The Cuisinart Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew™ Coffeemaker, DGB-700 Series, is designed to deliver a high-quality coffee experience with convenience and customization. Its primary function is to grind whole coffee beans and then brew coffee, all in one integrated unit. This coffeemaker emphasizes extracting maximum flavor from beans through its burr mill and offers various controls to tailor the brewing process to individual preferences.
The coffeemaker operates as a fully automatic system, meaning it can handle the entire process from grinding whole beans to brewing coffee. Users can choose to use whole beans, which are ground just before brewing, or pre-ground coffee. The integrated burr mill is designed to provide an optimal grind for this type of coffeemaker, ensuring proper flavor extraction. A charcoal water filter is included to remove chlorine, bad tastes, and odors from tap water, contributing to the purity of the coffee. The unit has a capacity to make up to twelve cups (54 oz.) of coffee, with a maximum whole bean capacity of 1/2 lb. and a maximum ground coffee capacity of 16 level scoops.
The coffeemaker offers a range of user-friendly features for customization and convenience. The control panel includes an On/Off button with an LED indicator and an audible tone that sounds when brewing is complete. An "Auto Off" feature allows users to set a shutoff time from 0 to 4 hours after brewing. The clock and LCD display show the time of day, auto-on time, and selected strength control setting (MILD, MED, or STRONG).
Setting the clock and program time is straightforward, with Hour and Minute buttons that allow for quick adjustments. The "Program" button, also with an LED indicator, is used to display or set the auto-on time for programmed brewing. For those using pre-ground coffee, a "Grind Off" button with an LED indicator can be pressed to disable the grinder. The "Grind Control" knob allows users to select the desired amount of coffee beans to grind, automatically adjusting for lower cup settings. A "Strength Control" button lets users choose their preferred coffee strength, which is then displayed on the LCD.
The coffeemaker incorporates several safety and convenience features. A "Brew Pause™" feature allows the carafe to be removed for pouring a cup mid-brew, temporarily stopping the coffee flow from the basket. However, it's advised not to remove the carafe for more than 20 seconds to prevent overflow and to maintain optimal flavor profile. The glass carafe is designed with a hands-free lid for easy pouring and an ergonomic handle. A scratch-resistant, nonstick heating plate keeps coffee warm.
The hopper container, where whole beans are stored, can be easily removed for filling and cleaning, and a safety interlock system prevents operation if the hopper is not properly in place. The hopper lid seals out light, moisture, and air to keep beans fresh. Similarly, the filter basket door and filter basket cover also have safety interlock systems, preventing operation if they are not correctly closed or in place.
Cleaning and maintenance are designed to be simple. After each use, all parts should be completely cleaned and dried. The coffeemaker should always be turned off and unplugged before cleaning. The filter basket cover, filter basket, and gold tone filter (or paper filter) should be removed, and discarded coffee grounds disposed of. These components can be washed in warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, or cleaned in the upper rack of a dishwasher. The carafe and its lid can also be washed in warm soapy water and rinsed.
The hopper and coffee chute are recommended to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks, depending on usage frequency. The hopper container and lid can be removed by turning the release knob to the unlocked position, allowing for easy cleaning in warm soapy water or a dishwasher. It's important to note that water should not enter the unit once the hopper container is removed, as this could damage the grinder motor. The area under the hopper container can be wiped with a damp cloth.
The coffee channel cover can be flipped back for easy cleaning of the coffee chute. A brush can be used to remove any ground coffee, pushing grounds toward the grind chute lever to send them through the chute into the filter basket. Proper cleaning of the coffee chute is crucial to prevent grind accumulations that can lead to weak-tasting coffee.
Decalcification is a necessary maintenance step to remove calcium deposits that build up over time on the metal parts. This process involves filling the water reservoir with a mixture of white vinegar and water, then running a brew cycle with the "Grind Off" button pressed. After the cycle, the coffeemaker should be turned off, and the process repeated with fresh cold water. The frequency of decalcification depends on water hardness and usage. The charcoal water filter should be changed every 60 days or 60 uses, or more often if hard water is present.
