Overview

This document serves as a user's guide for the Dell SE2722H/SE2722HX Monitor, focusing on the Dell Display Manager (DDM) application. DDM is a Windows application designed to manage one or more Dell monitors, offering a suite of features for optimizing display settings and workflow.

Function Description

Dell Display Manager provides comprehensive control over your monitor's display settings and organization. Its primary function is to enable manual adjustment of the displayed image, assign automatic settings based on applications, manage energy consumption, and facilitate image rotation on supported Dell models. Once installed, DDM runs automatically when your system starts, placing its icon in the notification tray for easy access. Hovering over this icon provides quick information about connected monitors.

A crucial aspect of DDM's functionality is its reliance on the DDC/CI (Display Data Channel/Command Interface) channel for communication with your monitor. Users must ensure that DDC/CI is enabled in the monitor's On-Screen Display (OSD) menu for DDM to function correctly.

Usage Features

DDM offers a variety of features to enhance user experience and productivity:

  • Quick Settings Dialog: Clicking the DDM notification tray icon opens the Quick Settings dialog box. If multiple supported Dell monitors are connected, a specific target monitor can be selected from a menu. This dialog allows for convenient adjustment of brightness and contrast levels, selection between "Manual Mode" and "Auto Mode," and changing the screen resolution. The Quick Settings dialog also provides access to DDM's advanced user interface for more detailed adjustments.

  • Basic Display Functions:

    • Manual Mode: Allows users to manually select a preset display mode.
    • Auto Mode: Automatically applies a preset mode based on the active application. An on-screen message indicates when the preset mode changes.
    • Brightness and Contrast: Directly adjustable from the "Basic" tab.
    • Display Matrix Control: When multiple Dell monitors are connected, enabling "display matrix control" applies brightness, contrast, and color preset controls to all monitors simultaneously.
  • Assigning Preset Modes to Applications (Auto Mode): The "Auto Mode" tab enables users to associate specific preset modes with particular applications. When enabled, DDM automatically switches to the corresponding preset mode whenever the associated application is activated. This allows for customized display settings for different tasks (e.g., a "Game" mode for gaming applications, "Warm" for reading). The preset mode can be the same across multiple monitors or vary for each. DDM comes pre-configured for many popular applications, and new applications can be added by dragging and dropping them onto the list. It's important to note that DDM does not support preset mode assignments for batch files, scripts, loaders, or non-executable files like zip archives.

  • Organizing Windows with Easy Arrange: The "Easy Arrange" tab allows users to easily arrange open windows into predefined layouts by dragging them into designated zones. Users can cycle through more layouts using the ">" button or Page Up/Down keys. Custom layouts can be created by arranging windows on the desktop and then clicking "Save." The size and position of the windows are saved as a custom layout, and a corresponding icon is created. This feature saves only the size and position of windows, not the applications themselves.

  • Enhanced Easy Arrange Features:

    • Custom Layouts: Save and name up to 5 customized Easy Arrange patterns, and configure x*y patterns.
    • 5 MRU (Most-Recently-Used) Layouts: Cycle among the last 5 MRU layouts by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Home.
    • On-the-fly Partition Resizing: Hold down Ctrl while resizing the current Easy Arrange layout to adjust the size and number of cells. Newly formed patterns are saved. Holding Ctrl while clicking a modified layout icon restores it to the default layout.
    • Portrait Mode Layouts: Easy Arrange icons are presented appropriately when the monitor is rotated to portrait mode.
    • Important Note: An application may require a minimum effective resolution, and thus might not fit into an Easy Arrange zone if the zone is smaller than the required window size.
  • Managing Multiple Video Inputs (Input Manager): The "Input Manager" tab provides convenient ways to manage multiple video inputs connected to your Dell monitor. Users can easily switch between inputs when working with multiple computers. All available input ports are listed, and users can assign custom names to each input. Changes should be saved after editing. Shortcut keys can be defined for quickly switching to a favorite input or toggling between two frequently used inputs. DDM can communicate with the monitor even if it's displaying video from another computer, allowing input switching to be controlled from a PC with DDM installed.

  • Restoring Application Positions: DDM helps restore application windows to their previous positions when reconnecting your computer to the monitor(s). This feature is accessible by right-clicking the DDM icon in the notification tray.

    • Auto-restore window layout: If selected, DDM tracks and remembers application window positions, automatically restoring them when the PC reconnects to the monitor(s).
    • Save/Restore current window layout: Users can save a preferred window layout and restore it later if application windows have been moved.
    • DDM can recognize reconnected monitors with different models or resolutions and restore application positions accordingly. In a monitor matrix configuration, users can save the window layout before replacing a monitor and restore it after a new one is installed. This feature requires applications to be running to benefit from it; DDM does not launch applications.
  • Attach DDM to Active Window (Only Window 10): The DDM icon can be attached to the active window for quick access to features. This allows users to easily switch window positions, change color preset modes, and associate auto preset modes. A shortcut key (Ctrl+Shift+Ins) can also trigger the attached DDM menu. Users can send the app window to the previous/next Easy Arrange cell or to the previous/next monitor.

  • Applying Energy Conservation Features (PowerNap): On supported Dell models, the "Options" tab provides PowerNap energy conservation options. Users can choose to reduce the monitor's brightness to the minimum level or put the monitor to sleep when the screensaver activates.

  • Other Shortcut Keys: DDM allows users to define custom shortcut keys for quick access to various operations:

    • Program shortcut key: Quickly opens the Quick Settings dialog box.
    • Easy Arrange MRU shortcut key: Quickly applies the 5 recently used window layouts.
    • Application window shortcut key: Launches a quick menu for options under Auto Mode and Easy Arrange.

Maintenance Features (Troubleshooting)

The user guide includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues:

  • DDM Not Working: If DDM cannot communicate with your monitor, an error icon will appear in the notification tray. Clicking this icon reveals a more detailed error message.
  • Compatibility: DDM is designed to work exclusively with Dell-branded monitors. It does not support monitors from other manufacturers.
  • Troubleshooting Steps for DDM Failure:
    1. Cable Connection: Ensure the video cable is properly connected to both the monitor and the PC, with connectors firmly inserted.
    2. DDC/CI Enablement: Verify that DDC/CI is enabled in the monitor's OSD menu.
    3. Display Driver: Ensure you have the correct and latest display driver from your graphics vendor (Intel, AMD, NVidia, etc.), as outdated drivers are a common cause of DDM failure.
    4. Intermediary Devices: Remove any docking stations, cable extenders, or converters between the monitor and the graphics port, as some low-cost devices may not properly support DDC/CI. Update drivers for such devices if available.
    5. System Restart: Restart your system.
  • Unsupported Monitors: DDM may not work with:
    • Dell monitor models older than 2013 or D-series Dell monitors.
    • Gaming monitors using Nvidia-based G-sync technology.
    • Virtual and wireless displays (do not support DDC/CI).
    • Some early DP 1.2 monitors may require disabling MST/DP 1.2 in the monitor OSD.
  • Updates: If your PC is connected to the Internet, DDM will prompt you when a newer version is available. It is recommended to download and install the latest DDM application. Users can also manually check for updates by right-clicking the DDM icon while pressing and holding the 'Shift' key.
