SECTION 35 - HYDRAULIC SYSTEM - CHAPTER 1
35-7
REEL LIFT CYLINDERS
The reel lift system for the grain head consists of two
cylinders, a master, and a slave.
Reel lift cylinders are single acting. The master
cylinder is filled with oil on both sides of the piston.
When oil under pressure flows to the master cylinder
inlet, the rod extends and oil is forced out of the rod
side and into the inlet of the slave cylinder causing it
to also extend. The diameters of the piston rods and
cylinders are matched to the volume of oil being
transferred so that both rods extend simultaneously
and equally. A bleed screw at the rod end of the slave
cylinder allows air to be bled from the system.
Disassembly and servicing the cylinders is similar.
Be sure, however, to have the correct seal kit. Seal
kits are not interchangeable.
Cylinder Removal
NOTE: The reel lift master, and slave cylinders are
mounted nearly the same. Only one will be
discussed.
1. Support the reel assembly with a suitable lifting
device at both ends to assure that the reel will not
drop when the cylinders are removed.

2. Label and disconnect the hydraulic hose(s), 1,
from the cylinder.
3. Take out the cotter pin and withdraw the clevis pin
from the upper cylinder mount at 2.
