Cleaning Your Slow Cooker

Overview

This document is an owner's guide for a Classic Crock-Pot® slow cooker, specifically designed for use with 2-3.5 quart manual slow cookers. It provides essential information on safety, usage, maintenance, and includes a selection of recipes.

Function Description:

The Crock-Pot® slow cooker is an electrical appliance designed for slow cooking food. It consists of a heating base, a removable stoneware pot, and a lid. The appliance cooks food at a low temperature over an extended period, allowing flavors to develop and meats to tenderize. It features temperature settings (LOW, HIGH, and WARM on some models) to control the cooking process. The WARM setting is exclusively for keeping already cooked food warm and should not be used for cooking.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 2-3.5 quart.
  • Power Cord: A short power-supply cord is used to reduce risks. It features a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) for electric shock reduction.
  • Lid Material: Tempered glass.
  • Stoneware: Removable, ovenproof, and microwave safe. Not for use on gas or electric burners or under a broiler.
  • Heating Base: Contains the heating element; not to be immersed in water or other liquids.

Usage Features:

  • Preparation: Before first use, remove all packaging components. Wash the lid and stoneware with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
  • Assembly: Place the stoneware into the heating base, add ingredients, and cover with the lid.
  • Operation: Plug in the slow cooker and select the desired temperature setting (LOW or HIGH) according to the recipe. The WARM setting is for keeping food warm for a maximum of 4 hours, not for cooking.
  • Filling Guidelines: To avoid over or under-cooking, always fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full. Do not overfill beyond 3/4 full to prevent spillover.
  • Lid Usage: Always cook with the lid on for the recommended time. Do not remove the lid during the first two hours of cooking to allow heat to build efficiently. Use caution when opening the lid during or after cooking, as escaping steam can cause burns.
  • Handling: Always use oven mitts when handling the lid or stoneware. Allow the heating base to cool before handling after removing the stoneware, as it retains residual heat. For appliances with locking lids, never lift or carry by the lid handle; always use the handles on the base. Do not lock the lid while cooking, as this may lead to glass breakage.
  • Placement: Intended for household countertop use only. Keep 6 inches (152 mm) clear from the wall and on all sides. Always use on a dry, stable, level surface. Some countertop and table surfaces are not designed to withstand prolonged heat; placing a hot pad or trivet under the slow cooker is recommended.
  • Food Safety: If power goes out and you are unsure how long it was off, discard the food. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as adding refrigerated foods or cold liquids into a heated pot.
  • Recipe Adjustments:
    • Rice: For best results, use long grain converted rice or specialty rice. If not fully cooked, add 1 to 1.5 cups of liquid per cup of cooked rice and cook for an additional 20-30 minutes.
    • Pasta: Partially cook pasta in boiling water until tender, then add to the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cook time.
    • Beans: Must be softened completely before combining with sugar and/or acidic foods, as sugar and acid prevent softening. Dried beans (especially red kidney beans) should be boiled before adding. Canned beans can be used as a substitute.
    • Vegetables: Many vegetables benefit from slow cooking. Place vegetables in the slow cooker before meat, near the sides or bottom, as they generally cook slower than meat.
    • Herbs and Spices: Ground/dried herbs and spices work well when added at the beginning. Fresh herbs should be added at the end of the cooking cycle to preserve flavor. Adjust seasonings before serving.
    • Milk Products: Milk, cream, and sour cream break down during extended cooking; add during the last 15-30 minutes if possible. Condensed soups can be substituted and cook for longer times.
    • Soups: Add other soup ingredients first, then add water only to cover. Add more liquid at serving time if a thinner soup is desired.
    • Meats: Trim fat, rinse, and pat dry. Browning meat separately can drain fat and add flavor. Position meat in stoneware without touching the lid. Adjust vegetables/potatoes to keep stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full. Cook times vary by cut, type, and bone structure; lean meats cook faster, and bone-in meats require longer cooking. Cut meat into smaller pieces when cooking with precooked foods or light vegetables to ensure even cooking.
    • Frozen Meats: Add at least 1 cup of warm liquid first to prevent sudden temperature changes. An additional 4 hours on LOW or 2 hours on HIGH are typically required, but larger cuts may take longer.
    • Fish: Cooks quickly; add at the end of the cooking cycle, during the last 15 minutes to an hour.
    • Liquid: Ensure adequate liquid to prevent drying or burning. Maintain stoneware fill between 1/2 and 3/4 full.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Always turn off, unplug, and allow the slow cooker to cool before cleaning.
  • Lid and Stoneware: Dishwasher safe or can be washed with hot, soapy water. Do not use abrasive cleaning compounds or scouring pads. A cloth, sponge, or rubber spatula will usually remove residue. For water spots or stains, use a non-abrasive cleaner or vinegar. Do not wash hot stoneware or lid with cold water.
  • Heating Base: Clean the outside with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. Wipe dry. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Never immerse the heating base in water or other liquid.
  • Servicing: No user-serviceable parts. Any servicing beyond cleaning should be performed by an Authorized Service Representative. Do not attempt to repair or adjust electrical or mechanical functions, as this voids the warranty.
  • Initial Use: Slight smoke and/or odor may be detected during initial use, which is normal and will not recur after a few uses.
