Why won't my Craftsman 580.329120 Portable Generator start, or why does it run rough?
    • G
      Garrett ButlerJul 30, 2025
If your Craftsman Portable Generator's engine won't start or runs roughly, several factors could be at play. First, ensure the Run/Stop Switch is set to “RUN”. Other potential causes include a dirty air cleaner (clean or replace it), an empty fuel tank (fill it), stale gasoline (drain and refill with fresh fuel), or a disconnected spark plug wire (connect it). Also, the spark plug may be bad (replace it). If there is water in the gasoline, drain the tank and carburetor, then add fresh fuel. If the engine is overprimed, wait 5 minutes before trying to restart it.

If your Craftsman Portable Generator is running, but there is no AC output, there are several possible reasons: * A circuit breaker may be open, in which case, reset the circuit breaker. * There might be a poor connection or defective cord set; check and repair as needed. * The connected device could be faulty; try connecting another device in good condition.
