Overview

This manual describes the Delfield Compact Refrigerators & Freezers, specifically the 4400 and 4500 Series. These units are designed for commercial use, offering various configurations as undercounter, flat top, work top, salad top, and mega top refrigerated bases, as well as freezer bases. They are intended for indoor use only.

Function Description:

The Delfield Compact Refrigerators & Freezers are self-contained refrigeration units designed to maintain consistent product temperatures for food storage. Refrigerators operate within a range of 36°F to 40°F (2°C to 4°C), while freezers are factory set to maintain approximately -3°F (-19°C). Salad top and mega top models are designed to maintain pan temperatures between 33°F and 41°F (1°C to 4°C) for up to four hours, meeting NSF-7 requirements. The units feature automatic defrost cycles for refrigerators and freezers, ensuring efficient operation and preventing excessive frost buildup. Freezer models also offer a manual defrost option.

Important Technical Specifications:

The units come in various lengths, from 27" (69cm) to 72" (183cm), and offer different internal volumes ranging from 8.20 ft³ to 24.80 ft³. Shelf area varies from 3.17 ft² to 8.22 ft². Horsepower (H.P.) ratings are typically 1/5 H.P. for smaller refrigerator models and 1/2 H.P. for larger refrigerator models (60", 64", and 72" wide). Freezer models generally use 1/5 H.P. for 32" units and 1/3 H.P. for 60" units. Refrigerant charge (Refg. Charge) ranges from 7.0 oz to 14.0 oz, depending on the model. All models operate on a standard 5-15P NEMA plug, with amperage ratings typically between 3.9 Amps and 12.0 Amps. Ship weights vary significantly based on size and configuration, ranging from 223 lbs (101 kg) for a 27" one-door undercounter refrigerator to 545 lbs (247 kg) for a 72" six-drawer mega top freezer. ST prefix models feature a 4" stainless steel backsplash. Some freezer models (D4532N* and UCD4532N*) are unavailable in the United States.

Usage Features:

  • Temperature Control: Refrigerators (except 4427 models) have a thermostat located in the evaporator housing, factory set to "4" for about 38°F (3°C). Salad top and 4427 flat top models have a thermostat at the rear of the cabinet, factory set to 4.5 for 34°F to 36°F (1°C to 2°C). Freezer controls are located at the rear of the cabinet, factory set at mid-range for approximately -3°F (-19°C). Adjustments can be made for higher or lower temperatures.
  • Power Switch: Salad and Mega top 4460, 4464, and 4472 models include a power disconnect switch at the rear, below the thermostat control knob.
  • Air Circulation: The "front-breathing" design of 4400 Series door and drawer models allows for flush installation against a wall or built into a counter, provided the front louver remains unobstructed for proper airflow.
  • Pan Height Adjustment: For salad top units, pan cooling can be improved by utilizing a lower pan position, especially in high ambient temperatures or when pan covers are open. This involves removing and reinstalling support brackets. Specific brackets may be required for certain models to achieve the lower pan position.
  • Shelving: Shelves have alignment pins and a backstop for secure installation.
  • Cutting Board Bracket Mounting: Instructions are provided for securely mounting cutting board brackets.
  • Drawer Assembly: Drawers and tracks are removable without tools and are dishwasher safe, facilitating easy cleaning.
  • Casters: All models are supplied with casters for mobility and ease of cleaning underneath. The front wheels must be locked after installation for stability.
  • Electrical Connection: Units come with a 6' (1.8 m) grounded supply cord and a three-pronged plug (5-15P NEMA). Proper grounding and correct voltage/amperage are crucial for operation.
  • Energy Star Compliance: 4427 Solid Top models are Energy Star Version II compliant, featuring evaporator fan pulsing independent of the compressor during normal operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Stainless Steel Care: To prevent discoloration and rust, stainless steel exteriors should be cleaned with soft cloths or plastic scouring pads and alkaline-based, non-chloride cleaners. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel pads, wire brushes, scrapers, and acid-based cleaning solutions. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
  • Condenser Coil Cleaning: Regular cleaning (every 90 days, or 30 days if heavily soiled) of the condenser coil is recommended to maintain refrigeration performance and prevent compressor failure. Light dust can be removed with a brush or vacuum; heavier buildup may require compressed air or de-greasing agents. High-pressure water washes are prohibited to avoid damaging electrical components.
  • Gasket Maintenance: Gaskets should be cleaned regularly with warm soapy water to prevent mold/mildew buildup and maintain elasticity. Avoid strong cleaning products, sharp tools, or knives. Gaskets are "Dart" style and can be easily replaced without tools.
  • Drain Maintenance: The internal drain system removes condensation. Regular checks are needed to ensure the drain tube is connected to the condensate evaporator drain pan and free of obstructions. Proper leveling of the cabinet is essential for effective drainage.
  • Drawer Maintenance: Drawer assemblies, including tracks, are designed for easy removal and cleaning with detergents and a soft bristle brush.
  • Doors/Hinges: Periodically check and tighten screws that mount hinge brackets to the cabinet frame to prevent doors from sagging or becoming loose, which can cause damage.
  • Fluorescent Light Bulb Replacement: Delfield recommends recycling fluorescent light bulbs.
