This document is an operation guide for the Casio Watch Module 5550, covering models MSG-S600 and MSG-S600G. It provides comprehensive instructions on how to use, maintain, and troubleshoot the watch.
Function Description
The Casio Watch Module 5550 is a solar-powered timepiece with a range of digital and analog functions.
Timekeeping Mode:
This is the primary mode for displaying the current time. The watch features both analog hands (hour and minute) and a digital LCD display. The digital display can cycle through various contents, including month, day, hour, and minute, by pressing button (A). The watch supports both 12-hour and 24-hour timekeeping formats. It also includes a Full Auto Calendar from 2000 to 2099 and can display summer time (DST).
World Time Mode:
The watch allows users to view the current time in 48 cities across 31 time zones, as well as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Users can easily check the time in a selected World Time City and configure summer time settings for that city. There's also a feature to swap the Home Time and World Time displays.
Stopwatch Mode:
The stopwatch function measures elapsed time up to 59 minutes, 59.99 seconds, in units of 1/100 of a second. It supports measuring elapsed time, split times, and timing first and second place finishers.
Timer Mode:
The countdown timer can be set for durations up to 100 minutes, in 1-second units. An alarm sounds for 10 seconds when the countdown reaches zero. The timer can be paused and reset to its start time.
Alarms and Hourly Time Signal:
The watch features five independent alarms, each with a 10-second alarm tone. The hourly time signal causes the watch to beep every hour on the hour. Both alarms and the hourly time signal can be individually enabled or disabled.
Illumination (Auto Light):
The watch is equipped with an LED light that illuminates the face for viewing in the dark. Illumination can be activated manually by pressing button (B). The Auto Light feature, when enabled, automatically turns on the face illumination when the watch is positioned at an angle of 40 degrees or more. Users can select an illumination duration of either 1.5 seconds or 3 seconds.
Power Saving Function:
To conserve battery power, the watch has a power-saving function. If left in a dark location for about one hour between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the digital display will go blank (Level 1 power saving). If left in this condition for six or seven days, all hands will stop, and the digital display will go blank (Level 2 power saving), disabling all functions. The watch can recover from power saving by pressing any button, moving it to a bright location, or triggering auto light.
Hand Home Position Adjustment:
This feature allows users to adjust the alignment of the analog hour and minute hands if they become misaligned with the digital time due to strong magnetism or impact.
Button Operation Tone:
The watch provides an audible tone when a button is pressed. This tone can be enabled or disabled as desired.
Usage Features
Navigating Between Modes:
Pressing button (C) cycles through the different watch modes. Holding down (C) for at least four seconds in any mode will return the watch to the Timekeeping Mode.
Shifting the Hands:
To facilitate easier viewing of the digital display, the analog hands can be temporarily shifted out of the way. This is achieved by holding down button (C) for at least two seconds until "[HAND]" appears. Holding (C) again for two seconds will return the hands to their normal timekeeping positions. If no operation is performed for about one hour with the hands shifted, they will automatically return to normal.
Setting Time and Date:
The time and date settings, including Home City, summer time, 12/24-hour format, seconds, hours, minutes, year, month, and day, can be configured in the Timekeeping Mode. This involves holding down button (A) to enter the setting screen and then using buttons (B) and (D) to adjust values and (C) to cycle through settings.
High-speed Scrolling:
When changing settings in any mode, holding down button (B) or (D) will scroll through the settings at a high speed, making adjustments quicker.
Auto-return:
If a time or other setting screen is displayed (indicated by a flashing digital display) and no operation is performed for about two or three minutes, the watch will automatically exit the setting screen.
Alarm Countdown Display:
In the Timekeeping Mode, the watch can display a countdown to the next upcoming alarm if there are 60 or fewer minutes remaining until its alarm time.
Maintenance Features
Solar Charging:
The watch is powered by a rechargeable battery, which is charged by a solar panel integrated into the watch face. Exposure to sunlight or artificial light generates electricity to charge the battery. To ensure proper charging, the watch should be placed in a location exposed to bright light when not being worn. It's important to avoid charging the watch under extremely high temperatures, such as on a car dashboard in the sun or near incandescent light bulbs, as this can cause the watch to become hot or the display panel to turn black temporarily.
Checking the Charge Level:
The watch provides a display indicator ([H], [M], [L]) to show the current charge level of the battery.
- Charge Level 1 (Good): All functions are enabled.
- Charge Level 2 (Good): All functions are enabled.
- Charge Level 3 (Low): "[L]" and "[LOW]" flash, and face illumination, sounds (alarms), and all functions except Timekeeping Mode are disabled. If [H], [M], and [L] are all flashing, it indicates that all functions are disabled due to momentary battery power consumption.
- Charge Level 4 (Low): "[CHG]" starts to flash, all functions are disabled, and all hands stop at 12 o'clock.
- Charge Level 5 (Dead): All hands are stopped, digital displays are blank, memory data is lost, and watch settings return to factory defaults.
Water Resistance:
The watch's water resistance is indicated by markings like "WATER RESIST" or "WATER RESISTANT" on the back cover, along with a BAR rating (e.g., 5BAR, 10BAR, 20BAR).
- No BAR mark: Not protected against sweat or direct splashing.
- 5BAR: Suitable for hand washing, rain, and water-related work/swimming, but not windsurfing or skin diving.
- 10BAR: Suitable for hand washing, rain, water-related work/swimming, windsurfing, and skin diving.
- 20BAR: Suitable for all the above, including skin diving.
It is crucial not to operate the crown or buttons while the watch is submerged or wet. Avoid wearing the watch in baths, heated swimming pools, saunas, or high-temperature/humidity environments. After submersion in seawater, rinse the watch with plain water. Gaskets should be replaced periodically (every two to three years) to maintain water resistance.
General Care:
The watch should be kept clean by frequently wiping it with a soft cloth to remove dirt, sweat, water, and other foreign matter. After exposure to seawater or mud, rinse it with clean fresh water. For metal or resin bands with metal parts, use a soft toothbrush with a weak solution of water and mild neutral detergent, or soapy water, then rinse thoroughly and wipe dry. For resin bands, wash with water and wipe dry. For leather bands, wipe water and sweat with a soft cloth. Periodically rotate the crown and rotary bezel, and press buttons to maintain proper operation.
Avoiding Damage:
- Temperature: Avoid leaving the watch in very high or very low temperatures, as this can cause timekeeping inaccuracies or malfunction.
- Impact: While designed to withstand daily use, strong impacts can lead to malfunction.
- Magnetism: Keep the watch away from strong magnetic devices (speakers, magnetic necklaces, cell phones) as magnetism can affect timekeeping accuracy.
- Electrostatic Charge: Strong electrostatic charge can cause incorrect time display or damage electronic components.
- Chemicals: Avoid contact with thinners, gasoline, solvents, oils, fats, cleaners, adhesives, paints, medicines, or cosmetics, as these can cause discoloration or damage to resin, leather, and other parts.
- Storage: If not used for a long time, wipe the watch clean and store it in a cool, dry place.
- Resin Components: Avoid prolonged contact with other items while wet to prevent color transfer. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or dirt can cause discoloration. Friction can also cause discoloration of painted components.
- Leather Band: Avoid prolonged contact with other items while wet to prevent color transfer. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or dirt can cause discoloration.
- Metal Components: Clean dirt from metal components to prevent rust. If exposed to sweat or water, wipe thoroughly with a soft, absorbent cloth and allow to dry in a well-ventilated location.
Skin Irritation:
Individuals with sensitive skin or in poor physical condition may experience skin irritation. Keep leather and resin bands clean. If a rash or irritation occurs, remove the watch and consult a skin care professional.
Troubleshooting:
The guide includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as:
- Not knowing the current mode.
- Stopped hands and unresponsive buttons (indicating a dead battery or charge recovery mode).
- Hands suddenly moving at high speed (due to power saving recovery).
- Incorrect time displayed by the watch (due to incorrect city/time zone settings or misaligned hands).
