1. General
This document describes the installation and maintenance of the 12 and
24-fiber versions of CCH Plug & Play™ System modules equipped with LC
duplex shuttered connector adapters (Figure 1).
The shuttered LC adapters used in these modules eliminate the use of
easily misplaced individual dust caps and ensure that the adapters remain
clean when not in use.
IMPORTANT: CCH modules are factory sealed. Breaking the seal will void the
manufacturer’s warranty.

6. Maintenance
The most likely cause of a problem with a module is connector end-face
contamination. Always keep clean dust caps on the modules MTP connector
adapters and the trunks connectors when they are unmated, and clean the
connectors before each mating.
To clean LC duplex connectors
and the LC shuttered adapters on
the front of the CCH module, use
a CLEANER-PORT-LC tool as
described in its instructions.
To clean the MTP connectors and
adapters, use an MTP connector
cleaning tool (p/n 2104466-01)
as described in its instructions
(Figure 4).
Periodically check the fiber optic cable to make sure bends do not exceed the
minimum bend radius. Check the trunk for unnecessary strain. Check the trunk
cable for crimping or crushing.

Overview

The Corning CCH Modules with LC Duplex Shuttered Adapters (cat. number 003-122) are designed for use within CCH Plug & Play™ System modules, available in 12 and 24-fiber versions. These modules are equipped with LC duplex shuttered connector adapters.

Function Description

These modules facilitate the connection of MTP® trunks to LC duplex fiber optic cables. The primary function is to provide a reliable and clean interface for fiber optic connections within a CCH system. The shuttered LC adapters are a key feature, eliminating the need for individual dust caps and ensuring the adapters remain clean when not in use, thereby reducing the risk of contamination and improving connection reliability. The modules are factory sealed, and breaking this seal will void the manufacturer's warranty.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Module Types: 12-fiber and 24-fiber versions.
  • Connector Adapters: LC duplex shuttered adapters on the front, and MTP adapters on the back for trunk connections.
  • MTP Connector Compatibility: Standard MTP connectors with precision guide pins are used. Non-pinned MTP connectors from a trunk are secured into the adapter.
  • Cleaning Tools:
    • CLEANER-PORT-LC tool for LC duplex connectors and shuttered adapters.
    • MTP connector cleaning tool (p/n 2104466-01) for MTP connectors and adapters.
  • Safety: Laser light safety warnings are provided, emphasizing the invisible nature of laser light and the potential for eye damage. Fiber optic cable precautions highlight sensitivity to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces, and the importance of adhering to minimum bend radius and specified pulling force.

Usage Features

  • Easy Installation: Modules are installed by removing a blank panel, positioning the module's fasteners over mounting bracket holes, and pushing in plungers to lock it in place.
  • Secure MTP Connection: MTP connectors are installed by aligning the key with the slot in the adapter and pushing until it clicks. The connector is grasped by its boot (marked "push") during installation.
  • Easy MTP Disconnection: To unplug an MTP connector, the slider (marked "pull") is grasped and pulled. It is explicitly stated not to pull on the boot for disconnection.
  • Shuttered LC Adapters: These adapters automatically protect the fiber end-faces from dust and debris when not in use, simplifying maintenance and improving reliability by preventing contamination.
  • Fiber and Port Labeling: The modules include designated areas for fiber and port labels, aiding in organization and identification within the system.

Maintenance Features

  • Connector Cleaning:
    • LC Duplex Connectors and Shuttered Adapters: Cleaned using a CLEANER-PORT-LC tool.
    • MTP Connectors and Adapters: Cleaned using an MTP connector cleaning tool (p/n 2104466-01).
    • General Cleaning Principle: Always keep clean dust caps on MTP connector adapters and trunk connectors when unmated, and clean connectors before each mating to prevent end-face contamination, which is identified as the most likely cause of module problems.
  • Cable Integrity Checks: Periodically check fiber optic cables to ensure bends do not exceed the minimum bend radius. Inspect the trunk for unnecessary strain, crimping, or crushing.
  • Factory Seal: The modules are factory sealed, and breaking this seal voids the manufacturer's warranty, implying that internal components are not user-serviceable.
  • Revision History: The document includes a revision history, with the initial release in May 2009, indicating ongoing documentation and potential updates for maintenance and usage.
