  If your Columbia Lawn Mower engine runs erratically, it might be due to the unit running with the CHOKE activated, loose spark plug wires, a blocked fuel line or stale fuel, a plugged vent in the gas cap, water or dirt in the fuel system, or a dirty air cleaner. Try moving the throttle control out of the CHOKE position, connecting and tightening the spark plug wire, cleaning the fuel line and filling the tank with clean, fresh gasoline (replacing the fuel filter if equipped), clearing the vent or replacing the cap if damaged, draining the fuel tank and refilling with clean, fresh gasoline, or replacing the air cleaner paper element or cleaning the foam precleaner (if equipped).

  Your Columbia Lawn Mower engine may overheat if the engine oil level is low, or if the airflow is restricted. To resolve this, fill the crankcase with the proper amount and weight of oil. Also, clean any grass clippings and debris from around the engine’s cooling fins and blower housing.

Place the throttle in the FAST (rabbit) position. Avoid mulching when the grass is wet. If the grass is excessively high, mow once at a high cutting height, then mow again at the desired height or make a narrower cutting swath. Sharpen or replace the blade.

It could be because the PTO/Blade is engaged, the spark plug wire is disconnected, the fuel tank is empty or contains stale fuel, the choke is not activated, the spark plug is faulty, the fuel line is blocked, the engine is flooded, the parking brake is not engaged, or the throttle control lever is not in the correct starting position. Make sure the knob (or lever) is in disengaged (OFF) position, connect the wire to the spark plug, fill the tank with clean, fresh gas (less than 30 days old), place the throttle control in CHOKE position, clean/adjust/replace the spark plug, clean the fuel line and replace the fuel filter, crank the engine with the throttle in FAST position, engage the parking brake, and place the t...
