Overview

The Delta-Q Technologies RQ Series Battery Charger is an industrial battery charger designed for various applications, offering robust construction and advanced charging capabilities. This user manual, identified by PN: 710-0261 Rev 1 and dated April 2021, provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, installation, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The RQ Series Battery Charger is engineered to charge deep cycle batteries, including lead-acid and lithium-ion types. It features up to 25 selectable charging algorithms stored in its internal memory, each specifically tailored to different battery manufacturers and models. The charger's primary function is to efficiently and safely recharge batteries, ensuring optimal battery life and performance across various application environments. For lithium-ion batteries, an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) is required to protect battery cells from inappropriate levels of voltage, current, temperature, and state of charge.

Important Technical Specifications:

The RQ Series comes in several models, each with specific voltage and battery capacity ranges:

  • RQ0350-012: Maximum Voltage 18V. For Lead Acid: 6 Cell 150* - 250 Ah. For Lithium-ion: 3-5 Cells 150* - 250 Ah.
  • RQ0350-024: Maximum Voltage 36V. For Lead Acid: 12 Cell 75* - 250 Ah. For Lithium-ion: 6-10 Cells 75* - 250 Ah.
  • RQ0350-036: Maximum Voltage 60V. For Lead Acid: 18 Cell 50* - 250 Ah. For Lithium-ion: 9-16 Cells 50* - 250 Ah.
  • RQ0350-048: Maximum Voltage 72V. For Lead Acid: 24 Cell 40* - 250 Ah. For Lithium-ion: 12-20 Cells 40* - 250 Ah. (*Smaller pack sizes can be accommodated, potentially requiring special testing or configuration for efficiency legislation compliance.)

The charger supports both 120 VAC and 240 VAC input, operating at 50/60Hz. It delivers a maximum output of 350W. For 120V AC input, a maximum of three chargers can be connected to a single 15A circuit. For 240V AC input, a maximum of four chargers can be connected to a single 10A circuit. The unit is designed to meet IP66 specifications when mated with a Delta-Q Technologies sealed AC cord, making it dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.

Usage Features:

The charger features a user-friendly interface with several indicators and a control button:

  • AC Power Indicator: Illuminates solid blue when AC power is available.
  • Battery Charging Indicator:
    • Slow Breathing Green: Indicates less than 80% charged.
    • Fast Breathing Green: Indicates more than 80% charged.
    • Solid Green: Indicates charge is complete.
  • Fault/Error Indicator: Signals faults and errors, with recommended actions available on the Delta-Q Technologies support website.
  • Charger Button:
    • Short Press (less than 4 seconds): Displays the currently active charging algorithm.
    • Used to select a new algorithm from those loaded on the charger. To select an algorithm, press and hold the button until GREEN and RED LEDs flash fast (Select Mode). Then, short press to cycle through algorithms. To confirm selection, press and hold for more than five seconds.

The charger is designed for safe operation, automatically reducing output power if its temperature rises above set thresholds or if the AC input voltage is too low. If power is interrupted and then returns, the charger restarts and continues operation without hazard.

Maintenance Features:

The RQ Series Battery Charger is designed for durability and minimal user maintenance.

  • No User Serviceable Parts: The charger should not be opened or disassembled. All repair work must be referred to the manufacturer or qualified personnel.
  • Connector Inspection: All connectors between the battery charger and the battery should be regularly inspected for corrosion and contamination, as these can cause overheating and fire hazards.
  • Cord Replacement: If the detachable AC input power cord set or DC output cord is damaged, they must be replaced with cord sets appropriate to the region and application.
  • Cleaning: Do not expose the charger to oil, dirt, mud, or direct heavy water spray when cleaning the vehicle or machine.
  • EMC Compliance: If a Delta-Q Technologies sealed cord with an over-molded ferrite bead is not used, a clamp-on ferrite bead (LAIRD 28A0807-0A2) can be added to the AC cord to ensure Class B compliance. This bead should be positioned approximately the same distance from the charger as the beads on the DC and signal cables.
  • Mounting: Robust mounting points are cast into the aluminum enclosure, with 4.5mm x 8mm diameter slots for M4 screws. It is recommended to use only three mounting points if the charger is mounted on a frame prone to flexing, to prevent undue stress. Drilling holes in the charger is not permitted.

The charger's part and serial numbers are located on the first fin on the left side of the charger, essential for technical support.
