Overview

This document provides instructions for Danfoss scroll compressors, specifically models DSH, SM, SY, SZ, SH, and WSH, designed for air-conditioning systems. It covers safety information, proper usage, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures.

Function Description:

Danfoss scroll compressors are designed to circulate refrigerant within air-conditioning systems. They utilize a scroll mechanism to compress the refrigerant, facilitating heat transfer and cooling. The compressors are equipped with various protective features to ensure safe and reliable operation, including internal motor protectors, external overload protectors, and in some models, electronic modules for advanced protection.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Numbers: The instructions cover a wide range of models, including DSH, SM, SY, SZ, SH, and WSH series. Specific model numbers are detailed in the electrical connection diagrams and operating maps, such as DSH381A4ABA, DSH090-184, DSH240-600, WSH series, SM/SZ 084-185, SY/SZ 240-380, and SH 180-380.
  • Refrigerants: The compressors are designed for specific refrigerants. For example, DSH090-184 and DSH240-600 models use R410A. Other models are specified for R452B/R454B, R404A/R507A, R22/R417A, R407C, R134a, and R513A.
  • Voltage and Current: The nameplate provides details on supply voltage (e.g., 380-400V 3-50Hz, 460V 3-60Hz), starting current (LR320A), and maximum operating current (72A).
  • Pressure Specifications: The nameplate indicates high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) side service pressures (PS) and maximum/minimum temperatures (TS Max/Min). For instance, PS for LP side is 30.2 bar and HP side is 48.7 bar. TS Max is 51.0°C (150°C) and TS Min is -35.0°C (-35°C).
  • Lubricant: The factory-charged lubricant is typically POE 160PZ. For SM compressors used with R417A, the mineral oil 160P must be replaced by polyolester oil 160SZ.
  • Operating Limits: The operating maps (e.g., R410A - DSH090-184, R410A - DSH240-600, R410A - WSH, R410A - SH) illustrate the permissible operating envelopes based on evaporating temperature (To) and condensing temperature (Tc), often with specified superheat (S.H.) values (e.g., 5K, 10K, 11.1K, 15K, 30K).
  • Torque Specifications: Recommended tightening torques for rotalock connections are provided: 1 1/4" rotalock (90 Nm), 1 3/4" rotalock (145 Nm), and 2 1/4" rotalock (145 Nm).

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Installation and servicing must be performed by qualified personnel following these instructions and sound refrigeration engineering practices. Compressors are delivered under nitrogen gas pressure (0.3 to 0.7 bar) and should not be connected as is. They must be handled with caution in a vertical position, with a maximum offset of 15°.
  • Motor Protection:
    • Internal Safety Motor Protector: Most DSH/SH/WSH 090-184 and SM/SZ 084-161 models are protected by an internal safety motor protector against overheating and overloading. An external manual reset overload protector is recommended.
    • Bimetallic Thermostat: SM/SZ 115-185 versions include a bimetallic single-pole single-throw thermostat in the motor windings. This automatic reset device requires wiring into a lockout safety circuit with a manual reset. An external manual reset overload protector is also necessary.
    • Electronic Module: SH 180-380, DSH 240-381, SY/SZ 240-380, and SM/SZ 185 versions with an electronic module are protected against phase loss/reversal, overheating, and high current draw.
    • Dual Electronic Modules: SH/DSH485 and DSH600 models are protected by two external modules for enhanced protection against phase loss/reversal, overheating, and high current draw.
  • System Operation:
    • Pre-commissioning: Before commissioning, verify safety devices, ensure system leak tightness, check electrical connections, and confirm proper refrigerant charge.
    • Start-up: Do not operate the compressor without the electrical box cover fitted. Never start the compressor when no refrigerant is in the system. All service valves must be open.
    • Balling the HP/LP Pressure: Equalize the HP/LP pressure before starting. If the compressor does not start, check wiring, voltage, and motor winding resistance.
    • Reverse Rotation: External phase protection modules (MPM) prevent reverse rotation. If reverse rotation occurs, the compressor will shut off automatically.
    • Crankcase Heater: A crankcase heater is required, especially for systems with more than 10 kg of refrigerant charge or for systems with long off-cycle periods (6 hours for sump heaters).
  • Safety: Always use appropriate safety equipment. Do not exceed maximum operating pressures. Never use oxygen or air under pressure for leak detection. Do not use flammable refrigerants or unapproved lubricants.

Maintenance Features:

  • Leak Detection: Perform a leak detection test on the complete system. A vacuum pump to both the LP & HP sides is recommended. The system must hold a vacuum of 500 microns Hg (0.67 mbar absolute) for at least 30 minutes.
  • Electrical Connections: Ensure all electrical connections are tight and clean. Refer to section 4 for detailed electrical schematics.
  • Assembly: Mount the compressor on a horizontal flat surface with a maximum slope of 3°. Use dedicated handles and packaging. Braze connections with nitrogen flow to prevent oxidation.
  • Filling the System: Fill the liquid refrigerant into the condenser or liquid receiver. The charge must be as low as possible to prevent slugging. Never exceed the maximum charge.
  • Running Compressor Checks: Check current draw, voltage, suction superheat, and oil level. Observe for abnormal vibrations. Do not overcharge the system or release refrigerant to the atmosphere.
  • Periodic Service Inspections: Regularly verify safety devices, system leak tightness, compressor current draw, and overall system operation. Check electrical connections and ensure the compressor is clean and free from rust or oxidation.
  • Warranty: The warranty may be voided if the nameplate is absent, external modifications are made, the compressor is opened or unsealed, or unapproved refrigerants/lubricants are used. It also does not cover damage from natural disasters or use in mobile/explosive environments.
  • Disposal: Compressors and compressor oil should be recycled by a suitable company.
