Overview

This document is an operator's manual for a Columbia Model Series 79K Hydrostatic Lawn Tractor. It covers safe operation practices, setup, operation, maintenance, service, troubleshooting, and warranty information.

The Columbia Model Series 79K Hydrostatic Lawn Tractor is designed for cutting normal residential grass up to 10 inches in height. It is not intended for mowing heavy brush, weeds, or extremely tall grass, nor for clearing brush. The tractor is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, allowing for smooth speed control.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Tire Pressure: Maximum tire pressure is 30 psi. Recommended operating pressure is approximately 10 psi for rear tires and 14 psi for front tires. Uneven tire pressure can cause uneven mowing.
  • Engine Oil: The tractor is shipped with motor oil in the engine, but the oil level must be checked before operation. Refer to the separate Engine Operator/Owner Manual for specific oil type and quantity.
  • Fuel: The gasoline tank is located under the hood. Use regular unleaded gasoline. Do not overfill; leave approximately 1/2 inch below the filler neck for expansion.
  • Fuse: A 20 AMP fuse protects the electrical system from excessive amperage.
  • Cutting Blades: The manual specifies blade part numbers for 42-inch (942-04308) and 46-inch (942-04290) decks. Blade spindle part numbers are 918-06991 (42-inch) and 918-06989 (46-inch).
  • Drive Belts: Mowing deck drive belts are 954-04060C (42-inch) and 954-04219 (46-inch).
  • Battery: Part number 925-1707D.
  • Key: Part number 625-01745A.
  • Throttle Control/Cable: Part number 746-04406.
  • Choke Control Cable: Part number 746-1089.
  • Discharge Chute Assembly: Part number 631-05191.
  • Slope Operation: Do not operate on slopes greater than 15 degrees.

Usage Features:

  • Controls: The tractor features a throttle/choke lever, parking brake lever and pedal, speed control lever, PTO (blade engage) lever, deck lift lever, and ignition switch module.
  • Ignition Switch: Available in 3-position or 4-position types, or as a module. The ignition switch activates the engine and may control headlights.
  • Reverse Caution Mode: For models equipped with an ignition switch module, this mode allows operation in reverse with blades engaged, activated by turning the key to the REVERSE CAUTION MODE (Yellow) position and pressing the REVERSE PUSH BUTTON. Mowing in reverse is not recommended.
  • Speed Control: The speed control lever on the left rear fender controls ground speed and direction (forward/reverse). It should be moved slowly and gradually.
  • Parking Brake: Located on the left running board and dash panel. Must be engaged to start the engine and if the operator leaves the seat.
  • PTO (Blade Engage) Lever: Located on the right fender, this lever engages power to the cutting deck or other attachments. It must be in the disengaged (OFF) position when starting the engine.
  • Deck Lift Lever: Located on the right fender, used to change the cutting deck height.
  • Headlights: On some models, headlights are ON when the engine is running or when the ignition key is moved out of the STOP position.
  • Manual Movement: The hydrostatic transmission has a bypass rod to allow manual movement of the tractor when pulled out and locked. This must be engaged before attempting to move the tractor manually to prevent transmission damage.
  • Safety Interlock System: Prevents engine starting unless the parking brake is engaged and PTO is disengaged. Automatically shuts off the engine if the operator leaves the seat with the PTO engaged or if the parking brake is not engaged.

Maintenance Features:

  • Engine Oil Change: Instructions are provided for models with Briggs & Stratton and Kohler engines, including draining and refilling oil, and changing the oil filter.
  • Air Filter: Maintenance instructions are provided in the separate Engine Operator/Owner Manual.
  • Spark Plug: Clean and adjust gap periodically; replacement is recommended annually.
  • Battery Charging: If the battery has not been used for an extended period, charge it with a 12V lead-acid charger at a maximum of 10 amperes for at least eight hours.
  • Fuse Replacement: Always use a fuse with the same amperage capacity.
  • Cutting Blade Maintenance: Blades should be inspected periodically for damage and sharpened or replaced when worn. Proper balance is crucial to prevent vibration and damage. Torque specifications for blade spindle hex flange nut are 70-90 lbs-ft.
  • Deck Belt Change: Instructions are provided for 38-inch, 42-inch, and 46-inch decks. Only factory-approved V-belts should be used.
  • Transmission Drive Belt Change: Requires special tools and is recommended to be performed by an authorized service dealer.
  • Deck Wash System™: For models equipped with a water port, this system allows rinsing grass clippings from the deck's underside.
  • Deck Leveling: Instructions for front-to-rear and side-to-side deck adjustments are provided. Tire pressure should be checked before adjustment.
  • Seat Adjustment: The seat position can be adjusted by loosening a hex screw or knob screw on the bottom of the seat.
  • Parking Brake Adjustment: If the tractor does not stop completely or the rear wheels turn with the parking brake engaged, the brake needs adjustment by an authorized service dealer.
  • Lubrication: Points such as transmission pivot points, parking brake, and lift linkage should be lubricated at least once per season with light oil. Front axle pivot points with grease fittings should be lubricated every 25 hours.
  • Cleaning: Keep the machine free of grass, leaves, and debris. Avoid using pressure washers or garden hoses directly on the engine to prevent damage to electrical components.
