Overview

The Cuisinart 2-in-1 Grill & Sandwich Maker, model GRSM4U, is a versatile kitchen appliance designed to provide both grilling and sandwich-making capabilities. This device is engineered for long-life and ease of use, aiming to deliver excellent performance for everyday cooking needs.

Function Description

The Cuisinart GRSM4U serves as a dual-purpose appliance, functioning as both a contact grill/panini press and a deep-filled sandwich maker. It comes with two sets of interchangeable plates: ribbed grill plates and deep-pocketed sandwich plates. The appliance features a temperature control dial with settings for Low, Medium, and High, allowing users to adjust the heat according to the food being cooked. Indicator lights on the front of the appliance signal when the power is on (red light) and when the optimal cooking temperature has been reached (green light). A floating hinge design on the grill plates accommodates varying food thicknesses, ensuring even cooking. For sandwich making, the handle locks to ensure perfectly sealed edges and consistent browning. The appliance also incorporates an integrated fat drainage system, with a small recess at the rear of the plates that directs fat and grease into a removable drip tray.

Usage Features

Before first use, all packaging materials and promotional labels should be removed, and the plates cleaned. Users must select the appropriate plates (grill or sandwich) for their desired cooking task. To fit the plates, the appliance must be switched off and cooled. The plates align with brackets at the back of the housing base and slide underneath, then the front end is pushed down until it locks into place. Pressing the plate release button can facilitate easier plate fitting. For removal, the appliance must be cool, and the upper and lower plate release buttons on the right side of the housing are pressed to loosen and slide out the plates. The integrated drip tray is inserted into a slot on the right side of the lower housing and can be easily slid out for removal.

To operate, the unit is plugged into a suitable mains socket. While the plates have a non-stick coating, it is recommended to prepare them with cooking spray or oil. The lid is closed, and the temperature control dial is set to Low, Medium, or High, depending on the food. For grilling, high heat is suitable for searing meats, while low heat is better for delicate foods like prawns or vegetables. The red light indicates power is on and heating is in progress. Once the green light illuminates, the appliance is ready to cook.

When using the grill plates, food is placed on the bottom plate, and the lid is lowered. The floating hinge adjusts to the food's thickness. Light pressure can be applied to the handle during cooking to lock in flavor. For even cooking, it's important to ensure consistent food thickness when cooking multiple items. The green light may temporarily switch off after food is placed, which is normal as it indicates temperature regulation. Food should be removed with the included scraping tool or a heat-proof plastic spatula to avoid damaging the non-stick coating.

For sandwich making, the sandwich plates are used. Food is placed on the lower sandwich plate, and the handle is closed until a click is heard, indicating it's securely locked. This locking mechanism is crucial for proper sandwich sealing. Similar to grilling, the green light indicates readiness, and food should be removed with appropriate utensils.

After cooking, the temperature dial should be turned to the 'OFF' position, and the power cord unplugged. The appliance must be allowed to cool for at least 30 minutes before handling or cleaning. During initial use, a slight odor and some smoke may occur, which is normal for appliances with non-stick surfaces.

Maintenance Features

Thorough cleaning is recommended before first use and after every subsequent use. After cooking and cooling, the scraping tool can be used to remove any leftover food from the cooking plates. The scraping tool is dishwasher safe. Grease from the drip tray should be disposed of safely, and the tray itself can be cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher.

The cooking plates can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher (top rack only). Metal utensils, such as knives, should never be used for cleaning, as they can damage the non-stick coating. Only wooden or heatproof plastic utensils are suitable. If seafood has been cooked, wiping the cooking plate with lemon juice can help prevent flavor transfer to subsequent recipes.

The housing base, cover, and control knobs can be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth. For tougher stains, a dampened cloth can be used, but abrasive cleaners or harsh pads should be avoided. Between recipes, excess food buildup can be scraped off, and any residue wiped away with a paper towel. Plastic utensils should not be left in contact with hot grill plates.

All parts should be clean and dry before storage. The supply cord should not be wrapped around the main body of the appliance. The plug, lead, or housing should never be immersed in water or any other liquid, nor placed in a dishwasher. The appliance is an attended appliance and should not be left unattended during use or when plugged in. It should also be unplugged after each use and before cleaning.
