Overview

The Crestron DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C is a versatile DigitalMedia 8G+ receiver and room controller, designed to handle high-resolution video signals up to 4K60 4:4:4 with HDR10 support. This device serves as a crucial component in a DigitalMedia system, enabling the reception of video and audio signals, scaling them, and providing control capabilities for a display device within a room. Its primary function is to act as an interface between a DigitalMedia switcher or transmitter (or an HDBaseT source) and a display, ensuring seamless integration and optimal video performance.

Function Description

At its core, the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C functions as a DigitalMedia 8G+ receiver. It receives video, audio, and control signals over a single CATx cable from a DigitalMedia 8G+ switcher, transmitter, or an HDBaseT source. This single-cable solution simplifies installation and reduces cable clutter. A key feature is its integrated scaler, which automatically optimizes video signals for the connected display, ensuring the best possible picture quality regardless of the source resolution. This is particularly useful in environments where various sources with different resolutions might be used.

Beyond signal reception and scaling, the device also acts as a room controller. It includes built-in RS-232, IR, and HDMI CEC ports, which allow for programmable control of a display device. This means that through a connected control system, users can power on/off the display, switch inputs, adjust volume, and perform other control functions directly from the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C. This integration of control capabilities streamlines room automation and user experience.

The device supports both DigitalMedia 8G+ and HDBaseT standards, offering flexibility in system design and compatibility with a wide range of equipment. The DM IN port is a Power over DigitalMedia (PoDM+) powered device (PD) port, and it is also compatible with HDBaseT PoE+. This means the unit can receive power directly over the CATx cable from a compatible DigitalMedia switcher or HDBaseT PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment), eliminating the need for a separate power supply in many installations. Alternatively, an optional power pack (PW-2412WU) can be used for power.

For audio output, the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C provides a balanced/unbalanced stereo line level audio output, allowing for connection to external audio systems or amplifiers. This ensures that audio signals received alongside video can be routed to appropriate sound reinforcement systems.

Usage Features

The DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C offers flexible input selection, supporting both automatic and manual switching. In automatic switching mode, the device intelligently displays video from the last detected input source, simplifying operation for users. For more precise control, manual switching allows users to cycle through available input sources (DM IN, HDMI IN, and Disable) by pressing the INPUT SELECT push button. This provides the flexibility to choose a specific source when multiple inputs are connected.

The device includes various LED indicators that provide immediate visual feedback on its operational status. These indicators cover power, DM IN signal, DM IN port link status, HDMI IN signal, HDMI OUT status, and LAN activity. For instance, a solid green DM IN signal LED indicates an active input source, while a flashing green suggests a detected signal that is not currently active. The DM IN port LED indicates whether a DM or HDBaseT link is established and if HDCP video is detected. These visual cues are invaluable for quick troubleshooting and status monitoring.

For network connectivity, the device features a LAN port, enabling it to be integrated into a local network. This allows for IP-based control and monitoring, further enhancing its role as a room controller. It's important to note that the LAN port can only be connected to an Ethernet switch when the DM IN port is not connected to a DigitalMedia switcher, to avoid network conflicts.

The DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C supports various mounting options, including flat surface mounting (such as a wall) and rack rail mounting (front or rear). This adaptability ensures that the device can be discreetly installed in a variety of environments, from conference rooms to classrooms.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C involves a few key aspects, primarily related to firmware updates and IP address management.

Firmware upgrades are crucial for ensuring the device operates with the latest features, bug fixes, and compatibility improvements. Users are advised to upgrade the firmware before using the device. The latest firmware can be downloaded from the Crestron website, ensuring the unit remains up-to-date and performs optimally within the system.

IP address management is another important maintenance consideration, especially in standalone configurations where the device is connected directly to a DigitalMedia 8G+ transmitter without a switcher. In such scenarios, the IP address is assigned using DHCP by default. However, for specific network requirements, users can assign a static IP address. This can be done by holding down the SETUP button during boot-up to assign a default static IP address (192.168.1.253) or by using Crestron Toolbox™ software for a custom static IP address. When connected to a DigitalMedia switcher, the IP address is automatically configured by the switcher, simplifying setup.

The LED indicators serve as a primary diagnostic tool, allowing administrators or users to quickly assess the device's status without needing to access a control system interface. For example, if the DM IN port LED is green, it indicates a DM or HDBaseT link is established, while a solid amber suggests HDCP video detection. These indicators help in identifying potential issues with signal integrity, power, or network connectivity.

The physical design of the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C, with its robust construction and clear labeling of ports, facilitates easy installation and maintenance. The use of standard connectors for RS-232, IR, audio, and HDMI ensures compatibility with common AV equipment and simplifies wiring. The inclusion of terminal blocks for COM, IR, AUDIO OUT, and RELAY connections provides secure and reliable wiring for control signals and analog audio.

Overall, the DM-RMC-4KZ-SCALER-C is designed for straightforward installation, flexible operation, and relatively simple maintenance, making it a reliable choice for integrating high-quality video, audio, and control in various room environments.
