Overview

This document describes a DEWALT die grinder, a professional power tool designed for various grinding applications.

Function Description

The DEWALT die grinder is intended for professional grinding, sanding, polishing, carving, or cut-off operations. It can be used with a complete range of commercial grinding accessories with a maximum diameter of 40 mm and an approved minimum speed of 25,000/min. The tool is designed to be held firmly with both hands during operation, with one hand on the tool body and the other on the neck of the die grinder.

Important Technical Specifications

The die grinder features a variable speed rocker switch, allowing for speed control based on how far the switch is depressed. It also includes a lock-off button to prevent accidental activation. A three-speed gearing system allows users to select speed ranges suitable for different applications and accessories. The speed selector switch (13) is used to choose between the lowest, middle, and highest RPM settings. Speed ranges cannot be changed while the tool is in use; the trigger must be released, and the tool allowed to come to a complete stop before switching speeds. The tool is equipped with an LED worklight (12) located around the collet, which activates when the rocker switch is depressed and stays illuminated for up to 20 seconds after release.

The tool operates with DEWALT battery packs (8). The battery packs are designed with an Electronic Protection System that protects against overloading, overheating, or deep discharge, automatically turning off the tool if these conditions occur. The battery packs are rechargeable using DEWALT chargers, which feature indicators for charging status, including "Charging," "Fully Charged," and "Hot/Cold Pack Delay." The chargers are designed to be wall-mountable or to sit upright on a table.

Usage Features

To operate the tool, the lock-off button (2) must be pushed, and then the variable speed rocker switch (1) depressed. Releasing the rocker switch turns the tool off. It is crucial to allow the tool to reach full speed before touching the work surface and to lift it from the surface before turning it off. When mounting an accessory, the spindle (3) is held with the smaller spanner (5), the collet nut (4) is loosened, the accessory shank inserted into the collet (7), and then the collet is securely tightened with the larger spanner (6). Accessories must have a rated speed at least equal to the maximum speed marked on the tool and must be within the tool's capacity rating. The exposed mandrel length of the accessory should not exceed 1.0" (25 mm). The collet should never be tightened without an accessory inserted, as this can cause damage.

When working, it is recommended to clamp the workpiece securely. Users should wear a face mask if the operation generates dust and avoid jamming the wheel into the work or applying unnecessary pressure. Grinding should generally be done on the edge of the wheel unless a specific wheel designed for face grinding is used.

Safety Warnings and Precautions

The manual emphasizes reading all safety warnings and instructions to prevent electric shock, fire, and serious injury. Key safety points include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1), hearing protection (ANSI S12.6/S3.19), and a dust mask or respirator (NIOSH/OSHA/MSHA approved) when appropriate.
  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of children and bystanders. Do not operate in explosive atmospheres.
  • Electrical Safety: Use matching plugs and outlets, avoid body contact with grounded surfaces, and do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
  • Battery Use and Care: Recharge only with specified DEWALT chargers. Do not use damaged battery packs or store them in extreme temperatures. Avoid shorting battery terminals.
  • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, avoid snagging the accessory, and do not use toothed saw blades. Ensure the work is securely clamped when using rotary files, cut-off wheels, or cutters.
  • Abrasive Cutting-Off: Use only recommended wheel types and applications. Do not "jam" the cut-off wheel or apply excessive pressure.
  • Dust Hazards: Be aware that dust from power sanding, sawing, grinding, and drilling can contain chemicals known to cause cancer or other harm. Work in well-ventilated areas and use approved dust masks. Avoid prolonged contact with dust.
  • Paint Sanding Precautions: When sanding paint, especially lead-based paint, minimize dust generation, seal work areas, and ensure no children or pregnant women are present until cleanup is complete. Workers should wear appropriate dust masks and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in the work area.

Maintenance Features

For maintenance, the unit should be turned off, and the battery pack removed before making any adjustments or changing accessories. Air vents should be blown clean with dry air at least once a week to minimize the risk of eye injury, always wearing ANSI Z87.1 approved eye protection. Solvents or harsh chemicals should not be used to clean non-metallic parts of the tool, as they can weaken plastic materials. A cloth dampened with water and mild soap is recommended. No liquid should enter the tool or immerse any part of it.

The charger and battery pack are not serviceable by the user. Repairs, maintenance, and adjustments should be performed by a DEWALT factory service center using identical replacement parts to ensure product safety and reliability.

Storage Recommendations

For long storage, it is recommended to store a fully charged battery pack in a cool, dry place, out of the charger, and away from direct sunlight, excess heat, or cold. Battery packs should not be stored completely depleted of charge.

Warranty and Support

DEWALT offers a Three Year Limited Warranty covering defects due to faulty materials or workmanship. This warranty does not cover part failure due to normal wear or tool abuse. Additionally, there is a 1 Year Free Service for tool maintenance and worn part replacement, and 2 or 3 Years Free Service for DEWALT battery packs, depending on the model. A 90 Day Money Back Guarantee is also provided for customer satisfaction. For questions or comments, users can call 1-800-4-DEWALT (1-800-433-9258).
