Overview

The Cisco Touch Controller is a versatile interface designed to manage Webex-enabled room devices, facilitating seamless communication and content sharing within a professional environment. It serves as the primary control point for initiating calls, managing meetings, and interacting with various features of the room system.

Function Description

The core function of the Cisco Touch Controller is to provide an intuitive user interface for Webex-enabled room devices. It allows users to place calls, join meetings, and share content with ease. The controller integrates with the Webex ecosystem, enabling both direct interaction with the room device and remote control via the Webex app on personal devices. This dual control mechanism offers flexibility, catering to different user preferences and scenarios.

Usage Features

Placing Calls:

The controller offers multiple methods for placing calls, ensuring flexibility and convenience.

  • From Contact List: Users can initiate a call by tapping the green "Call" button on the main display. To find a specific contact, they can search within "Favorites" or "Recents" lists. Once the desired contact is located, tapping their entry reveals the green "Call" button, which, when tapped again, places the call. This method is ideal for frequently contacted individuals or groups.
  • Using Name, Number, or Address: For new contacts or specific addresses, users can tap the green "Call" button and then the "Search or Dial" field. This action brings up a keyboard, allowing them to enter a name, number, or address. As they type, possible matches and suggestions appear. If the correct match is listed, tapping it and then the green "Call" button places the call. If no match appears, or if a specific address is being used, tapping the green "Call" button after typing the full entry places the call. This feature supports direct dialing and searching within the organization's directory.

Sharing Content:

The controller simplifies content sharing, both within a call and locally.

  • During a Call: To share content with remote participants, users first connect their source device (e.g., laptop) to the room device using a suitable cable or via wireless sharing through the Webex Teams app. Once the source is connected and switched on, they tap "Share" on the controller. Before sharing, users can tap "Local preview" to view the content on the room display without sharing it with others. Tapping the 'X' in the upper right corner returns to the previous screen. To share the content with remote participants, users tap "Share in call." To stop sharing, they tap "Stop Sharing."
  • Locally (Outside a Call): For local content sharing without an active call, users simply tap the blue "Share" button (not explicitly shown in the provided image but implied by the interface).

Joining Webex Meetings:

The controller provides a straightforward way to join scheduled Webex meetings.

  • Users tap the "Webex" button on the display.
  • They then enter the meeting number listed in the Webex Meetings invite and tap "Join" to enter the meeting.

Remote Control via Webex App:

The Cisco Touch Controller can be controlled remotely using the Cisco Webex app on a mobile device, tablet, or computer (PC or MAC).

  • Users start the Webex app on their personal device.
  • Pairing with the room device occurs automatically.
  • Within the Webex app, users tap on a specific "space" (a virtual meeting place).
  • Tapping the "Call" icon in the upper right corner and choosing "Call on Webex" transforms the app into a remote control for the room device, allowing users to manage calls and meetings from their personal device.

Webex Spaces:

Webex Spaces are virtual meeting places central to the Webex experience. They allow groups of people or just two individuals to communicate and share content. Users can be added to existing spaces or create new ones. The Webex app facilitates calling others within these spaces by typing their email address or searching within the app. It's important to note that searches are typically limited to individuals within the user's organization or those previously contacted. However, meetings, people, or groups can also be called using their video (SIP URI) addresses.

Maintenance Features

Do Not Disturb Mode:

The controller includes a "Do not disturb" feature, which prevents the device from responding to incoming calls.

  • To activate it, users tap the device name in the upper left corner of the display.
  • They then activate "Do not disturb" from the corresponding menu.
  • Tapping anywhere outside the menu closes it.
  • While in "Do not disturb" mode, users can still place outgoing calls.
  • The system may have a time-out setting (defaulting to 60 minutes) after which the device automatically returns to responding to incoming calls. This ensures that the device doesn't remain in "Do not disturb" indefinitely if forgotten.

The Cisco Touch Controller is designed to be a robust and user-friendly interface, streamlining the experience of using Webex-enabled room devices for communication and collaboration. Its various call placement, content sharing, and meeting management features, combined with remote control capabilities and maintenance options like "Do not disturb," make it an essential tool for modern meeting environments.
