Overview

The Carrier 40MAQ High Wall Ductless System, available in sizes 09 to 36, is designed to provide quiet, maximum comfort in various indoor environments. This system functions as a high wall fan coil unit, capable of cooling, heating, filtering, and dehumidifying the air. It is primarily controlled via a wireless remote, though a wired remote control is an optional accessory. For basic operation, the unit itself also features a "Manual" button that allows for limited control if the remote is unavailable.

Function Description

The 40MAQ system offers five distinct operating modes to suit different comfort needs:

  • FAN Only: In this mode, the system circulates and filters room air without altering its temperature. This is useful for improving air quality or simply moving air around.
  • AUTO: The AUTO mode automatically adjusts between cooling and heating to maintain a user-selected set point. It's important to note that this mode is recommended for single-zone applications only. In multi-zone setups, using AUTO changover could cause an indoor unit to enter STANDBY mode (indicated by two dashes on the display) until all indoor units are in the same mode (COOLING or HEATING). Heating is prioritized in such scenarios, and simultaneous heating and cooling is not permitted.
  • HEATING: When operating in HEATING mode, the system warms and filters the room air. There is a built-in delay before the fan starts to prevent cold air from blowing into the room until the coil has warmed up.
  • COOLING: This mode cools, dries, and filters the room air, providing relief in warmer conditions.
  • DEHUMIDIFICATION (DRY): The DRY mode prioritizes air dehumidification, filtering and slightly cooling the room air. While effective for reducing humidity, it is not a substitute for a dedicated dehumidifier.

Beyond these core modes, the system includes several advanced features:

  • Sleep Mode: This energy-saving mode can be activated in COOL, HEAT, or AUTO modes. In Cool Mode, the set point gradually increases over two hours, and the fan runs at a low speed before the unit shuts off after five hours. In Heat Mode, the set points are lowered similarly. Sleep mode is canceled if other control buttons (Mode, Temp, Fan, Timer, On/Off) are pressed.
  • Turbo Mode: For rapid cooling or heating, Turbo mode can be engaged. The fan operates at super high speed for 20 minutes, after which the unit reverts to its original setting. It can also be manually terminated.
  • Self Clean Mode: (Available only on sizes 09 to 24) This function automatically cleans and dries the evaporator over a 30-minute cycle, then turns off the unit. It can be activated in COOL or DRY modes and canceled mid-cycle.
  • Follow Me Mode: When activated, the remote control acts as a thermostat, sensing the temperature at its location and sending this data to the air conditioner every three minutes. This ensures the unit maintains the desired temperature based on the remote's position. This feature is not available in DRY and FAN modes.
  • Freeze Protection Mode (FP): (Available only in HEATING mode) This mode sets the coil temperature to 46°F (8°C) and operates the fan at high speed to prevent freezing. It can be activated or deactivated by pressing the "FP" button for approximately two seconds and can also be canceled by other control buttons.
  • Auto Defrost Operation: In HEATING mode, if the outdoor coil frosts, the indoor and outdoor fans temporarily turn off while the system removes the frost. Normal operation resumes automatically once defrosting is complete.
  • Auto Start: In the event of a power failure, the unit stores its operating conditions and automatically restarts under those same conditions when power is restored.
  • Time Delay: To protect the compressor from frequent cycling, there's a 3 to 4 minute delay before the compressor restarts if the ON/OFF button is pressed too soon after a stop.

Usage Features

The primary interface for controlling the 40MAQ system is the wireless remote control, which transmits commands to the indoor unit. The remote features a window display panel that shows the current system status. For convenience, a mounting bracket is provided to secure the remote to a surface.

Key remote control functions include:

  • ON/OFF: Powers the unit on or off.
  • TEMP ▲/▼: Adjusts the temperature set point in 1°C (1°F) increments, with a range of 17°C (62°F) to 30°C (86°F).
  • MODE: Cycles through the operating modes: AUTO, COOL, DRY, HEAT, FAN.
  • FAN SPEED: Selects fan speeds (AUTO, LOW, MED, HIGH). In DRY or AUTO modes, the fan speed is set automatically.
  • SWING: Starts and stops horizontal louver movement. Holding the button for two seconds initiates vertical auto swing (on some units).
  • TIMER ON/OFF: Allows users to program the unit to turn on or off at specified times, up to 24 hours in advance.
  • SLEEP: Activates the energy-saving sleep mode.
  • FRESH: (On some units) Eliminates bacteria, viruses, and microbes, refreshing the air.
  • CLEAN: Starts or stops the self-clean function.
  • LED: Turns the indoor unit's LED display and buzzer on or off.
  • Turbo: Engages rapid cooling or heating.
  • SET/OK: Used to confirm selected functions.

If the remote control is lost, damaged, or its batteries are depleted, the "MANUAL" button on the IR Receiver (located on the indoor unit) provides limited control:

  • Pressing once activates AUTO mode (heat or cool).
  • Pressing twice enters TEST mode for 30 minutes in COOLING mode, then reverts to AUTO mode.
  • Pressing three times turns the system off. Manual operation defaults to a preset set point of 76°F (24°C) and AUTO fan speed.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the 40MAQ system. A periodic maintenance schedule is provided, detailing tasks for indoor and outdoor units.

Indoor Unit Maintenance:

  • Clean Air Filter: This should be done monthly, with increased frequency in dusty environments.
    1. Unscrew filters from the frame.
    2. Pull filters down to remove.
    3. Vacuum the filters.
    4. Clean with warm water.
    5. Shake the filter to remove excess water and dry thoroughly.
    6. Replace the filter by sliding it into the rack until it snaps in place.
    7. Close the front panel. Note: If filters show signs of wear, they should be replaced by a local dealer.
  • Change Remote Control Batteries: Replace both AAA 1.5v alkaline batteries simultaneously when the remote stops beeping or the Transmission Indicator fails to light. If the remote will not be used for several weeks, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Cleaning the Coil: At the beginning of each cooling season or as needed, clean the coil using a vacuum cleaner or a long-bristle brush to avoid damaging the coil fins. Caution: Coil fins are sharp; wear safety protection.

Outdoor Unit Maintenance:

  • Clean Outdoor Coil from Outside: This should be done every six months.
  • Clean Outdoor Coil from Inside: This should be done annually by service personnel.
  • Blow Air Over Electric Parts: This should be done annually by service personnel.
  • Check Electric Connection Tightening: This should be done annually by service personnel.
  • Clean Fan Wheel: This should be done annually by service personnel.
  • Check Fan Tightening: This should be done annually by service personnel.
  • Clean Drain Pans: This should be done annually by service personnel.

General Maintenance Notes:

  • When cleaning the front panel, do not use water hotter than 105°F (40.6°C) and avoid pouring water directly onto the fan coil. Abrasive or petroleum-based cleaners can damage the panel.
  • Before any cleaning or maintenance, always turn off power to the system at the outdoor disconnect switch and, if applicable, at the indoor unit's separate switch.
  • For extended shutdown periods, clean and reposition the filters, then operate the unit in FAN ONLY mode for 12 hours to dry internal parts. Finally, turn off the main power supply and remove batteries from the remote control.

System Operation Recommendations for Efficiency:

  • Replace both remote control batteries at the same time.
  • Point the remote control toward the unit display panel when transmitting a command.
  • Keep doors and windows closed while the unit is operating.
  • Contact an authorized service representative for any unresolved problems.
  • Do not perform cleaning or maintenance while the unit is on.
  • Keep the unit's display panel away from direct sunlight and heat to prevent interference with remote control transmissions.
  • Do not block air intakes and outlets on the indoor or outdoor units.
  • Select a comfortable thermostat setting and maintain it; avoid frequent adjustments.
  • Keep the filter clean; frequent cleaning may be necessary depending on indoor air quality.
  • Use drapes, curtains, or shades to block direct sunlight on hot days.
  • Limit the unit's run time using the TIMER function.
