Overview

The Control4 Wireless Motion Sensor is a versatile device that integrates passive infrared (PIR) motion sensing with ambient light detection into a single unit, designed to enhance home automation within a Control4 system. It offers a wide range of control possibilities, allowing for intelligent automation based on object motion, occupancy, and ambient light levels.

Function Description

The Wireless Motion Sensor acts as a trigger for various events within a Control4 system. When motion is detected in its monitored area, it sends a "Motion detected" event to the Control4 controller. Conversely, if no motion is detected for a user-defined "Occupancy Hold Time," a "No motion" event is sent. This functionality enables automated control of lighting, pathway lighting, exterior lighting, HVAC, and audio/video applications, both indoors and outdoors.

Beyond motion detection, the sensor incorporates an ambient light sensor, allowing it to detect outdoor light levels for dawn/dusk events. This feature can be used to automate actions based on natural light conditions.

The device supports "occupancy-based automation controls," which means it can help conserve resources and save money on utilities by controlling systems like heating, cooling, and lighting based on whether a room is occupied. This aligns with environmental policies such as California Title 24 and Canada's NBC 2005.

Multiple motion sensors can be cascaded or linked together to improve detection coverage in larger areas. In such a setup, a "Motion detected" event occurs if any linked sensor detects motion, and a "No motion detected" event is sent only when all linked sensors' Occupancy Hold Times have expired. This cascading is configured within Composer Pro's Connections tab.

Usage Features

  • Composer Properties Page: A feature-rich Composer Properties page allows for high levels of control without requiring programming scripts. This includes adjusting motion sensor sensitivity, configuring occupancy hold time, and setting light sensor parameters.
  • Motion Sensor Sensitivity Adjustment: The sensitivity can be adjusted via a slider in Composer Pro. Lower sensitivity requires more movement to trigger the sensor. A "walk test" is recommended after adjustment to ensure satisfactory performance.
  • Occupancy Hold Time: This setting determines how long the "Motion detected" event remains active after motion ceases. It can be adjusted from five seconds to 60 minutes. A longer hold time can impact battery life.
  • Light Sensor Setup: Allows configuration of "Night mode" and "Day mode" based on light levels. Users can set thresholds for entering and exiting Night mode, along with the required duration for these light conditions.
  • Light Level Monitor: Instructs the sensor to send an updated light level to the ZigBee network when the light level changes by a specified percentage. Lower percentages can compromise battery life.
  • Disable Motion Sensor: The motion sensor function can be disabled when in Day or Night mode, which helps conserve battery life.
  • Check-In Interval: The Wireless Motion Sensor can be instructed to send periodic updates of its motion status and light level. Adjusting this interval can affect battery life.
  • Mounting Considerations: For wall-mount sensors, the recommended mounting height is six to eight feet. The sensor should be placed to avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, and areas with strong electromagnetic interference (e.g., Wi-Fi, cordless phones) to ensure reliable operation. Ceiling-mount sensors cannot be adjusted.
  • Cascading Multiple Sensors: Multiple sensors can be linked to improve coverage in large areas, with events triggered by any sensor and "no motion" events sent only when all linked sensors are clear.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: For battery-powered models, the device uses a 9V alkaline or lithium battery. The battery level is indicated in the Advanced Properties page in Composer Pro.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Removing from Network/Restoring Factory Settings: To remove the sensor from the network and restore factory settings, remove power, then press and hold the ID button while returning power. Continue holding until the LED turns solid orange, then release.
    • Restarting the Sensor: If the sensor is not working properly, remove the batteries or power supply for at least 10 seconds, then return power to ensure a proper reboot.
  • Firmware Updates: The device requires specific Control4 OS versions (1.7.2 or greater for WMS10-2, 1.8.0 or greater for WMS10-2-ZP) for full functionality, implying that software updates may be necessary for optimal performance.
