Eciency that drives your data center
The high-density Dell Compellent SC280 enclosure
is up to 2.8 times denser than traditional 2U 3.5”
disk-drive enclosure solutions, oering 67.2TB
of storage per rack unit. Easily increase storage
capacity for your Dell Compellent Storage Center
SAN and Compellent FS8600 NAS environments
with the scalable SC280 enclosure, and optimize
your IT budget. The SC280 is equipped with spare
drives to help ensure business continuity as part of
a resilient, highly available solution that’s backed by
industry-leading support. Compellent’s automated
tiering technology places less frequently accessed
data on the cost- and space-ecient SC280
enclosure to help you lower your infrastructure
costs without compromising the performance of
your frequently accessed data storage.
Designed for extreme density
The SC280 provides extreme density within a small
footprint enclosure, and has the best rack unit
density of any major storage solution. The dense
form factor of the SC280 helps reduce operating
expenses by storing up to 336TB in a 5U footprint
to help maximize oor space utilization in your data
center. The SC280 has two power supplies, ve
hot-swappable fans for power and cooling, and
redundant hot-swappable 6Gb SAS I/O modules for
availability. With a two-drawer drive bay design, with
each drawer holding up to 42 hot-swappable drives,
the enclosure oers two congurations for its 4TB
7.2K SAS HDDs — either partially populated with 42
drives or fully populated with 84 drives.
Scale on demand
Deploying and managing your data center is
challenging — the sheer amount of data that has
to be stored, backed up and archived is growing
exponentially. As an all-in-one, fast-write bulk
storage solution, the SC280 provides an ideal
solution for your large-scale enterprise and
co-location deployments, as well as le workows
including radiology, life sciences and media archival.
You can have two SC280 enclosures per loop,
ve enclosures per Storage Center system with

Overview

The Dell Compellent SC280 Dense Enclosure is a high-capacity, cost-optimized storage solution designed to maximize data center floor space and reduce operating expenses. It is presented as the densest storage enclosure from any major storage vendor in its class, offering significant storage capacity within a compact footprint.

Function Description

The SC280 serves as a scalable storage enclosure for Dell Compellent Storage Center SAN and Compellent FS8600 NAS environments. Its primary function is to provide high-capacity, low-cost storage for unified storage requirements. The enclosure is designed to store large amounts of data, helping organizations manage the exponential growth of data that needs to be stored, backed up, and archived. It is an all-in-one, fast-write bulk storage solution, making it ideal for large-scale enterprise and co-location deployments, as well as for file workflows in various sectors such as radiology, life sciences, and media archival. The SC280 integrates with Dell Compellent's automated tiering technology, which intelligently places less frequently accessed data on the cost- and space-efficient SC280 enclosure. This optimization helps lower infrastructure costs without compromising the performance of frequently accessed data storage. Multiple SC280 enclosures can be combined with two Storage Center systems to create a 2PB SAN and NAS solution within a single 48U rack, demonstrating its scalability for extensive storage needs.

Important Technical Specifications

The SC280 enclosure is designed for extreme density, offering up to 67.2TB of storage per rack unit, making it up to 2.8 times denser than traditional 2U 3.5" disk-drive enclosure solutions.

  • Controller Hardware: Dell Compellent SC8000
  • Software: Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.4 or later
  • Scalability: Can hold either 84 or 42 SAS HDD 3.5" 4TB drives per enclosure. Two SC280 enclosures can be supported per loop, and five enclosures per Storage Center system, supporting up to 400 active drives and 1.6PB of raw capacity.
  • Capacity: Up to 336TB per 5U enclosure.
  • Drives: SAS HDD 3.5" 4TB drives. The enclosure supports two configurations for its 4TB 7.2K SAS HDDs: either partially populated with 42 drives or fully populated with 84 drives.
  • Dimensions:
    • Height: 22.230 cm (8.8 in)
    • Width: 48.260 cm (19 in)
    • Depth: 91.44 cm (36 in)
  • Weight: 130.7 kg (287.5 lb) maximum configuration.
  • Power/Wattage: Two 2184W hot-swappable power supplies, with 1800W maximum power.
  • Heat Dissipation: 6,143 BTU/hr maximum.
  • Voltage: 208-240 VAC.
  • Frequency: 50/60Hz.
  • Amperage: 7.4 A at 241V maximum current.
  • Operating Temperature: 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F).
  • Compatibility: Compatible with Dell Compellent SC200, SC220, and Flash-optimized solutions. SC200 and SC220 enclosures can be connected to the same 6Gb SAS I/O card in the controller as an SC280, but must be on a different chain/loop.

Usage Features

The SC280's dense form factor is a key usage feature, allowing organizations to store up to 336TB in a 5U footprint. This significantly helps maximize floor space utilization in data centers and reduces operating expenses associated with physical space and power consumption. The two-drawer drive bay design, with each drawer accommodating up to 42 hot-swappable drives, facilitates easy expansion and maintenance. Its ability to tier data from high-performance, flash-optimized storage to the high-capacity, cost-optimized SC280 enclosure within a single array provides flexibility and cost-effectiveness without sacrificing performance for frequently accessed data. The SC280's scalability allows for addressing data center growth challenges by providing high-capacity, low-cost storage for both SAN and NAS unified storage requirements.

Maintenance Features

The SC280 is designed with features that contribute to its reliability and ease of maintenance. It includes spare drives to help ensure business continuity, which is part of a resilient, highly available solution backed by industry-leading support. For power and cooling, the enclosure is equipped with two hot-swappable power supplies and five hot-swappable fans. Redundant hot-swappable 6Gb SAS I/O modules are also included for enhanced availability, minimizing downtime during component failures or upgrades. The hot-swappable nature of these components allows for replacement without interrupting the operation of the system, which is crucial for maintaining continuous service in a data center environment.
