o'clock start position.
  3. If not, pull the crown out to position #3. Repeatedly push the button at 2 o'clock to adjust the chrono seconds counter hand.
  4. If the watch has an adjustable 0-60 minute counter, push the button at 4 o'clock to adjust it.
  5. Push the crown back in to position #1 once hands are adjusted.
  6. To start the chronograph: Push the button at 2 o'clock once.
  7. To stop the chronograph: Push the button at 2 o'clock again.
  8. To reset the chronograph: Push the button at 4 o'clock once.

Setting Watches with Calendar Displayed by Hands on a Sub-Dial:

  1. Pull the crown out to position #3.
  2. Move the hands forward by turning the crown. The date changes at midnight, followed by the day of the week.
  3. Continue moving hands forward until the correct day of the week is shown on the day hand.
  4. Set the hands to the correct A.M. or P.M. time.
  5. Push the crown back in to position #1.
  6. For quick date setting: Pull the crown out to position #2. The second hand will continue to move. Turn the crown slowly to adjust the date.
  7. Push the crown back in to position #1.

Maintenance Features

General Care:

  • For mechanical watches, periodic cleaning and oiling are suggested for optimum performance.
  • Avoid manipulating the crown when the watch is submerged in water.
  • For quartz watches, if storing for a length of time, leave the crown in the "OUT" position to prolong battery life.

Power Cell Replacement (Quartz Watches):

  • When the power cell is exhausted, it should be removed at the earliest convenience to diminish the possibility of leakage.
  • Never store a watch with an exhausted power cell.
  • Bring the watch to an authorized Bulova dealer for replacement. Use the proper power cell for best performance.

Warranty Information:

  • Bulova Limited 3-Year Warranty: Covers parts that fail due to original defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. Bulova may replace the watch with a comparable one at its option.
  • Exclusions: Periodic service/maintenance for mechanical watches, damage from improper handling/use/alteration/negligence, normal wear and tear (scratches, deterioration), battery/crystal/strap, water damage if not marked "water-resistant" or if improperly resealed after opening, and improperly performed service/maintenance/repairs.
  • Warranty is valid only if the card is fully and correctly completed by an Authorized Bulova dealer and/or original proof of purchase is provided.
  • All implied warranties are limited to the duration of the expressed limited warranty. Bulova is not liable for consequential or incidental damages.

Service Procedures:

  • If service is required, first test the battery (for quartz watches) to ensure sufficient power.
  • If the problem persists, follow specific repair instructions based on the purchase location.
  • Packaging and Mailing: Send the watch in a durable, protective box, postage prepaid and insured for full replacement value. Include a completed warranty card and/or proof of purchase, and details of the requested service (name, address, phone, email). Do not write "Bulova" or "Watch" on the outside of the package. Do not send the original box. A service form can be downloaded from www.bulova.com.
  • Post-Warranty Service: Bulova watchmakers are experts in repair and restoration. An estimate will be provided before work begins. A $12.00 charge applies in the U.S. and Canada for evaluation, postage, and handling for refused estimates or repairs not covered by warranty.
