Do you have a question about the Case IH Steiger 400 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an operator's manual for Case IH Steiger® and Quadtrac® series tractors, specifically covering models Steiger® 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, and Quadtrac® 450, 500, 550, 600, all of which are Tier 2 tractors with PINs starting from JEEZ00000JF318001. The manual, part number 51461879, is the 1st edition in English, published in September 2018.

Function Description

The Steiger® and Quadtrac® series tractors are heavy-duty agricultural machines designed for customary farming, land leveling, and related agricultural operations. They are equipped to handle rear-drawbar towed implements and hitch-mounted implements for tillage, planting, seeding, and hauling. The Quadtrac® models feature a track-based drive system for enhanced traction and reduced ground pressure, while Steiger® models typically utilize large wheels. The tractors incorporate advanced control systems, including PowerDrive and CVXDrive™ transmissions, electronic steering, and differential lock systems, to optimize performance and productivity in various field conditions.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual covers a range of models, with "row crop models" referring to Steiger® 400 and 450, and "high power models" encompassing Steiger® 500, 550, 600, and all Quadtrac® models. While specific engine specifications, power train and hydraulics, lubricants, capacities, speed charts, vehicle dimensions, and maximum operating weight are detailed in Chapter 9 ("SPECIFICATIONS"), the table of contents indicates these are crucial aspects of the tractor's technical profile. The inclusion of Tier 2 compliance suggests adherence to specific emissions standards for the engine. The CVXDrive™ transmission, a continuously variable transmission, offers advanced control over engine speed and power delivery.

Usage Features

The operator's manual provides comprehensive instructions for operating the tractor safely and efficiently. Key usage features include:

  • Controls and Instruments: Detailed descriptions of the operator's platform, seat adjustments, forward controls (steering column, front console, pedals, ventilation, sun shade), right-hand side controls (armrest console, multi-function handle, throttles, control panel), rearward controls (sun shade), and overhead controls (ATC, center panel, radio, lights, rear-view mirror).
  • Instrument Cluster: An overview of gauges, status and warning icons, upper and lower displays, keypad, and various instrumentation menus for setup, adjustment, and performance monitoring.
  • Operating Instructions: Guidance on commissioning the unit, starting and stopping the engine (including cold temperature operation), and moving the unit (inching pedal, transmission control lever).
  • Transmission Systems: In-depth coverage of both PowerDrive and CVXDrive™ transmissions, including their overviews, controls, driving procedures, startup gear changes, and Automatic Productivity Management (APM).
  • Advanced Systems: Information on electronic steering, differential lock, power management, constant engine speed control, electronic end-of-row system, and engine compression brake (if equipped).
  • Parking: Instructions for automatic park lock and park brake engagement for CVXDrive™ transmissions.
  • Transport Operations: Details on road transport (warning lamps, safe speed, safety chain), shipping transport (securing the tractor), and recovery transport (safety rules, towing).
  • Working Operations: General information, rear Power Take-Off (PTO) safety rules and connection, Three-Point Hitch (identification, link adjustment, sway block, hitch quick coupler, transport lock, operation), Drawbars and Towing Attachments (safety rules, drawbar capacities, scraper operation), Trailer Brake Coupler (safety rules, connections), Auxiliary Power Connections (external power, cab power), Hydraulic Remote Control Valves (couplers, connections, optional circuits, remote valve transport lock, right-hand armrest controls, joystick operation, display screens, auxiliary mode, auto depth control), and Ballasting the Tractor (guidelines, weights, bolt torque, wheel slip).

Maintenance Features

The manual emphasizes routine and periodic maintenance to ensure proper tractor function and longevity. Key maintenance features include:

  • General Information: Accessing the engine hood, side shields, service door, battery, power cut-off switch, fuel tank (filling, capacity), tire and rim service, jacking points, lubricants and capacities, engine oils, consumables (diesel fuel, biodiesel fuels), coolant (Organic Acid Technology), electrical specifications, battery system, auxiliary battery connections, and engine hourmeter.
  • Maintenance Planning: A comprehensive maintenance chart outlining tasks at various intervals.
  • Warning Message Display: Instructions for checking the air cleaner, primary fuel filter, and restricted fuel supply.
  • Every 10 hours or daily: Checks for engine oil level, wheel bolt torque (wheel and wheel weight), idler and roller wheel oil, transmission oil level, hydraulic and axle oil level, engine coolant level, fuel level, and general tractor inspection.
  • Every 50 hours: Maintenance for fuel tank and fuel filter, articulation hinges (upper front, rear, lower), oscillation hinge (rear), articulation cylinders (front, rear, left-hand, right-hand), hitch cylinder pins (upper, lower), hitch rockshaft (left-hand, right-hand), hitch lift links and top link, and driveshaft carrier bearing.
  • First 100 hours: Service for PowerDrive transmission filter and clutches, CVXDrive™ transmission filters and clutches, Power Take-Off clutches on CVXDrive™ transmission, engine fuel filter, and hydraulic oil filters.
  • Every 600 hours: Maintenance for engine oil and filter, engine fuel filter, engine fuel pre-filter, fuel tank vent, cab air filter (outside), air tubing (engine), alternator-water pump belt, Power Take Off (PTO) carrier bearing and slip joint, radiator and coolers, saddle tanks, and cab recirculation filter.

  • Fuse and Relay Locations: Component identification for electrical troubleshooting.
  • Storage: Procedures for placing the tractor in and removing it from storage.
  • Troubleshooting: Fault code resolution and display warnings for PowerDrive and CVXDrive™ transmissions.

The manual explicitly states that certain periodic service and maintenance actions, such as engine valve adjustment and fuel injector nozzle service, require professional service personnel due to specialized facilities, technical skills, and tools not supplied with the machine. It also warns against unauthorized modifications, emphasizing that such actions can lead to serious injury or death and will void the warranty.
